Before I played Stupid Stories, I had a small pp, no friends, no gf, depression, and no life. These things havent changed, but the game is pretty good
Nostalgia kicks in hard on this one. Great, little adventure game with love fore the details. Riddles are challenging but fair with a well thought trough in-game help system. Get it on sale.
"Stupid Stories" is a simple 16 bit style 2D retro pixel "adventure" game with some rather mediocre writing and plot, but at least you get a reasonable amount of content for the price. Unfortunately the really poor visuals let this one down. Mildly borrowing from the theme of The Princess Bride, an old man tells you a story and that story is the actual game. The game spans a bunch of different comedy themes, there's a few puzzles and things, too. This features really godawful, lazy pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks bad because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers. Games like Terraria and Stardew Valley succeeded despite the bad graphics, not because of them. It's free... now, but it wasn't before. The developer was charging $5 USD for this. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It's a nice gesture for the game to be given away for free, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 2 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? This is a "maybe" experience... if you have a lot of free time on your hands and nothing else to do, why not? But for the purposes of a review, this isn't something I can say everyone must try. It's not quite there. Valve doesn't give us a "maybe" option in reviews, but if they did, that's what I'd choose for this.
