This is a solid "game" but I'd say it's more of a visual novel. The story is excellent and moving. The music is also fantastic and pairs perfectly with the scenes and helps evoke the emotions the creator is going for. The mini-games are okay. Storm Boy is best for kids in elementary school but possibly up to middle school. It has a good moral to the story that will pull the emotional strings of adults. It reminded me of my first pet and the heartache of loss. The main downside to this story is that it's very short.

This review is specially made for those who like to get all the achievements in games (minor spoilers ahead). Storm Boy is a very short interactive book with minigames — only one of which requires a bit of skill to complete. The rest are simple experiences with no real objectives. Combined with the touching story and the illustration-like art style, it’s clear this game is aimed at very young children, who will likely enjoy it the most, much like the original book it's based on. Storm Boy spiritually feels like those interactive storybooks that were popular in the 90’s that have since mostly disappeared. You control Storm Boy who walks in a straight line and occasionally you will encounter mini game segments that are always more activity than game. Maybe it’s because I grew up in the opposite hemisphere, but I never felt moved enough by the story to believe that Storm Boy was worth adapting into a video game. But again that could just be a product of cultural differences. - Additional Steam Deck note: this is another game you’ll need to run on Proton 7.0-6. Default controls are wonky, but it’s playable .

It's a very short story of a boy and his bird. I mean very short, like you'd expect a children's book to be. But the message is a little too sad for a child to enjoy this game. But in the same respect the little mini games are too simple for an adult to feel challenged. So who is this game for? I guess if you enjoyed the book or had fond memories of it or just really like pelicans, wait for it to be on sale for no more than $2 which is how i got it. But the $5 price tag is a bit much considering what the game itself and the simple story entailed.
