This Japanese shoot 'em up tries to be different, but I didn't like it. First, the enemies are too big and your ship is too big with an uncertain hit zone making you an easier target. Second, it's recommended in the tutorial to shoot the enemies before they manage to even shoot and even better if it's in close-up. That means staying close to the top half of the screen and not seeing the enemies much. Third, bullets just go too fast making them very difficult to avoid. Fourth, to improve your ship incrementally requires a lot of dying and grinding. Last, after the boring tutorial, the only difficulty level is "very hard". It's a bit of a joke and a warning, but it was indeed too hard for me.
The music is repetitive and the bass sounds really awful. It was grating on me already early on during the games tutorial. The game wants you to manouver your ship near the top of the screen frequently and murder things almost before they've even appeared. The game is quite zoomed in too. This makes the game a pretty messy affair that I didn't find appealing. As well as these problems, the game encourages you to mash the fire button rather than hold it down. ..I'm a pretty fast button masher, but even if i try to deliberately pace myself, it's still an unpleasant ask. So you're sitting near the top of the screen, mashing the fire button and listening to godawful music. Does this sound fun to you? I've played a lot of great modern shmups, from Jamestown to Zero Ranger to Super Hydorah to Super Galaxy Squadron Ex Turbo. Do yourself a favour and try one of those instead.

Any fan of shoot'em ups simply must have this game. Unique game design (large size ship - when is that ever a good thing right? but it works here) Scale-able difficulty which you adjust on the fly while in mission by picking up either red or green icons (it works very well) Risk/reward which is affected by how hard you make the game, The higher the difficulty the higher level items that drop to upgrade the ship with. Also the higher the point multiplier. Performance is great. Sound is good Plays smooth with good input responsiveness. A true hidden gem - a top recommendation, not to be missed!
I'm having a wonderful time with this space shooter. The raising/lowering difficulty gems really add a nice twist to the genre.
Pretty exciting game. At first it seems like the way you're supposed to play it is unreasonable. Too dangerous to camp right where an enemy will appear. But you can grind and get stronger in this game, and eventually you can 1CC with no issue. I've still only got the bad ending so far though [update: got good ending now]. The art is nice, and music is great as usual for Akiragoya. One thing I don't like is that primary and secondary fire are controlled by a single button based on whether you're holding or repeatedly pressing it. Usually I'm doing the latter and my thumb gets tired.
Steel Vampire is my kind of Shmup. It's less about dodging a bullet hell, and more about not allowing the enemy to create one. In Steel Vampire your ship doesn't take damage when directly contacting the enemy. Additionally, the game has you do more damage the closer you are to the target. Both rewarding super aggressive play when you consider a destroyed enemy doesn't shoot. So Steel Vampire is less about dodging bullet hell patterns (though it's still there), and becomes more about quickly dispatching the enemy in terms of threat priority and correct positioning. I found that when my target prioritization was off, I was forced to pull back further to the bottom of the screen where I had to go back to more typical shmup dodging. However, if I maintained pressure and aggression correctly, there weren't enemy bullets to dodge. And I adore that. Steel Vampire offers persistent weapon upgrade load outs. With primary weapon options picked up randomly with their power determined by your Rank. Rank is adjusted on the fly by picking up Red power ups to increase the game's difficulty, and green power ups to lower the game's difficulty. While secondary options are purchased with points earned during the game, as well as, converting spare primary weapons options. I could see a minor complaint that primary fire is done by tapping the fire button repeatedly. While secondary fire mode is done by holding the fire button down. I like this use of the fire button. To get primary fire, you don't have to turbo tap; just give it a steady tapping while the action is intense. And if you need to take things slower, just hold down the button and let the secondary fire do the work and just the slower movement speed to better dodge bullets.
