There are two kinds of people: the rulers and the ruled. The Heights are a gorgeous utopia. The Depths, a filthy industrial wasteland. Our heroine, raised in the Heights, has nothing but contempt for those below.
Steam Prison is an otome visual novel game developed by HuneX. The MangaGamer translator team did an excellent job with the English translation, which is smooth and high-quality, making the long reading experience pleasant. The scenario writer of this game is Yumas, who also created the popular otome game OZMAFIA!!—which is also available on Steam, localized by the MangaGamer publisher team.
Background Story
The world is divided into two distinct realms: the Heights and the Depths. The Heights is a towering residence in the sky, built to avoid a great flood. Only a select few were chosen to live in the Heights and escape the flood, while the flood destroyed everything in the Depths—or so it was believed. In reality, some people survived in the Depths and developed steampunk technology there. From the Heights’ perspective, the Depths is a horrible prison where criminals are exiled. In the story, you play as Cyrus Tistella, a pink-haired female protagonist of mid-noble status (you can change her name if you prefer). A resident of the Heights, Cyrus lives a peaceful daily life working as a rank 1 police officer alongside her loyal male coworker, Fin Euclase. The only thing that annoys her is the government’s decision to arrange her marriage; she is far more interested in her job than starting a family. Both Cyrus and Fin are thrilled when they pass the rank 2 examination, which requires an observation assignment in the Depths to qualify for rank 2. The next day, they are sent to the Depths, where Cyrus gets into a conflict with the HOUNDS commander after dueling him to save a child’s life. Soon after she returns to the Heights, something strange starts to happen: her parents bring her bad news that her marriage plan has been suddenly canceled by the government. While she is asleep, she hears a noise around the house, goes to check, and gets knocked out. Everything falls apart for her the following day: she wakes up holding a bloody knife, is falsely accused of murdering her own parents, and—unable to defend herself—is exiled to the Depths as a criminal. Now she has a mystery to solve. Are you curious if she will find out who framed her for her parents’ deaths? Let’s follow her story in Steam Prison!
The Characters
This game features multiple choices that lead to different routes and various endings, with a total of 6 male love interests and multiple beautifully drawn CGs. The male characters are designed to be cool, handsome, each with distinct personalities. Even side characters have voice acting (except the female protagonist), and the voice actors are highly professional—their performances bring the characters’ personalities vividly to life! The female protagonist, Cyrus, has a strong sense of justice and is strong-willed, though she is naive, dense, and completely clueless about love. Fin Euclase is Cyrus’s loyal coworker, who secretly loves her deeply and gets jealous of the other love interests. Eltcreed Valentin is the head of Valentin Bank and one of the rulers of the Depths, leading the faction Liberalitas. He is a humorous character who enjoys flirting with women, and he holds a deep admiration for the Heights. Additionally, he is highly captivated by the protagonist (MC) due to her elegant swordsmanship. Ulrik Ferrie is Eltcreed’s most trusted subordinate—a jack-of-all-trades with a tsundere personality and a short temper. Adage is a cold doctor in the Depths, but he cares deeply for his patients. Ines Heinrich Heine is the second-in-command of the HOUNDS. Unlike Sachsen, he is kind-hearted toward Cyrus. Yune Sekiei is revered as a great saint, blessed with immortality by God, and worshipped by people in both the Depths and the Heights.
Play Order
To better understand the story, there is a recommended play order: (you can refer to the guide section for the choice) Bodyguard Route: Eltcreed → Ulrik Prisoner Route: Adage → Ines Heinrich Heine Servant Route: Yune Warder Route: Fin → Grand Ending Route Unfortunately, you need to purchase a DLC to access Fin’s route.
Summary
Steam Prison is a fantastic, lengthy Japanese otome game with high-quality voice acting, an intriguing world-building, a diverse cast of love interests, and an English translation available on Steam. The only downside is the need to buy the Fin DLC to play his story. 8.5/10
At first, Steam Prison sat untouched in my backlog for years—gifted by my sweet boyfriend, passionately recommended by my best friend, and shamelessly ignored by me because, frankly, it looked... different. But when a sequel dropped, friendship loyalty (and curiosity) finally kicked in—and oh boy, was I unprepared. Let's set one thing straight: this is NOT your typical fluffy otome. Steam Prison is gritty, gorgeous, and emotionally devastating—complete with stunning visuals, incredible music (I bought the Switch version just for extra OST goodies, it’s THAT good), and men whose routes vary from “healing my broken heart” to “why am I crying at 2am over pixels?” Sure, our heroine Cyrus is as romantically clueless as a sword-wielding toaster at times, and yes, some routes made me side-eye the writers (looking at you, Sachsen). But between Ulrik’s prickly wholesomeness, Ines’s surprising depth, Eltcreed making pasta sound borderline scandalous, Yune’s immortal heartbreak, Fin’s DLC angst, and Adage’s perfectly sarcastic charm (my personal kryptonite), Steam Prison delivered an emotional ride I wasn't expecting—and still haven't fully recovered from. Did I love it? Clearly. Did it emotionally damage me? Absolutely. Would I recommend it? With tissues and caution, 100%. 📖 Read my full (spoiler-free) breakdown of all routes, rankings, and fangirl analysis here: 🌸 https://otomescape.com/steam-prison-review
This game doesn’t just tell you about love it shows you how people grow, how they break, and how even small choices can change everything. A simple otome turned out to be a story full of emotion, reflection, and human nature. Cyrus, the main character, is someone many people misunderstand. If you look at her story closely, it makes sense why she changes. She starts as a noble girl who knows nothing beyond kindness and justice, living under the strict rule of the temple. Then, everything falls apart her promotion is canceled, her engagement breaks off, her parents are murdered, and she’s sent to the depths as a criminal. Anyone would crumble under that, but she still tries to live and move forward. That’s the message I love most, if you stay stuck in the past, you’ll only get the bad ending but if you move forward, you’ll find hope. Elt’s route, honestly? There wasn’t much chemistry. He’s sweet, sure, but being a womanizer makes me question his sincerity. I skimmed through most of his endings the only one that really caught my heart was the one where Fin “takes” me. Strangely, I preferred Elt’s normal ending maybe because Saint Yune appears there? His happy ending was nice too, mostly because he finally stood up for himself. Now, Ulrik… I had high hopes after seeing everyone call him “best boy,” but halfway through his route, I started to feel disappointed. Early on, I actually interacted more with Elt than Ulrik. It even felt like Ulrik saved me not because he cared deeply, but because Elt said I was special. Maybe there was some care there, but it was clear his bond with Elt mattered more. I wanted more sweet, romantic moments with Ulrik. Elt had far more bonding scenes, even with Cyrus! I still can’t believe we got so many beautiful CGs with Elt but barely anything for Ulrik. His route felt shorter, and even his normal ending was sad while Elt somehow gets a happy one every time. Unfair. Some people said Adage’s ending was “just about killing,” but I don’t see it that way. I actually liked it, even though I expected a more dramatic plot twist about why Cyrus was sent to the depths. When you think about it, though humans are such mysterious beings. Sometimes, there doesn’t need to be a huge twist, just understanding their emotions is enough. seriously, what was that, Adage?! He was waiting for Cyrus to come back, and then—bam! That sudden shift in emotion caught me completely off guard. Still, I loved their exchanges, especially the ending with Ines. It felt abrupt, yes, but I liked the little detail that Cyrus knows how to cook, and the parallel from “I’ll devote my life to you” to “Why don’t you devote your life to me?” That line hit me hard. But then again Adage took care of us It was the only time I didn’t feel anxious about danger or survival no hounds nearby, no stress about what to eat next. Ines... I felt so alone at the start of his route just waiting for him to come. Doing his route right after finishing Adage’s made me miss having someone by my side all the time. I don’t have much to say , but I liked all his endings especially the happy one, mostly because Fin was there. (We also got justice here) Fin’s route really struck me. Seeing the contrast between his versions the innocent boy versus the darker “Hound” side was painful yet fascinating. Many people prefer his yandere side, but for me, that Fin already had his ending. The route where he’s living in the Sanctuary District showed another side of him quiet, broken, but still human. It left me imagining what could have been, and I love that feeling of bittersweet possibility. And maybe now I understand why Sachen took a liking to Fin. They’re similar in a way both timid souls who were twisted by circumstances, turning toward darkness. Then there’s Yune (I PLAYED HIM LAST). His route wrecked me emotionally in the best way. I didn’t expect to cry so much. There’s something about his voice and how he carries himself that feels sacred, fitting for a saint. His story had the justice Cyrus deserved(In the bad ending though....). The fact that he reformed the entire system for her, changing the country itself, made me love him even more. He’s not just a love interest, he’s a symbol of hope and change. Yune is, without question, best man. The more I played, the more I realized this isn’t your usual otome game. It’s not just about romancen it’s about people, choices, and the mystery of being human. The way it shows multiple perspectives makes every character feel real. And the voice acting? Amazing. You can even hear how their tones change as the story progresses especially Adage and Fin. It’s such a subtle detail, but it adds so much depth. One thing I noticed right away is how the voice acting subtly changes as you progress through each route. When you first meet Adage, his voice sounds almost robotic calm, collected, a little distant. But the more time you spend with him, the more emotion starts to seep through. It’s such a small detail, yet it completely changes how you see him. The same goes for Fin, his tone changes the most noticeably. You can really hear the emotional shifts as you get closer to each character. I love the little visual details red in the Bodyguard route, green in the Warder route. In Yune it's violet. Those subtle touches really make me appreciate the effort put into this game. By the end, I found myself reflecting on the message that keeps repeating throughout the routes: don’t be trapped by the past. Move forward. Every character carries this theme differently, but they all lead you to the same truth growth comes from pain, and happiness is something you choose. I didn’t expect to find something so profound in an otome game. But here I am, moved beyond words. Yune and Fin best men, both.
TRIGGERWARNING: RAPE; ASSAULT/VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN - why is there NO WARNING?! I played this game a while ago on the Switch and got it here on sale, I thought it was the same - but damn, was I wrong. In no way can I remember the Depths and the "almost rape", "violence against women", etc. What the hell happened? There isn’t even a warning on such a label - hello? Are there 2 different versions? I had to stop playing. What I found the most disgusting is how they "downplay violence against women and rape" - that left me speechless and is the most upsetting part in this game - it ruins it! And no matter how you "don’t mention it again" - it is in your head and it will affect your gameplay. Spoiler: Our MC almost gets r - and there are no consequences, it never gets mentioned again - and the way they write it is disturbing. There is also another woman who is a prostitute - she almost gets r. (our MC saves her! and then it gets downplayed again!) Rape got mentioned 2 times in this game - again without consequences. I understand it’s the Depths, but damn - a WARNING there isn’t so difficult. Another upsetting part was that when MC almost got r - they wrote it like "she is naive, she doesn’t know what they will do with her" - but just a few seconds before, the other woman, who is a prostitute, TOLD HER HER JOB! and MC was understanding... they really wanna downplay rape... I have no idea who is behind this game, if the developer was a woman or a man or whatever - I will not buy or play a game from them ever again. It is beyond my understanding why you can’t put warnings out there, as it is a TRIGGER, and how someone even can imagine such a thing. (This is not my first Otome Game - but the others have warnings!) Overall, I pushed through - started the route with the guy with glasses - and then again came a part with "he has a lot of women, you can sleep around" - that was it for me. It made the entire game so lifeless. In his route were also a few grammar and spelling mistakes - where I still have no clue what the hell he wanted to say. I am curious about Fin’s Route - as you apparently only unlock it when you accomplished each other’s love interests’ happy ending, but with all I went through with this game - and my anger towards it - I’d rather play another game, or look up his route on YouTube. The only 3 positive things are: the concept of living wealthy and then poor, and having to adapt to that Reilith (prostitute) and her child - they are gems! and I really hope they have a happy ending that MC was understanding enough of Reilith’s situation No warning, no consequences, no respect for the topic - handling this so carelessly is inexcusable. Waste of time.
