After playing this game for a little while, I can say that this is definitely the kind of game that I could easily binge for a few days, but then would likely just put down and never return to. It's a lot of fun for what it is, and there are a lot of positives, but I can't say I really recommend it in it's current state, at it's current price. As for the positives, the island the game takes place on is really pretty, fairly varied for how small it is, and fun to traverse around using the various different methods of transportation available to you. The character customisation is also decent, and decorating your house can be pretty fun, but the method for crafting the decorations can often range from anywhere between easy to tedious. The game is fun, but I wouldn't say there is any one metric where it particularly stands out from many of the other JRPG village life sims that are available. You are going to spend most of your time in this game levelling up your proficiency in the professions that you chose to take on, and sadly not much else outside of that. In my case, this was predominantly crafting, as that is what was recommended to me. Crafting can honestly be a bit of a pain at times, as it relies on you making things from multiple different ingredients, using different work benches, and then putting those multiple different refined items you made out of the ingredients onto another work bench with the other refined items, to then make the finalised items, which you then combine at your crafting table. I'm not inherently against the idea, as it adds a layer of complexity to the system, but it's very repetitive, and the wait times for all of these items to be made can be a pain when they all add up because you're trying to craft something that is a bit more high maintenance. A lot of items also require going to and from the Moonlit forest for ore, which can be fun, as the area is very aesthetically pleasing, but there is not really much to do there outside of mining ores, occasionally breaking down barriers, and fighting the occasional enemy in an unrefined combat sequence, which is honestly fine, as the game clearly wasn't made to be a combat experience. And with the game still being early access, you might expect me to forgive these imperfections; and to an extent, I definitely can. The main problem lies with the characters, however. I don't know if it's more accurate to say that the characters are boring, or just woefully under-developed, but I think I'm going to go with the latter. Even if you are being trained by one of them in a certain profession, like how I was being trained in crafting by Zerine; you still don't get the chance to talk to them very often. Occasionally, certain NPCs will have requests for you to fulfill at the bulletin board, but most of that involves making an item, and then giving it to them, for which they thank you, and maybe give you something in return. That's it. You don't get any unique interactions. You can at least do more with the characters the more that you raise your affection levels with them, but even then, it's largely limited to things like taking photos with each other and whatnot. You can later unlock dates with certain characters once you reach affection level 3 with them, but it already feels quite late at that point, considering that the game could have massively benefitted from having social link/ support conversation style events that you could unlock for each character straight away, or even after doing just one side quest for them. Until you reach affection rank 3 with a character (and that can be a while), they are pretty much doing nothing, and have virtually nothing to say to you. Considering that the different new character interactions you unlock for each affection level have already been decided, I can't see them messing with this formula too much, if at all; and because there is so little to do with these characters, it also means that there is very little to do outside of honing your skills in your chosen profession. It's a shame, because the island is beautiful, but most of the time that you are traversing through it, it's just to go finish up a quest, buy something, or deliver something. I can see them adding activities to do in town in the future, but the character bonding system seems like something that is going to remain largely untouched; and if so, it would remain underwhelming. Ultimately, it is a fun game with a pretty world that can be fun to skate around, but there doesn't really feel like anything particularly worth exploring when you consider the lack of different activities outside of picking things up and delivering things; and how irrelevant each character is throughout the duration of their earlier bond levels, which can be for quite a while. I can honestly see myself recommending this game after a few fixes and updates, depending on what they added and modified, but as it stands, I wouldn't recommend it right now.
I’ve been playing this game for a while now, and I really enjoy it. Since it’s in Early Access, I’ve personally noticed some issues that I’d like to share in this review. Setting aside the game’s overall performance issues, I’ve noticed that most of the bugs occur in Build mode. - In build mode, when trying to decorate the house, it’s impossible to place objects, even if there’s space and nothing blocking the placement. - Sometimes I can’t zoom in or out anymore, it’s very strange. - This particular issue is very frustrating: the “Chinese Courtyard Corner Wall” doesn’t automatically snap into place with the “Chinese Courtyard Wall” the way the “Chinese Courtyard Wall” does with the “Chinese Moon Gate.” This is just my opinion, but for a life sim, I was pretty surprised not to see any bathrooms anywhere, and the few bathroom items—like the shower and bathtub—are just non-functional decorations. I understand that the game wants to focus on other areas like culture and exploration, but it’s still a shame. I’d like my character to be able to take a bath or a shower, we can wear makeup but not bath at home !? I really love all the Chinese items and decorations, so I’d love to see more content in future updates, maybe even a traditional Chinese bathtub, if possible.
CUTE!!!
I had been thinking about this game for months before release. And I mean actually counting the days. I don’t usually do that with games, but from the moment I saw Starsand Island, I thought this could be the farming/life sim for me. Why? Because just look at it. The art style is gorgeous. From the trailers, I imagined this huge, rich, vibrant experience where you have farming, daily life, relationships, a beautiful world and all those little details I personally care way too much about. ( but the actual game didn’t really have much of that big world I expected. ) Pretty characters. Beautiful fashion. Cute houses. Decorations. Colorful environments. Tiny visual details everywhere. I’m someone who genuinely notices those things, and I have to give it to Chinese game developers here because I keep seeing this incredible attention to beauty and detail in their games. They understand how much a beautiful character, a gorgeous outfit or a carefully designed environment can add to the whole experience. And that is completely my thing. So obviously, the moment Early Access came, I got it. And yes, I enjoyed it. I enjoyed many things about it. The cuteness, the colors, the atmosphere, the characters, skating around town.. There are ideas here that feel fresh and charming, and I really appreciate that. But I also have to be honest about why I eventually stopped playing. I’m really not a fan of the whole My Time at Portia-style crafting system where you slowly end up placing machine after machine after machine around your farm just to process different materials. One machine for this. Another machine for that. Then another thing to create another material so you can finally create the thing you originally wanted 🥲 I just don’t enjoy it. I don’t like having machinery scattered everywhere, and I especially don’t like when crafting becomes this long chain where one item requires another material, that material requires something else, and then that requires you to go to a specific area or dungeon to collect it. At first, fine. But eventually it becomes overwhelming for me. And I really don’t like feeling overwhelmed in gaming. That loop slowly exhausted me. I think this is honestly the main reason I stopped playing. It started feeling repetitive, and eventually I thought: you know what? I’ll step away and come back later when the game has developed further. At the time I played, I knew I could not go very far with the romance side yet. Maybe that has changed by now, because I haven’t played in a while, but that is definitely one of the biggest things I would love to return for. And I really hope they keep expanding beyond the crafting loop. Which I doubt it. And personally? I would absolutely love stronger RPG elements too. Give me more story. Let me fight monsters for an actual reason. Give me some larger threat, some mystery, maybe even a final boss. Let me feel like I’m not only someone growing crops and processing materials, but also someone important to this world. And no matter what criticism I have, I’m still going to say this: Starsand Island is the most beautiful-looking farming sim I have ever played. It’s colorful, dreamy, anime-like, almost storybook-like. The characters are beautiful. The world is beautiful. The fashion is beautiful. Even simply skating around town is a lovely idea and exactly the kind of little detail that makes a game feel special to me. So yes, I recommend it. And I really hope the developers keep going. Because visually and creatively, they already have something very special.
