Who?
I'm sorry but no. This game is right up my alley for style and I'd love to see a remake, but as it is it's old in all the wrong ways. It's got a terribly clunky UI, the pacing is all over the place and at its heart it's basically a badly-obsolete old-school flight sim that takes for...ev...er to get anything done in. (The tutorial mission involves doing two points of damage per laser shot against a capital ship with ~1200 or so shields; given that even skilled runs can take a full minute to pull off and you'll only get 5-10 shots per run, well, you do the math.)
I applaud the reissue of old games by Retroism and Nightdive Studios, I will probably continue to buy them (but probably only on sale) because when the games originally came out I couldn't afford the $40 to $60 price tag back in 1993 and I would like a shot now at them. There were a lot of good games that came out around 1993: Alien Vs. Predator Duke Nukem II Dune Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty Elite Plus Hard Nova Laser Squad Metal & Lace: The Battle of the Robo Babes (boing) Nova Protostar: War on the Frontier Rex Nebular and the Cosmic Gender Bender Ringworld: Revenge of the Patriarch Space Ace The Space Quest Saga: Roger Wilco Star Trek: The Next Generation Star Wars Star Wars: X-Wing - B-Wing Star Wars: X-Wing - Imperial Pursuit Starflight: A Cosmic Adventure Stellar 7 Ultima: Worlds of Adventure 2 - Martian Dreams Ultrabots Wing Commander: Deluxe Edition Wing Commander: Privateer - Speech Pack Wing Commander: The Secret Missions This was not one of them. You wonder how someone could approve this back then. Will keep slogging to see if possible to play.
Buggy clunky & basially crap
Super, dass Steam jetzt eins meiner Lieblingsspiele aus meiner Jugend zurück gebracht hat. Mal sehen, ob es irgendwann noch ein deutsche Update gibt. Aber auch so macht es Spaß ;-)
Lacks sound plus is generally a bit clunky. Maybe I'll "find" some other dosbox config which INCLUDES THE SOUND and give itg a try but yeah, DO NOT GET THE STEAM VERSION. Less than two bucks on fanatical or no, it's not worth it.
please update german
Starlord is an ambitious game with some interesting ideas, but it’s hampered by clunky execution and especially dull combat. Released in the mid-'90s, this space strategy and management hybrid had potential, but the gameplay doesn’t hold up for long.

Gameplay
At its core, you manage a star empire: balancing resources, dealing with rival warlords, and trying to dominate the galaxy. You oversee trade routes, planetary economies, and espionage. On paper, it sounds amazing. But in practice, everything feels slow and cumbersome. The menus are clunky, and the UI is dated even by '90s standards. The space battles are where things really fall apart. They’re real-time but lack depth or excitement. Imagine moving blobs around a screen while vaguely trying to shoot at other blobs. That’s the combat experience here—more of a chore than a challenge.

Management Side: Pretty solid. You assign governors, build fleets, and negotiate with factions.
Combat: Straight-up boring. The mechanics are too basic, and there’s no sense of satisfaction when you win a fight.
AI: It’s decent. Rivals do their own thing, which makes the galaxy feel alive, even if they’re not very bright.

Story and Setting
The galaxy is a classic mix of feuding factions and political intrigue, with you as a rising "Starlord." You’re given a title, some planets, and the freedom to build an empire. There’s a vague plot tying it all together, but the real story is how you interact with the galaxy and its inhabitants. The worldbuilding is decent, but it doesn’t do much to draw you in. Without engaging characters or compelling twists, it’s just background noise for the gameplay loop.

The Good

Ambition: The mix of strategy, management, and action was ahead of its time.
Empire Management: Micromanaging planets and fleets is where the game shines.
Dynamic AI: Factions have their own agendas, which keeps things interesting.

The Bad

Combat: Absolutely the worst part. It’s dull, simplistic, and lacks any sense of stakes.
Interface: Painfully clunky. Figuring out what to do and how to do it takes too much effort.
Graphics: Bland even for the mid-'90s, with an uninspired look.
Repetitiveness: After a few hours, the gameplay starts to feel like a grind.

Final Thoughts
Starlord could have been a classic, but it’s held back by boring combat and a lack of polish. The empire management and galaxy-spanning sandbox are interesting, but the repetitive gameplay and bad UI make it tough to stay engaged. If you’re nostalgic for '90s space sims or enjoy fiddly strategy games, it might be worth checking out. Otherwise, skip it—there are far better games in the genre.
