I'll just get straight to the point. A little ranty THE GOOD -This game has beautiful graphics, an an amazing overall theme of Star Wars. The story honestly held its own surprisingly well as I did not expect much, the customization was also surprisingly in depth. The characters both story and EVEN optional Build-A-Merc operators genuinely felt pretty good to great across the board from voice acting to abilities. Not too varied but enough to feel different. THE BAD -As someone who LOVES turn based tactical games I have played many and I have certainly found some things to be incredibly annoying even if not game breaking. One example is the animation speed, my god is it SLOW. That alone wouldn't be the biggest issue but there is also NO SETTING TO CHANGE THE SPEED or ANY way at all that I found to speed up enemy turns or animations in general. It isn't the end of the world sure but sometimes certain missions can just take 10s of more minutes than they needed just because of the sheer amount of B1 battle droids all taking their turns, and GOD FORBID they freeze in place and sit there to think for 5ish seconds while also taking their turns. -Another gripe is how inconsistent things like "line of sight" and "overwatch" are. I have had enemies in overwatch just not get hit, 3 people overwatching one target and only one of them shooting and the other two just don't for some reason, and even people shoot me through straight up huge walls that they SHOULDNT see through. NOT a wall with bars so its plausible or some wall but they are at the edge of it. Like straight up "wall hacks" levels of they shouldn't be able to see. In a game where permadeath could reasonably cause you to lose one of your favorite characters, not knowing whether an overwatch will work or line of sights are accurate is insane. -The third minor gripe i can think of off the top of my head is radial menu, I'm sure it was designed with console in mind but my GOD is it obnoxious. Rotating the camera constantly to hit a target behind someone's radial shouldn't happen. Sometimes clicking on the attack button has even registered as overwatch and when you are trying to do your turns fast (as its the only aspect you can actually speed up) its possible to click the shoot button but have overwatch selected and waste your turn because the mouse cursor didn't register correctly. There are a few other gripes I have but I would rather move on to the game breaking issues for me. THE UGLY -The game admittedly has not had MANY game breaking issues for me however much like dead puppies or mass shootings... ONE is TOO MANY. The first issue I had was a problem where I just straight up kept crashing on loading ANY save. I tried testing if it was just the most recent save that was the problem to no avail. Okay maybe I'll just go load each save and see if one works? WRONG, ALL saves crash while loading. Cool. Guess i'll just restart my whole game. Gotta love throwing away a 40 hour campaign and all that progress. BUT and its a HUUUGE but, at that moment I got the bright idea to click "continue" on the main screen instead of going to the load menu and choosing saves. Worked like a charm. YIPPEE i thought, at least i know a fix. so i log off to play another game with friends, try the "Continue Method" instead of loading saves directly and it crashes. Nothing i do fixed the game short of loading endlessly and getting lucky. Eventually reinstalled the game since no other tech things worked and its worked (so far). -That whole thing is somehow not "that bad" compared to this game's biggest sin. No spoilers but the final mission is kinda long. Pretty long actually. Now a mission being long isn't that bad, but a long mission COMBINED with turns freezing and unskippable enemy turns with no faster animations is annoying. What is even more annoying is having your game get soft locked trying to process someone's turn so you have to load a save or restart the mission. Ah but its the LAST mission. There IS no saving during the combat it places you into where it keeps crashing. Restart mission also restarts from the VERY BEGINNING. Cool so I get to go through the entire mission again, multiple battles of endless enemies, unskippable turns and slow animations with the occasional pondering turn freezes. Then it happens again. My turn wont come... so I do what a patient man would by REINSTALLING the game a THIRD time and doing the final mission a THIRD time. Frozen again, stuck in "waiting for my turn as the camera zooms out of the map then snaps back to my character but wont let me play" limbo again. "Maybe I'll just let it load while I go do people stuff, you know eating and showering. Just some default human being ♥♥♥♥. AN HOUR and its still stuck doing the same camera loop of going out of the map and snapping back. I am LITERALLY soft locked at the final doorstep to this ♥♥♥♥♥ ass cult. -I get there are weird things going on with the dev team. Office politics are at play for sure and that's ass. BUT I am not reviewing their company, or the morals and ethics of screwing over game devs. I AM REVIEWING A GAME I SPENT MY MONEY ON. As a customer I have enjoyed the game. I enjoy the characters and the cool clone wars references. Even the couple other references like KOTOR in there made me smile. But no amount of clone mercs or badass Mandalorians or jedi mysticism is gonna make me look past the genuinely archaic aspects for turn based games and the literal game breaking issues I have had. -Gears Tactics is a game in the same genre that manages to feel 10x smoother and better built AND its older so I used it as a comparison as well as XCOM 2 while judging things and just kept thinking "well Gears wouldn't do that" and "XCOM would have smoothed that out" PERSONAL OPINIONS (Separate because these might be just me) -Firstly, I found the game WAY too easy. I am a strategy vet so I figured I would play on hard difficulty. Not so difficult that it might take away from a first experience but difficult enough to give me a challenge. First few hours gave pretty good challenge. Learning class and ability cohesion and getting used to how everything worked I think in hindsight led to most of the difficulty though. -I have had 0 (ZERO) close calls at all in this game. I started just not even using cover because I need it most of the time. Maybe bond buffs scale too quickly. Maybe making my Hawks a medic so they build bond stimming and healing made her busted because of the constant bond increase. I couldn't tell you, but I have had less than 4 downs all game. 2 of those downs were on the Tel recruitment mission as she was not upgraded compared to the rest of my team who had many bond levels since the beginning of the game. That combined with my misunderstanding of her character play style and someone going down in place of her second down. The other 2 were because of genuine bs overwatches not firing. Not "well they were plausibly kind of maybe POSSIBLY not in the overwatch". Wholegrain straight from the crop overwatches with them dead in the center not working, with them in clear sight out in the open with no cover and no shot on them (No buffs either like evasion that would take away damage or make an overwatch fail". Overall the game just felt not hard very hard but like I said I don't know if that is a me specific thing. -Second "me thing" is that the game felt surprisingly short. Probably could have beaten it in under 20 hours if i wasn't replaying missions and crashing. TL;DR nah just read it, The United States had an average reading level of below the 8th grade for it's citizens and honestly the way things are going it doesn't look like the US is gonna start getting MORE literate. Learn how to read a wall of text. I am LITERALLY typing all of this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ out at 2am while watching my camera bounce on it crazy style in the final fight so you don't waste your money. The 1 “not sold” market is read from the Steam price pass of Aug 31: that day the store answered for this game elsewhere and gave no price there. The 14 priced markets are the same rows as the table above — each the latest price we hold, dated here when it is older than that pass. The 0 marked “not asked” were not put to this store at all — either it has no storefront there or we do not collect it yet, and neither is a statement about the game. Constant freezes between turns, happens basically every combat mission. PC is completely unresponsive and needs to be power cycled to hard reset. Can't believe this still happens on a 9800x3d, 32gb of ram and a 4090 but go figure. Technical issues aside, I've done multiple missions but haven't seen anything that really improves upon the XCOM formula. In many ways it's been mediocre at best. Really feels like a XCOM clone with Star Wars elements. Wish I could experience more to see if the game improves further on, but as it stands I have needed to repeat missions multiple times from the beginning because of constant freezing issues, since there isn't an automatic mid mission save. It really gets frustrating losing multiple missions of progress after a while.
If you liked XCOM2, you will like this game
This is the most boring turn based game i've played. The gameplay is dumbed down as if its meant for kids just learning how to play a turn based game. It draws you in with a "star wars" title and lets you down. The combat has some variety, that is the only improvement in the turn based genre. go get hostages and extract while reinforcements are incoming, thats a good idea, it was fun the first couple of times... and then it became incredibly boring because the gameplay is simplistic. In wasteland 3, each character has their individual "ultimate" that they get on their own by getting successful hits on enemies, its not a shared resource like Zero Company. You can use as many grenades as you have in your inventory, given they all have a specific AP requirement to use them. You can level up your coordination and get more AP per character. You can equip 2 weapons and swap between them for different scenarios or enemies while in combat, you're not limited to 4 total weapons for every character in your party with the only difference being the skin you put on them. There are medical items you can use, you don't need to have a designated "medic" in your party just to heal. Overall, this game is just a money grab, and thats disgusting since everyone was thrilled for a turn based star wars game. It is worth $10-$15, not the $50 we all paid. This was a huge let down. Rating 3/10
Yeah, that was just a great game...I had high hopes for this before it came out and it met them! The story was surprisingly engaging and quite a fun star wars story all in all. Can't wait to see what these devs do next because this was awesome!
This is a highly addicting fun ass game. If you love xcom, you'll love this game and if you are a star wars fan, then you are getting the best of both worlds with this purchase. Highly recommend. Performance wise it runs damn near perfect on my side and I'm at max settings getting over 100 fps but i have a beefy pc so i can only speak from experience.
Good soldiers follow orders.
A fantastic game! I'm not a fan of the faces available at character creation, but that's it's only strike in my opinion. I love the camaraderie, the fantastic voice work, the dialogue. It's just chef's kiss!
As of now, the game is unplayable, even after the patch. I crash about once an hour. Did a fresh install a few times. Did the DDU thing, rolled back drivers, updated drivers. It's such a good game, but way too damn buggy right now. I really hope they bcan fix this soon, I want to play this without crashing all the time.
