Such a freakin' good game! Barotrauma is all about having fun with friends with jankyness, science and everything going from calm to sh1tstorm in just a few moments. - Can you steal fentanyl from the doctors, shove the stolen fentanyl into your friends' skull and watch them vomit everywhere on your ship? You can! - Can you drink unidentified liquids you find in a random trashcan hopefully it won't kill you? Sure! - Can you sneak a zombie virus onto the submarine, and watch as the plague you created wipes the whole squad? Of course! - Can you actually take the game seriously and go on adventures with your crew, getting richer, battling more and more dangerous enemies and upgrading your sub? Go for it! - Can you make improvements like circuits that even Jensen Huang would be jealous of? Hell yeah! The game also has different classes who contribute to the success of the missions in their own different way, and it is quite easy to find a class that you vibe with. If you like to drive and/or lead be the captain. If you dont like to think, just want to shoot stuff, be the security officer. If you actually like to think and are at least borderline autistic, be an electrician. If you are not, be the mechanic. If you always wanted to be a saviour, be the medic! If you want to be the lil b1tch to the crew, be the assistant (just joking, assistans are also very helpful). All in all, this game has it all. Even if you want to fk around with your friends, or even if you want to take the game seriously and actually advance in the campaign. The game HAS DEPTH (pun intended). The only thing you'll need are friends.

I've never laughed, cried, and screamed harder in my live playing this game. Got it gifted by a friend, loaded it up, skipped the tutorial because a real man tackles his problems head first. Decided i was gonna be the mechanic and engineer at the same time. Throw 4 fuel rods into the reactor, immediately overheats and blows up... Scream at the top of my lungs as i scramble for the fire extinguisher and managed to put it out. My friend comes down looks at me, looks at the smoking reactor, turns around and walks off. Medic comes down, screams at me for being an idiot but heals me regardless. Go about my tasks afterwards repairing and keeping everything in check. Start messing around and learning all about the wiring. Change all the lights to be brighter and more modern. Friends like the new lights... The native animals did not... Water presser did not... Buoyancy did not... The clowns did not... My life... was short... and not well lived...
Things to know before buying: P2P servers- Servers are hosted by players and you play by their rules and mods. Griefers- This game's a donkey farm. Full of as*es. Never in my 17 years of lifeless gaming have I seen so many guys desperate for attention in a single game. Just when I'm having fun or the mission is going smoothly, a jacka*s who's parents divorced because of him has to join and blow up the reactor, the entire submarine or steal all fuel rods and toss them into the abyss. Non-beginner friendly- There's a ton to learn and nobody has time for your clueless ass. They might answer a question or two but the rest you have to find out yourself either from experimenting or watching other's videos. Annoying randoms- Goofing and screaming in the mic might be funny when it's time for fun, but when sh*t needs to be done it becomes tiresome. Having to communicate with the other person who actually wants to finish the mission all the while people are arguing in voice chat like a group of 12 year olds isn't fun and ruined multiplayer for me. Having to do a 7 minutes mission in 45 minutes because of annoying teammates is the ultimate test of patience. I literally spent 40 minutes trying to do a relic recovery mission or whatever with another guy who was captain. And he couldn't leave the submarine because the morons would sink it , so I had to go with someone else. Everyone continued having their "racism" debate or whatever they were talking about and completely ignored me, the captain and the mission. My patience ran out and I went alone and died 1v3-ing a pack of mudraptors and quit. Not the first time and probably not the last time I'll experience something like this if I ever decide to give multiplayer another chance. Constant team composition problems- Having 12+ people inside the Barsuk or Dugong, the starter submarines, means you're not doing any sh*t for more than half of the time, unless you always volunteer to go out mining. 6-7 people are perfect for those subs and anything more is too much. Whenever a bot is hired , either because there's not enough people or there's a bot with 100 in one skill , someone gets their job stolen. 1 bot can do the work of 2-3 engineers and he fixes stuff the moment they can be fixed, so you can't compete with one unless you camp the items to fix them the moment they break. If the submarine is big, there's always gonna be the problem of people leaving and bots being hired because of the lack of manpower, which results in people that join after this getting bored because the bots do pretty much everything , which results in more people disconnecting. Obnoxious single-player gameplay- If you played Rimworld, that's exactly the kind of experience offline mode has to offer. The bots in your crew just walk around like idiots until you tell them what to do and they just follow the orders blindly. Accidentally hit the door and took so little damage that it would heal in a minute or 2 or a few seconds from resting on a bed ? The medic will use half of what's in the med cabinet to treat even the smallest of bruises. Parked at the entrance of a cave and there's an ice spire nearby ? Whoever's on the turrets will shoot all your ammo trying to destroy it. (lost 3 boxes of piercing coilgun ammo) Got some hull completely destroyed ? As long as it's not facing the interior of a room to cause flood , the bots won't fix it. You have to go out and fix it yourself.(you can also fix it from inside with the right angle but the bots simply don't care) Now personal problems with the game: Being in one of the Balkan countries- Most servers around me have non-english speakers so there's few servers I can play on and I mostly have to play by rules or mods I don't like. Either permadeath, traitors or 30+ mods. Consider your region too before buying. Massive downtime or zero downtime between missions- Having 2 minutes to go around the outpost and buy what you need isn't fun, and neither is 30 minutes. If you have friends to play with on a private server 100% get the game. The game itself is super fun but the players drag it down like the Latcher.
Play with friends for the full experience. Barotrauma is super fun with a specific group of people and with mods, the roles of gunners are respected as they kill the biggest guys yet everyone respects the mechanic and medics most, every single player has a distinctive role and if they dont fulfill it then everyone dies. Death is constant so learn to accept it, unless you are a medic with the (basically necessary) Neurotrauma mod. This game is basically like Minecraft under the aspect of modding, without mods it sure is a game ig... But with mods this becomes one of the best games ever. OCEANS WILL BOIL UNDER OUR MIGHT! TO CAPTAIN HOBO! TO GUNNER HEXMET! TO GLORYYY!!!

Note : ★★★★☆
It take so long to learn, but its worth it. Havent had a multiplayer experience like this in a game before. You guys have to be cooking a space version of this game. Logical next step.
overall, this is the best submarine game i've ever played. it's definitely worth playing solo, even though it focuses on multiplayer. tbh, don't expect too much from the bots in the campaign, they'll do the worst things you couldn't imagine 10/10 HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Barotrauma is a game that feels like complete chaos when you first load into it, and somehow becomes more chaotic the more you understand how it works. It is a game about holding things together, where everything is on the verge of catastrophic failure, and it makes the game absolutely riveting. The first thing that clicked for me was the atmosphere. The game nails the feeling of being trapped in a fragile metal tube at the bottom of an alien ocean. The darkness outside is oppressive, the creatures are unpredictable, and the submarine itself doesn't feel like a safe haven, rather more like a collection of systems you have to babysit, that MIGHT keep you alive if they don't feel like suddenly collapsing under pressure. There's a constant, underlying tension even during quieter moments, because you always know something can, and probably will go wrong. Visually, it's fairly simple, but in an intentional way. Everything is clear and functional, which is important because the game gets overwhelming quick. When alarms are blaring, water is pouring in, and something is chewing through the hull, you need to be able to read what's happening immediately. Barotrauma deals with that by making the chaos readable without losing any of it's intensity. The real core of the game in my opinion is how all the systems and roles interact. Every role matters, and in more than a 'you get a different tool' way. Engineers keep devices working, mechanics fix the endless sub damage, medics desperately try to keep people alive with whatever questionable substances they can get their hands on, and security handles the many things that inevitably turn up outside & inside. And, none of them feel optional when things fall apart. What makes things even better is how fast a situation can escalate (Yes I'm a masochist, how did you know?) A minor hull breach turns into a flooded compartment, which leads to electrical failures, which leads to the reactor being unstable, which leads to half the crew panicking, while the other half try to fix a problem they don't even understand. It's a constant chain reaction of problems, and solving one often creates two more. The game is at it's best in that space. That said, the game can be rough around the edges. The learning curve is steep, and it doesn't do much to ease you into it. New players will feel completely lost at first, and even after hours of playing, there are still mechanics that can feel unintuitive or poorly explained. The controls and UI can also be a bit clunky at times, especially in moments where precision is needed. And creating a ship, has genuinely traumatised me. I had to learn a full college level electrical engineering education before I could begin to understand ship building in this game. Be Warned. It's not the cleanest or most polished experience in the traditional sense, but that almost works in its favour, Barotrauma is messy, unpredictable, and unfair. But it's also exceptionally engaging because of it. It's a game about things going wrong, and learning to deal with that in real time. If you enjoy cooperative games, complex systems, or just the idea of desperately trying (and failing, usually failing) to keep a sinking submarine together while something horrible scratches in your throat, it's very easy to recommend. Just, Please. Make sure someone knows how to work the reactor.
