A great retro style platformer. Good mix of puzzle solving and platforming, great old school feel. You gain abilities as you play through, for example Might the power to push and pull certain objects etc. You can switch between two characters, Spud and the Prince who is a frog. Tho the prince doesnt do much, but there is parts where you need him to open doors for yea. The controls are fluid. The gameplay consists of you going around doing quest for people and going into dungeons, killing stuff etc. The only issue i've found, is the inventory. Nothing big, but its small. You'll find yourself dropping items in order to get other ones. So you have only take what you need. Other then that, I'd give this and 8/10.
I was so excited when I discovered this game on here. The screenshots looked really charming and the description really sold me. It draws inspiration from Zelda and Metroid, woohoo! So when it was on sale I immediately got it. And at frist, it seemed like it was the perfect game for me. It was a nice, dream-like fantasy world and I very much felt like I was a little kid again. So Spud's Quest is a mix between a Platformer and an Adventure game. You jump around and pick up items to use at other points to continue in the story. There's temples like in Zelda and you gain new abilities like in a typical Metroidvania game. So far the game seems perfect for me. But there's a third title in the description, Dizzy. Which I've never heard of before. Apparently it was an Adventure title where you would pick up items and use them just like in this game. The only problem is, because it was an old game, you could only hold 4 items at a time. For some reason, the developer of this game decided to not go with the time and limit your inventory to four slots. So at all times, you can only carry around 4 items. So when you find something new you think you might need, you need to drop another of your items. Then when you actually need it at some point (or think you do) you need to head all the way back to where you dropped it. At first this wasn't a problem, but after some time it got really annoying. It doesn't help that there seem to be a ton of red herings which you don't actually need. Now some of you might be patient enough, but for me it was the reason to drop this game after the third temple (the ice temple). It just became too much of a hassle. Another issue I had with the game were the enemies. At first, they're not much of an obstacle. The bats just fly around you randomly, so you can bascically can stand where you are and throw red dots (which is what Spud does as an attack). Sometimes they hit you and after a while you will be at low health. The only way I found to restore yourself is to pay for it with some NPCs placed in front of temples. It's actually quite tedious to go and get healed there. In my opinion, enemies should just have dropped health pickups instead of money to go and buy health with. So the enemies weren't a problem, until SUDDENLY, you meet a new type of enemy, a kind of yeti. Which are way overpowered and caused me to drop down to low health A LOT. Which meant a lot of tedious running back to the healer. The final straw for me was how buggy the game got in the third temple. The goal of it was to find babies and bring them back to the entrance. But carrying around the babies and throwing them was quite buggy. They didn't want to go where I thought the game wanted me to take them and in the end, the only way to beat this temple for me was to glitch them through walls. If you don't think this (especially all the backtracking and the 4 item inventory) won't bother you, then please, get this game. It does play like a charming game from back in the 16 bit days and puzzlesolving can be quite rewarding. But you need patience.
Spud's Quest is an absolute gem and incredible value for money. Story: A frog formally known as prince is in a bit of bother, his whole royal family has been turned into little amphibians by an evil wizard and it's up to you (Spud) to make things right. Most of the characters in the game seem almost solipsistic in their narrow mindedness, it's humorous though, the writing is acerbic and dead pan and I can't actually think of a time that an NPC was glad to see me, quick though they are to ask for something... typical isn't it. The world that the developer has created is funny and self aware, the game really is charming but I mean it in the truest sense of the word you'll know what I mean after playing it. Presentation: It's a labour of love and it shows throughout. Spud himself is a bundle of determination, the whole game oozes with character, every screen is beautifully realised and the variety is pretty outstanding, green and joyful one moment, dark and decrepit the next. The world that surrounds Spud is expansive and ever full of intrigue. The music is also wonderful and evocative, it easily matches the quality of the visuals to create a incredibly polished package. Very Impressive for a game created by one person. Gameplay: Spud handles superbly, other than being able to jump he can throw things, when I say 'things' that's because I'm not sure what it is he is throwing, but by god can he throw them, and when you throw whatever it is he is throwing into water, the water splashes! I don't know why that matters but it's the sort of thing you expect to be missing, mainly because it doesn't matter if the water splashes but it does splash, and that makes me happy. He can also climb, pull blocks and flip switches, he's a swiss-army spud! His froggy chum can also interact with things which comes in handy when solving puzzles, and puzzles play a big part of this game because that's where the challenge lies. They're pretty difficult too, it also makes this game indefinite in length, who's to say you'll solve a certain puzzle, at all! When you do solve something you either get that lovely warm gloating feeling when solving something difficult,or you feel like a prat for not getting it sooner, either way the puzzles are enjoyable in their variety. BUY IT!
Makes me sad that no one seems to know this game I was really shocked on how good this game is when I started playing it , in the store it shows to be a poorly done platformer but its far FAR from that. It is actually a Great platformer that I really enjoyed Has a nice style and animations and lovely soundtracks. The game is really hard I mean wow, and it is very long I would guess 6 hours to finish the game without the secrets and whats not and 10 hours for full game IF you are fast enough with the Puzzles. Items are thrown all over the game , Shovles , Herbs , Crowbars.... etc And you store them in your inventory and you must figure out where to use them next, where to use it where to put this how to finish this puzzle where to go next, Keep in mind you have a 4 slots inventory so you can drop items in a place and pick them up later, It relies on common sense and intelligence with its puzzles, I mean " A tree is there and there is no bridge , use a pickaxe on the tree so it falls down thus for creating a bridge " So yeah the game-play is really fun and hard and long so thats a huge plus for this game though I guess they would'v made a lot more sales if it went with a 4,99$ price to attract more people, dont get me wrong the store price justifies the game it really does but this game received some really bad marketing so its not that popular and a customer would see it with that price and just skips it. It is for the old school platformer fan, The enemy fights are not really that strong the game focuses on puzzling finding secrets and intelligence more than it focuses on battles so monsters fighting is pretty basic dont expect much of it. The game has the typical oldschool story, someone turned to a frog you gotta collect the 3 essences to break the curse typical old school story haha but it has its own twist that makes it fun so you enjoy it as you move on. OH yeah and I love the ability to press a button to switch and play with the frog so it accesses small places and unlocks switches for you and reaches places you cant ( it cant pick up items but can use switches and shows you where to go ) and it does not die it just respawns back at you so its good to know if you can make a jump or whatever lol (TL;DR ) A Very good classical old school style Platformer that is both Hard AND long , yes takes time to finish, relies on Common sense to finish puzzles and they are hard, good animation, designs, story-line and objectives, a game for the old school platformer out there : ). Pros : 1 - Great animations and level design and soundtracks. 2 - More than 4 hours and still at 20% so yeah this game is pretty long. 3 - Puzzles everywhere, pick up items, figure out where to put them yourself, Can get really hard but its fun use your brain. 4 - Old school story that is predictable but has a special twist with it in this game. 5 - Good style on switching between character and frog to access certain places Cons 1 - Although in main menu I set it to Full, the game does not go on full screen, just windowed mode that scales on your screen. 2 - Encountered a small bug that can be used to my advantage but its not that big of a deal 3 - The game has "unlockables" that works as in-game achievements, Sadly no steam achievements that couldv been a huge plus 4 - the game actually has Trading cards but it does not show it in Store page so I would guess the devs are a bit Lazy ? So thats it if you're looking for an old school long challenging platforming adventure then this game right here might just do it. 8/10
Was really excited to play this game. Absolutely loved the Fantastic Dizzy games growing up which this attempts to pay homage to. I was however quite disappointed once I started playing this one however. The main difficulty of this game lies in its craftsmenship. Really poor hit detection and faulty controls make it very frustrating to play. I made it halfway through the game, 4 hours for me, when an irreversible error left the game unplayable from that point. Items get stuck in the walls with no way to recover them, and guess what? That's it, the game is broken and you can't play any further. I can't possibly reccommend this game. It wasn't fun. It broke. It was unoriginal. And again, it broke. I want those 6 hours of my life back.
About four hours into the game and I have to say, this game is not good. I saw it on greenlight awhile back with the promise of a modestly good Metroid-inspired title, and I can overlook the artstyle not being particularly appealing as long as it has good game mechanics. It does not. The gripe with the game really comes down to one thing -- inventory. The worst part of point and click adventure games is that you don't know what item to use on what part of the game to progress. This game has exactly that, and has the gall to throw in intentional red herrings that add no meaningful element to the gameplay or story, its there purely for obfuscation. Its just stupid. On top of that, quite a few puzzles do not have any apparent or intuitable solution, leading you to wander aimlessly wondering how to progress. Lastly, there's really no meaningful interaction with enemies in this game. Its like they are mere placeholders rather than designed to be interesting obstacles. If the enemies didn't exist, you'd barely notice it except that the character has a strange command where he throws an apple for no reason. I'm only maybe 1/3rd or 1/4th into the game and don't really want to continue. The opening is just too much of a lackluster showing, the game isn't fun. Its also somewhat buggy and the exe hangs on close. Just pass, it didn't live up the promise. There's not enough charm or depth in the story, puzzles, or gameplay to warrant a purchase. The only redeeming factor might be that it might be a good game to speedrun, since I and others discovered some fairly easy OOB glitches that could be exploited (always a plus). If I ever finish the game I will go back and update this review. Until then, I do not recommend this title.
While definitely far from perfect, Spud's Quest feels just like a Dizzy arcade adventure game of yesteryear. The art is cute and colorful, with plenty of unique locations and one-off NPCs. The dynamic day-night cycle and changing weather occasionally create some truly beautiful combinations. The world is huge, and spans multiple biomes, from forest with a very Dizzy-esque treehouse village in it, to jungle, to frozen mountains, and ocean floor, all rendered with a lot of loving detail. Most inventory puzzles are well design, and rarely require moon logic to solve them. The game is fun, colorful, charming, and on occasion makes you feel really clever. Now, I would be lying if I said there are no negatives - there are, and plenty, but honestly, I'm just happy games like this are still being made.
A great throwback to simpler times of gaming with an obvious reference to Dizzy, the adventurous egg. Simple yet engaging, with high-fidelity old pixel art style and a lot to play around. A lot less fun if you were born after 1985, though. Too bad there are gameplay issues: a few bugs, a dash of illogical puzzles (come on, a crocodile tooth??!!?) and some clunky controls (use Xpadder to map the keyboard with custom sensibility). In a way, those problems constitute a great tribute to old games. Maybe it truly was features.
