Sprinter——
Minimalist games are never the easiest to develop. People try and fail all of the time. Developers tend to believe that because there isn’t very much to them that they’re simple to make. They’re not. It takes a special concept for it to work and then after that there is the execution. Sometimes the concepts just don’t work as much as they may have worked in the head of the person who was attempting to make the game. Other times the concepts are fine but the developer or development team just doesn’t have the ability to pull it off whether through a lack of skill or some other means. When you discover minimalist games that actually work you know that you’re in for a special treat. Such is thankfully the case with Light Step Games debut game on Steam, Sprinter. The concept is very simple. Sprint to the end of each level by successfully navigating a series of obstacles that are overcome with a timely press of a button or a push of the right stick, etc. Sounds easy but it isn’t. Oh no. Sprinter offers a tough challenge. Timing is absolutely crucial. If you’re even a tenth of a second off then you can kiss goodbye to that attempt. Every chapter throws a new mechanic into the mix that makes the game that little bit more difficult until you’re at your very wits end trying to complete each level in normal mode. Thankfully there is an easier mode and there is a challenge in that level too but it’s nowhere near as difficult as the game is supposed to be. If you enjoy those sorts of challenges then you’ll want to be playing this. Although there is a likelihood that you will zoom through the game I do urge you not to miss the little cut scenes between each level. There you will discover an emotional story of a family – a husband, wife and daughter – who are dealing with a personal tragedy. I think it’s a superb touch for a game such as this and really meshes well with the mechanics. It would be such a simple thing to overlook and just sprint to the next level because that is what we are used to doing but sometimes you need to take a breather and appreciate the other things that are going on around you. Life isn’t a sprint yet we take it as one all too often. You can complete the game in a couple of hours and then you can go for the gold times if you’re an achievement hunter or a completionist. At $7.99 there’s potentially better value games elsewhere but that’s not to tell you that the game isn’t of quality. I certainly enjoyed my time with the game. But it’s not so different to The Impossible Game which is priced a full $3 less than Sprinter (not to mention other games within the genre). Yes, that game is a little older than this one but it is direct competition. So as much as I recommend Sprinter it is with perhaps a small caveat. If I were the type who needed to play the game now then I’d pick it up on its 20% special promotion otherwise I’d wait until it was discounted again at a later date.
An Illustrated Action Runner with a Deep Emotional Story
https://youtu.be/Qpti4DJ5ZZQ + A deep illustrated story about a husband, wife, and daughter and how they deal with a tragedy + Very emotional sountrack that fits in very well with the game and story + The gameplay is simple, but very engaging and can be quite challenging as new mechanics get added + Controls are easy to learn and the game does a great job explaining the mechanics in the tutorials + There's an easy mode which keeps the game from getting too frusterating later on + "Gold Times" which can add to replayability / achievements - Since the levels are extremely short (typically ~10seconds) depending on your skill you can finish the game in a very short amount of time. I believe there's 6 chapters total (in my expeirence the first 4 chapters take around 15-40mins to complete depending on your knowledge and difficulty setting) [See video above]
Sprinter is a charming adventure indie game with unique gameplay and a charming story. If this review is too long for you, I suggest you to only read the first paragraph about the game's content and the final verdict at the end.
What is happening in the game:
You play as Emily, Rosie or Lyle and you have to, well, run. There are obstacles on your way to the finish line and you have to get past them by temporarily disabling them at the right time. There is also a nice story that comes with it and all of this combined creates a very pleasant-to-play gaming experience.
Pros:

Graphics | As you can tell just by checking out the screenshots on this game's Store page, Sprinter looks really minimalistic and, in my opinion, it's as minimalistic as it can get. Everything you see on your screen is the character you're playing as, the path, the obstacles, the instructions and the story, nothing more. I'm glad that this is the case as any more details and aesthetics would only distract the player when trying to beat the level.
Gameplay | I have to say that this is one of the most unique and enjoyable concepts in video gaming this year. You will have to replay each stage over and over again to reach the end in time (or later, to get the gold medal on each level). This is because you have to time each action right and it can be quite difficult when you have to hold down multiple buttons at once. I don't really like games where you have to repeat the same thing over and over again, but this game certainly made it quite enjoyable.
Soundtrack and Sound Effects | The soundtrack is really amazing and it fits the minimalistic art style as well. It's also much better when you use headphones when playing, so consider doing that. Also, each time you disable one of the obstacles a certain tone is played. When you have to press one button after the other without stopping much, you kind of create a melody in the process. It's a pretty nice idea.
Story | The story is quite deep, it talks about different people, their lives, their bothers and their ways to deal with problems. One of those ways includes running, which is kind of the main theme of this game. Although no words are used to explain what is happening, you get a few pictures for every stage you complete and you have to take a look at them to see what the story is about. I think a few well-written lines wouldn't hurt, but this way is alright as well.
Replayability | Surprisingly, there is also a lot of room for replaying the levels. When you complete the whole chapter, you can replay each included level in order to get the gold medal on it. There are two times set for each level: one for beating it and one for getting the gold medal. The gold medal time really requires you to master the level, while the "to beat" time only needs you to get through without any major mistakes (which can be quite difficult as well).
Controls | I used my Steam Controller to play this game and I have to say that the controls are placed well and they are quite enjoyable. You have to press a lot of different buttons within a short time frame, so it's useful if you have them close together.
Achievements | There are achievements for beating every stage and for beating it again with all gold medals. It's a nice addition to the gameplay and encourages the player a bit more, which can be useful in this game at times.
Multiple OSs Supported | Sprinting is now easy on SteamOS and MacOS as well. Hooray!

Cons:

Controls | "But didn't you mention controls in the Pros section as well? What's up with that?" Indeed, but there, I was talking about controller controls. Here comes the bad part: keyboard controls. I prefer playing games on my keyboard since that's what I'm used to. However, playing Sprinter with a keyboard is pretty much impossible. I could barely complete a few levels with it and I was pretty much forced to switch to a controller. I don't think that such games should only be playable with an additional device since that is not something everyone can afford.
Difficulty | Towards the end, I found this game to be a bit too difficult to still be enjoyable. I could barely complete levels and I needed more than fifteen minutes for each one and that was not even for the gold time. In my opinion, some levels should be made easier.
No Trading Cards | It's a shame that Sprinter doesn't have Trading Cards. I bet the badge would've been quite lovely.

The final verdict:
Overall, the game is really really good. The story is good, the graphics are awesome and the soundtrack is very enjoyable as well. The levels can be quite difficult and they get even more difficult as you make progress through the game. If you want to buy this game, you need to make sure you own a controller, otherwise, you will probably not enjoy this game as much. When I stumbled across this game, I didn't have incredibly high hopes. To be completely honest, I assumed it would be some boring flash game someone put on Steam to make a quick buck. However, after playing this game, it's clear that Sprinter was made with a lot of love. The art style is clean and unique and its simple appearance complements the gameplay incredibly well. Mixed with the serene, ambient music, it creates a great atmosphere. In fact, despite some of the final levels taking a lot of attempts, I don't think I got nearly as frustrated as I probably should have. I attribute this entirely to the soothing and rewarding soundtrack. The gameplay itself is fun, addictive and ultimately satisfying. The controls work perfectly - whenever you fail, it's always your own fault. Fairly simple mechanics, combining reaction speeds, hand-eye coordination and split second timing. No qualms on this front. However, the game definitely isn't perfect. Firstly, the content. The story consists of 30 levels, which comes out to about 2 hours play time. I don't personally care about play time, especially with indie titles like this, but be prepared that the game isn't that long. I liked what they tried to do with the story, but it just didn't work for me. Difficulty curve is a bit off, struggled mostly at the start (learning how to cut corners perfectly) and the final chapter, which would be gruelling if it weren't for the music (seriously guys, I really like the music). Also, if you do the whole game in one sitting, the colours can get a bit harsh on the eyes. Overall though, it's a great game. Interesting, fun and the kinda game you can come back to in six months and experience it as if it was your first time. Solid indie game and I'm curious to see what else the dev will come up with.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xg_hDZ7x6lo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lal0ksigf_k
Brilliant. I just have no words!
Fun, little game. It looks pretty and peaceful, the music is calm and soothing, the minimalistic story is very touching as well, but don't let that fool you. Underneath hides a very challenging game. You'll die and restart very often - at first by the controls that you need to get used to, but later on more so by the tricky designed levels. It has a lot of trial and error, usually I dislike that, but I think it works here. It had me frustrated a few times, but I kept going back to it, so that says a lot as well. Very addictive. Especially trying to clear the Gold times can prove quite hard, and only for those who don't value their sanity, which I - of course - all completed.
