In Short
Spoorky is a 2D platformer where you play as a pig named Spoorky. He comes equipped with a sword that he can use to kill enemies and dash. The game has a level creator and a training mode that has 8 levels made by the developers. 🔵 Pros +Good graphics +Training levels explain the mechanics well +Good level creator 🔴 Cons -Not a lot of control or graphical options
🎮 In-Depth Gameplay Analysis
When you begin Spoorky you will need to complete some training levels before you can create or play online levels. The training levels summarize the game mechanics well and are fun to play. There are 2 worlds in the training mode. There is the Tropical Island and the Winter Island as the names say they both have specific themes to them and introduce new mechanics that you can use when creating your own levels. The further you get in the training worlds the more levels you can make and you obtain new items, enemies and blocks to use in your own levels. Both of the worlds contain 4 levels and you need to complete all 4 of them to advance to the next world. The game's mechanics are pretty simple and very similar to Super Mario. There are 3 cakes in the levels that you can gather for extra coins and points on the leaderboard. The cakes are optional though so the only thing that you need to get is the jewel which ends the level. Your character has a sword that you can use to dash in mid-air and otherwise you have your basic platformer mechanics like jumping. The controls feel weird at first since you move with the WASD keys and jump and attack with the mouse. The game also has gamepad support but I'm more comfortable playing with the mouse and keyboard so I didn't try that. There's also no option to change the controls for keyboard and mouse but you can customize gamepad controls which is pretty annoying since I'm sure many people won't like the controls in the game. The game has a leaderboard system that gives you rewards depending on your score. Some of the rewards you can get are coins and hooves you can use the coins to buy new items, enemies, and blocks for your levels and the hooves serve as badges in your profile. There are several hooves in the game ranging from bronze hooves all the way to platinum hooves. The more common hooves like bronze and silver you can get just by playing levels but for the platinum hoove, you need to be the first in the weekly challenge's leaderboard. The weekly challenge is an event where the best maps of the week are chosen and the players fight for the first place in the levels to get the platinum hoove. Each level has their own leaderboard and you advance on it by getting a better score than someone else. There are several things that affect the amount of score you get like fruits that are placed in the levels, cakes, your time and the number of enemies you kill. ✖ Cross Platform The game also has Cross Platform support which means that you can download the Spoorky app on your IOS or Android phone and play the game with that. I tried it out quickly and the game worked well on phone and I was able to login to my PC account and play on that. 🛠 Level Creator The level creator is simple but powerful. It's easy enough to use so that anyone can create their own levels but you need to be good to get your levels in the weekly challenge. You obtain items, blocks and enemies to use in your levels by buying them with coins or beating the training levels. The coins are a free currency that you can obtain just by playing the game. To unlock the level creator you need to play the first training level and even after that you can only create 2 levels and have basic blocks and enemies to use. Once you beat all training levels you have you can make 8 levels and have more items to use when creating levels. When you open the level editor there is a lot of options in the screen at once and it might take a while to know what they all do but you can start creating your levels by selecting a block and just drawing them on the map. You have your basic tools such as delete, undo and move that you can use if you make mistakes. There are a few necessary things that every level must have and they are your character, 3 cakes, a treasure chest and the jewel that ends the level. When you've created your level and you're happy with it you can choose to publish it before the level is actually published you need to complete your level getting all the cakes, the treasure chest and reaching the end of the level. Once you've done that your level will be published and it will be available for everyone to play. 💰 Content & Pricing The game costs 8€ and has plenty of content for that price. I would especially recommend it if you ever wished that Mario Maker was on PC since Spoorky is very similar to that.
Technical analysis
🎥 Graphics and 🔩 Performance The game has good looking pixel art graphics and clean animations. The performance is also good never dropped below 60 fps. The game doesn't have true fullscreen though so if you have more than one monitor your mouse will go to other screens if you move it too much. (GTX 680, I7-77OOK, 16GB DDR4) 🎶 Sounds and Music The game has good sounds and the soundtrack is also good. There are only a few songs in the game since there are only 2 worlds. 🐛 Bugs I didn't find any bugs with the game.
Conclusion
Spoorky is a great platformer with an emphasis on community created content. The game has good mechanics overall and is a good purchase if you're a fan of platformers with level creators. Rating 8/10 Review based on version 1.0 This copy of the game was received for free from the developers for review purposes
Follow our curator page, Alexander's Club Curations if you like and want to see reviews like this one!
Real fun well made platformer with editor. Great graphics/animations and sound effects/music. Gets quite addictive. Loads of various features as described on store page.
Should the size of the game not bother you, Spoorky is one that I can genuinely decree to be a very fun experience. Many would say that, despite all else, should something be fun, it's worth it; Spoorky is definitely fun enough to earn that pedigree from me. With the assumption that more content will gradually come after release (as the game feels somewhat incomplete aesthetic-wise) and the influx of new players creating more levels to compete in, it can only get better from where it stands now. Just be sure to bring an empty stomach. + Far more fun than frustrating + Create Mode is easily accessible, quantitatively expansive, and varied + Game controls and performs great + Small, but invigorating soundtrack - Resources in Create Mode are limited - Slippery controls make precise platforming a hassle (especially with spikes) - Lack of overall game modes may spur early boredom Read the full review at https://www.keengamer.com/article/20497_spoorky-review
I really wanted to like this game... Pros - The sword swing attack was pretty cool and was a fun addition to 2d platforming - The weekly challenge Having a set of levels for players to compete on is a fun way to attempt to master a level. Cons- - The enemies The enemies in the game are terrible. Like other sandbox games (Mario Maker), enemies are going to be spammed in levels. The problem is that the enemies range from a fast moving bouncing projectile from a plant, a ladybug that throws balls at you at the worst time possible, and a spider that climbs along the roof and rains down death on you. I really feel like the enemies only add artificial difficulty to levels, since if you put enough of them in one area one of them will kill you sooner or later - The scoring system The scoring system is the main competitive aspect to the game, but it is also pretty poorly designed. You get score for 3 things, collecting fruits/killing enemies, beating the level quickly, and special bonuses/collectables. This sounds fine, but the special bonuses ruin it for me. There are 2 special bonuses. One is for beating the level without getting hit, which is usually very hard when there are so many enemies in every level. The other is killing every enemy in the level, which is still hard (and sometimes impossible) to get in most levels. These 2 bonuses give points based on how many points you have previously (+50% and +30% respectively). That means that not only do you have to beat a level as fast as possible, you have to beat it as fast as possible, without getting hit by a single attack from the seemingly endless amount of enemies in levels. - Badges To make scoring points and beating levels easier, they added badges. These range from gaining 2x points for a little bit, to 10 seconds of invincibility. The problem is that you have to spend coins for these badges, and they are a one time thing. That means that the top spot on the leaderboard goes to whoever happens to get lucky and use badges at the right time. I presonally think that using badges should sisqualify you from the leaderboard.
É um bom jogo. Gostei!
