Been playing this almost since the initial release in Early Access. At that time, I didn't leave a review, as it would have been Not Recommended, and I sincerely didn't want to do that to an indie game, especially something that was trying so hard to channel DQ Randomizer and also had a lot of charm and a ton of potential, despite some rough spots. There have been a lot of improvements since then - new game modes, new chapters, some QoL stuff, and with respect to the newer content (which is accompanied by some spiffy expanded gear), we see also some very interesting new builds start to materialize. It's definitely a lot of fun to experiment with janky combos and see how they fare against the various challenges of the campaign. Overall, replayability wins out and gets a Recommended from me in the game's current state, but there are definitely some things I'd still like to see addressed, many of which are the same rough spots that I've observed since day 1: It's kind of a given being a randomizer, but game balance is all over the place; I think the enemy shuffler needs more guard rails against super powerful, endgame foes being able to spawn in low level zones, or some sort of scaling / weighting, or something to smooth out the sort of trial and error you experience in just figuring out where is safe to walk Even the basic "legally distinct Dragon Warrior" mode has a lot of balancing nitpicks, however, so it doesn't get a pass just for being a rando - for example, constructs are extremely OP, to the extent that even with the special item which weakens them, they feel much more dangerous than other types of enemies; also the overall power scaling of enemies feels much too dramatic for my preference I wish the music was more interesting; on a first pass, it's fine, but it gets really monotonous after a few runs. With all of the interesting meta-plot stuff going on with loops and alternate timelines and such, I would love to see something similar with the tunes - even just a few variations using the same motifs would be great as a way to reward the player for unlocking more chapters / modes The visuals are fine enough overall, but I don't really like the style of the enemy artwork; while this is highly subjective, it feels a bit too "indie" and unpolished to me; while the somewhat cutesy duck enemy thing is sort of on brand for a DQ inspired game, a lot of the other enemy designs go pretty far into abstract / weird territory (some are legitimately cool, I should add) That all said, there are so many fascinating things going on here, and the price point is so reasonable considering the level of value players can expect, that I would encourage at least giving it a try. For me, the pluses generally outweigh the negatives, and it scratches a very specific itch that I wish more games would try to reach, even if it's a bit inelegant in doing so. 8/10 overall.
This was a really interesting twist on a Dragon Warrior style game. The random equipment that eventually gets introduced really makes combat (especially the bosses) into a kind of puzzle. But the puzzle pieces are randomized, so you get to be a little creative in their assembly. The talent system rewards you for exploring and clearing different monster types. The armor and weapons all level up and unlock new abilities. And, of course, your character levels up and unlocks spells, and upgrades their stats. Also, there's some charms you can but and upgrade 9 times. All of this combined meant the general grind of the game was actually broken up into a series of small goals. Which kept it from ever feeling like a slog. Lots of little accomplishments help keep it feel like things are moving along. It was good, and nostalgic. Highly recommended.
If you like Dragon Quest, you need to play this. The QoL improvements and the randomizer make it feel fresher and more fun than the actual DQ remakes.
Just play the demo. You aren't getting additional value from the paid version. I wish I'd refunded.
