About
In life, you were a legendary hero. Now, you'll rise from the grave as a ghost to defend your country in its hour of greatest need! Defy dragons, duel the dead, and face the nightmare at the bottom of the sea!
Specters of the Deep is an interactive epic fantasy novel by Abigail C. Trevor, author of Heroes of Myth and Stars Arisen. It's entirely text-based, 1 million words and hundreds of choices, without graphics or sound effects, fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.
Centuries ago, you were the finest warrior that the island nation of Galdrin had ever known. The realm was strong and prosperous, upheld by the might of the Eye of the Serpent, a magical artifact bonded to the monarch—and by your might, too. You protected the people and defended the crown; when the dragons emerged from their seclusion, you won the honor of being the king’s emissary to them and forged a powerful alliance.
Then, you fell in battle at the hands of your greatest rival, dead before your time.
But now you awake, called forth from your tomb to save the realm from even greater peril. With your new spectral form come new powers: the ability to pass through solid walls and float high above the earth, command over other ghosts, and the potential to strike fear into the hearts of the living. You will need every bit of that power in this new age of crisis. The royal family is shattered and divided, with the young king clinging to scraps of his former power while his connection to the Eye of the Serpent hangs in the balance. Anti-monarchist rebels shout in the streets and political rivals seek to extend their power across the sea. Galdrin’s neighboring nation lies beneath the waves, sunk by cataclysmic earthquakes. Worst of all, the mighty dragons are withdrawing from the alliance you built centuries ago, and you may be the only one who can win them back.
What’s more, you aren't the only specter on Galdrin's shores. There's an army of ghosts crawling out of the water, tearing at the foundations of the castle. Sometimes, you can hear the voice that commands them. Something is waiting at the bottom of the ocean—and it wants you back.
If Galdrin is to survive, you must rise as its hero once more, and join an epic battle for the Eye of the Serpent, power over the ocean, and the realm itself.
Play as male, female, or nonbinary; gay, straight, bisexual, monogamous, polyamorous, asexual, and/or aromantic
Battle enemies old and new as a ghost, commanding spectral armies and passing invisibly through walls, and inspiring dread in the hearts of your foes.
Romance a troubled king, a rebellious prince, a clever wizard, a daring dragon, or a strangely familiar ghost.
Restore the ancient arcane power of Galdrin’s monarchy, or embrace modernity and forge a new path forward for the realm.
Search for lost treasure and buried secrets in a sunken kingdom as you plunge to the depths of the ocean - and seek out the source of the monstrous voice you hear in your mind.
Build a new body and reclaim a place among the living, or embrace your spectral form to endure as a ghost.
Avenge your own death and find a way to set old enmities aside - or even rekindle old flames of love.
What nightmare lies in the deep?

It is ok, Author is a victim of herself. Good idea, though I think many who start the game are going to be expecting something else based off the description, and starts strong. A fair bit of meandering through concepts, familial drama, etc. Vibe and tone is stuck in a fanfiction type of way that reminds me of a WIP about arthurian legend...as the kids of the main cast in a dragon fairy divorced parent set up (if you read it then you know) Generally pleasent, but I just feel like the delivery lacked in compairison to a lot of the COG HOG content that has been put out.
Great stuff! Choices actually matter, romances get scenes. And my favorite part? The epilogue LASTS.
This story is absolutely terrific, as you would expect from Abigail Trevor if you've read Heroes of Myth and Stars Arisen, both of which are widely and justly considered to be excellent. As to how the plot develops, I'll just say it's really good. As to how the romance options play out, well, I don't really have much to say about most of them. Mainly because when the story starts, very early on, you are asked in a subtle (but not too subtle) way "Hey, do you like enemies-to-lovers?" You're ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ right I do. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⢀⠀⣠⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⢀⠀⣿⡂⢹⡇⠀⠀⣰⠄⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⢸⡇⢸⣇⢸⣇⠀⢀⣿⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠾⠀⠀⣏⠀⡆⠀⠀ ⢸⣷⢸⣇⣸⣇⠀⣾⠏⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⣀⣀⣀⣠⣀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢲⣂⠀⣿⡄⢸⡀⣤ ⢠⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠇⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⣾⣿⣿⣊⡝⠛⠙⠂⠄⠠⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⡀⠀⠄⠀⢀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠈⢿⣦⣼⣷⣼⣁⠼ ⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣀⢀⣀⣀⡀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣰⣿⣿⣿⣿⡻⣥⢋⡔⡀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠂⠁⠀⠄⠀⠠⠀⠂⢀⠀⠐⠈⠀⢀⠠⢀⣀⡀⠘⣿⡟⢿⣿⣿⣄ ⠈⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠿⠋⠉⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣷⢯⣿⣾⡔⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠂⢁⠠⠈⢀⠐⠀⠂⡀⠂⠠⠈⠀⠀⠉⠁⠁⣀⣈⠧⠈⠻⣿⣿ ⠀⣿⣿⣟⢿⠿⠋⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢻⣿⡟⠛⠉⡉⢸⡉⠁⢀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠠⢁⠂⡐⢈⠀⠂⡁⠂⠄⢁⠂⠄⠡⠈⠄⠂⠄⡈⠀⠂⡁⠀⢻⠇ ⠀⣿⣿⣿⡏⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠺⣿⡇⣤⡤⢔⡿⣇⠀⢦⠀⠀⠀⠀⠐⣀⠂⡐⠠⢈⡐⠠⠁⠌⡀⠂⠌⠠⠁⡌⢐⠂⠔⡈⠆⣔⣠⣯⠀ ⠘⡟⣛⠋⠁⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠈⡇⣿⣿⠗⡲⠏⠟⠿⠀⠈⠓⠀⠀⠀⠡⡀⠆⣁⠢⢁⠤⠑⡨⠐⠤⠑⡨⠐⡡⠐⡌⢌⠒⡄⠈⠉⠁⠁⠀ ⠃⡜⡠⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠘⣼⣿⡟⢡⡿⠿⠷⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⠱⣀⠣⢄⠢⡁⢆⠱⢠⠉⢆⠱⣀⠣⡐⠡⢌⠢⡘⠤⡁⠐⠒⠂⠂ ⠐⠐⠁⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠂⠀⠀⢻⠸⣡⢶⣿⣟⡃⠀⠘⠀⠀⢆⠡⢂⡜⢠⠃⡜⢠⢃⠦⣉⠦⡑⢢⡑⠬⡑⡌⢢⢑⠢⠅⠀⠀⡀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⡀⠀⠐⠀⢁⡰⢸⠣⠉⠉⠋⠉⠀⠀⠀⠀⠈⠀⠣⢡⠜⢢⠩⢔⢣⡘⢲⡐⠦⣙⠢⣌⠓⣌⠲⡡⢎⠥⠃⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣰⣶⡶⠆⠁⠠⠁⠊⠐⠁⠈⠠⠄⠂⠉⠈⠖⠀⠀⠒⣶⢦⡁⠂⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠘⠃⠁⠀⠀⠀⠁⠈⠱⢌⠳⣌⠳⣌⢣⡕⢮⡘⡅⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣿⠿⠃⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠂⠀⠀⠏⠈⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠁⠘⡳⢬⠳⡜⢦⡹⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠈⠉⠁⠋⠧⠹⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⠀⠃⢈⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠠⠀⠀⠠⠐⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠓⠂⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢈⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⡀⠀⢀⡀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⢶⠀⡶⣲⠀⣆⡒⣰⠒⢦⢰⠀⢰⡆⣴⠐⣶⠒⣐⣒⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⣠⣴⣺⣿⣿⣿⠛ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠐⠀⠈⡇⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠞⠚⠃⠻⠴⠃⠦⠝⠘⠤⠎⠸⠤⠘⠧⠞⠀⠛⠀⠰⠤⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣼⡟⣾⣿⣿⣿⠃⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⣤⣤⣤⣄⠀⠀⢠⣤⠀⠀⣤⣄⠀⠀⠀⣤⣤⠀⢠⣤⣤⣤⣤⣤⡄⢠⣤⣄⠀⠀⠀⠀⣤⣤⡄⠀⠀⠀⢠⣤⡄⠀⠀⠀⢘⡮⡝⣿⣿⡿⢆⠁⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣰⣿⠏⠉⠉⢿⣷⠀⢸⣿⠀⠠⣿⣿⣧⡀⠀⣿⣿⠀⢸⣿⡏⠉⠉⠉⠁⢼⣿⣿⡄⠀⠀⢸⡿⣿⡇⠀⠀⢀⣿⢻⣷⠀⠀⠀⡞⡜⣹⣿⣿⡙⢆⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⣿⣿⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⠀⠐⣿⡯⢻⣷⡀⣿⣿⠀⢸⣿⣷⣶⣶⡆⠀⢺⣿⠹⣿⡀⢠⣿⠃⣿⡇⠀⠀⣾⡟⠀⢿⣧⠀⠀⢣⠣⢽⣿⣯⡙⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢿⣿⡀⠀⠀⣠⣤⠀⢸⣿⠀⢈⣿⡧⠀⠹⣿⣿⣿⠀⢸⣿⡇⠀⠀⠀⠀⢸⣿⡄⢻⣧⣾⡏⢠⣿⡇⠀⣼⣿⣷⣶⣾⣿⣇⠀⠀⠱⢸⣿⢣⠜⠁⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠈⢿⣿⣶⣾⣿⠏⠀⢸⣿⠀⠀⣿⡷⠀⠀⠹⣿⣿⠀⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡆⢸⣿⡆⠀⢿⡿⠀⢰⣿⡇⢀⣿⡏⠀⠀⠀⢹⣿⡀⠀⢁⢸⡇⠈⡆⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠈⠉⠉⠀⠀⠀⠈⠉⠀⠀⠉⠁⠀⠀⠀⠉⠉⠀⠈⠉⠉⠈⠉⠉⠁⠈⠉⠀⠀⠈⠁⠀⠀⠉⠁⠈⠉⠀⠀⠀⠀⠈⠉⠁⠐⡀⢸⡐⠁⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠁⠀⢘⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀
It has been a bit dry in the choose your own adventure stories here, there have been a few that came out but sadly most have been kinda a let down. I've been dedicated to choice of games, heart's choice, and hosted games for a very long time now and try my very best to keep up with the authors on blogs and websites. It's always a joy to try out stories from newer authors on the scene, but as stated previously, truly a hit or miss. There's the occasional diamond in the rough, not to mention some continuations of a series on the way to look forward to (Jolly Good Tea & Scones, Fallen Hero: Revelations and Wayhaven book 4!!). Spectres of the Deep was one I just so happened to see come up as a new release, I knew the author had written two other stories but I actually never checked them out- that changes today of course. Spectres of the Deep was truly a much needed win for CYOA games, the past few that came out were decent but this one truly takes the cake. I avoid spoilers the best I can when it comes to reviews, so the most I can say is; if you enjoy good world building and complicated characters, not to mention some small twists and sleuthing then you simply must must read. I'm already excited for my next play through and just how different I can truly experience some of the major plot points. --------- tldr; AMAZING story, 10/10 do give it a go. It will certainly be worth the money to get a really well written adventure, also Cecila is everything <3
What is with all the pronoun nonsense. In one of the last chapters of the game we find out the king is a trans woman to man, and the queen mother is a they them. What is the point of shoving all the gender absurdness into it? It really took away from the immersion of the story, I enjoyed the premise and the fantasy aspects of it but when you throw in modern woke politics it's hard to ignore it.
Long, engaging story that starts off very strong. You are The Hero, your country's strongest warrior and champion, who dies in a final flash of glory by your rival. Centuries later, you wake up as a ghost. The premise is very strong. The worldbuilding is also very strong. But the story only goes downhill from here. As other reviewers have mentioned, the author went for a high fantasy world but did not think through all the implications. Worse, the story pacing is mired in countless social fights, it just doesn't feel very epic or heroic. I will still recommend this game because it is fun enough and it falls in the middle quality range of the Choice of Games catalog. But it is a tragic outcome because this game could have been one of the greatest RPG games if the writing had been tighter.
This game really is, for me, the pinacle of interactive novels. It really feels like your choices shape the story in very meaningful ways. Also how to not mention all of the plottwists ??? They were all really unexpected and had me the edge of my seat. The romances are also so very well done and feel very lively (Of course I rushed for the dragon). The game also doesnt feel rushed at all, mainly because it's their longest game yet if I recall, everything feels very polished and thorough and you finish the game with absolutely no loose ends if you wish so. In conclusion, in you are wondering if you should get this game or not : Do not hesitate, this is truly a great game and also a wonderful entry to the genre of interactive novels in my opinion !
Okay, this game was probably one of the best surprises I had with IF games for a long long time. I'm really glad I gave it a chance, because it wasn't a winning bet with me. Not only I'm always more wary with Choice of Games base line (as opposed to Hosted Games and Heart's Choice) because they tend to be more stat focused, but also as opposed to a lot of other reviewers, I genuinely hated "Heroes of Might" and I dropped "Stars Arisen" because I couldn't get into it, so my previous experiences with the author have been less than stellar to say the least, and I concluded their works were just not my style. So my advise would be to not necessarily expect the same thing from "Specters of the Deep" than from the other two games. I will be honest here - this is a game that's clearly on my top 10 or maybe even top 5 IFs, and it's not recency talk bias talking as I'm not very subjected to it to begin with. The storytelling, the setting, the pacing, the characters... everything was absolutely incredible! And the romance... it's been so SO long since I've been THAT happy with a romance in an IF. I picked Frey, which was a surprise since based on the game's description he was the one character I wasn't really interested in. But a single scene with him in the game itself, and I was hooked. He will remain among my top favorite LIs/ROs in any game for a long time, that's for sure. I'm honestly surprised, based on player achievements, that he wasn't picked by more people than that. With that being said, I think it's worth noting - and I'm saying this as a full on positive - this game is a true power fantasy. The MC is a Hero with a capital H, the stuff of legends, and they're only becoming more and more of it. Way more so than their rival could ever attain, despite how things ended between them prior to the time skip. But what also contributes to the power fantasy feeling is the fact the game is easy as long as you're consistent with your decisions. Consequences of choices are clear when it comes to which stat(s) will be checked or increased most of the times, and the skill checks never become absurdly high. Especially considering this game does something I dearly wish more IFs did: doing a lot of combined-stat checks. What that means is that instead of you being tested on a single stat, usually the checks are a combination of an attribute/relationship/alliance and a personality stat, with the total amount having to reach a certain number. And even when it's a single-stat check, usually the difficulty of said check fluctuates based on circumstances. Meaning you'll never truly find yourself softlocked in a fail situation, and even with a pretty low attribute you can still succeed in a check by making it up with sheer personality strength or thanks to your bond with the character doing it with you and so on. It's an incredibly satisfying approach to checks, and one that allows to really make an incredibly powerful character while translating it well into gameplay. Now obviously, for people who don't like power fantasy works or prefer underdog MCs, it may be disruptive. But then again, it may not be the game for you in that case to begin with, considering the whole concept of the MC. All in all, this is only rambling as I don't have anything negative to say about this game at all. I just suggest you play it! Unless you don't like power fantasy, you will most likely enjoy it!
The beginning of Spectres of the Deep was more than impressive; I found myself hooked at the very first sentences. I was sure the story would decline afterwards, but that wasn't the case at all. While there were often political and social challenges instead of battles, it never got boring or slowed down. I felt very comfortable in the protagonist's role. For my very first playthrough, I decided to portray a loyal defender of the crown and it not only worked, but it also felt very natural. I see two minor weaknesses: some of the supporting characters are rather bland, and one of the romance options feels forced on the player. I see why this has been done but I would’ve loved to put more distance between the character I play and this one special npc. Especially when choosing someone else and also [insert spoilers here]. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author!
Another great game from Abigail! Huge Ceci fan! A setting that gets deeper and more interesting with each story, great characters, really weighty choices, it's all really good. Looking forward to more, highly recommend!
