A tough shell with a sweet reward. The story and ideas it has to offer are great, and its art-style also gives it a particular charm. However, given that the game has very few hints, and even those are very inconspicuous, it can be quite hard and even frustrating to progress. Its very small popularity doesn't help either, meaning there's not much help that can be found online if you're stuck. Its difficulty, mostly affected by the aforementioned problematic, doesn't welcome you warmly either. As of writing this review, I have about 6 hours of gameplay. My save file however... 1 hour and a couple of minutes. I consider myself a quite dumb person, but I feel like the majority of people, who'll try to finish the game, exploring all it has to offer, will likewise have a hefty number of hours spent on one particular thing: trial and repeat. As I've said before, the game offers minimum guidance, which means you'll have to figure things out by yourself, again... and again... and again... Something worth mentioning... I haven't started my playthrough on very good terms with this game. I got soft-locked in the early 10 minutes or so of gameplay. For those having the same issue: In the museum, before you interact with the sleeping teacher, make sure you go to the bathroom to talk to a girl there. Otherwise, you'll get soft-locked. This can be tricky, because when you enter the museum for the first time, the bathroom is empty, so you might not think to return there later. Big shoutout to blue velvet rose, without them, I would have given up on the game from the very beginning. Other than this, I have encountered zero issues whatsoever.

The term "hidden gem" gets thrown around *a lot* these days (Breath of the Wild, really?!) but this is one of the very, VERY few games I've ever found that actually meet that description. It's a solid game on it's own, but also the very clear love from the developer and the charm that comes from that simply elevate it. Keep in mind: if you like indie-puzzle-horror, this will be an 12/10 for you. However, if you DON'T like that genre, you'll probably feel it's charm is the only thing it has going for it.
-- Fantastic story, challenging escape sequences, brilliant soundtrack and unique art style. A perfect mix for one of the greatest rpg horrors.
Getting the positives out of the way first. The graphics are nice, the highlight definitely being the creature designs which are cool. The saving system is also surprisingly complex for what the game is. It is accomplished by finding crosses. As you desperately try to stay alive looking for that next save point you'll learn to keep your eye out for not just cross statues but also drawings of crosses. While I liked this mechanic, I also wish it would've been iterated upon a bit more. As soon as the mechanic becomes interesting you are granted access to a cross pendant which lets you save the game anywhere and to compensate the game starts throwing instant death traps soon after. As something of interest, certain moments sometimes have two solutions like escaping the museum at the beginning. You may end up looking for help and come to the conclusion you bricked your save by not witnessing a delinquent girl punching the wall of the girls' toilet which knocks a ventilation fan down (yes, really) while missing out on a more interesting alternate solution. Discovering these options does make repeat playthroughs more interesting but it is also quite unlikely you realize their existence after finding one solution. On a related note, there's a missable key you can grab which grants access to an elaborate side area. Going through it from what I can tell serves no actual purpose story or ending wise but still manages to be an interesting experience if you happened to miss it on your first playthrough. The way the endings branch out is very questionable. There are many instances you are given dialogue choices but none actually affect the ending and the one thing that does makes no sense at all and does not justify itself in any way. I also got stuck trying to find a passcode and giving up after 15 minutes only to find out there is no place to find it in the game. You have to be familiar with important dates of Japan's war history. The story was nice and had some touching moments but I also felt like certain things could've been elaborated upon more and was left a bit unsatisfied. The nice looking character portraits made me wish there were CGs, which could have made certain moments more impactful and memorable. There were also a few typos in the English localization which I would normally give a pass for but considering the quite small script of the game, it being sold for 5.99 and never having been updated to correct them is rather unacceptable to me. Overall, MEMENTO is one of those games where I wish Steam had some neutral option besides a straight up "yes" or "no" when it comes to recommendations. It is a game with interesting ideas but also some questionable design choices. People not used to RPG Maker games are likely to have a rough time but if you have the patience, there might be something of interest here.

Recuerdos Bonitos vs. Trauma Pixelado
🤐 ❌ 😵 “Difícil” + supervivencia terrorífica: si no te gusta repetir/administrar recursos, te va a raspar. 🔪
Tabla de Evaluación

[th]Aspecto[/th][th]Puntuación (0-10)[/th][th]Comentario[/th]
