Bugs and boring.
I'd like to recommend this game, but I can't. The graphics are nice, but the default difficulty is unforgiving of mistakes in any capacity and making money from anything is difficult at best, a veritable nightmare at worst. Gamebreaking bugs have cost me one playthrough already, and four bomb-happy encounters in a row cut another before I even left the first sector. To the devs: Please fix your game!
developers have abandoned the game and if you play with any ship but the starter ship the bugs in the game will ruin any play throughs you have to the point of it not being fun anymore
It's a fine game, till it's not. 10 hours in and the enemy ship bugged out and merged with mine. Couldn't target it so I quit out to restart and now its frozen whenever I load. Should've been bug tested more, but now its a dead game so no updates or bug patches. Save your money for FTL.
Análise.
I liked FTL but wasn't very fond of the whole "being chased through the universe" thing. You were constantly under pressure to move on and improve instead of being able to explore the universe at your own pace. Space rogue allows for just that and that's why I love it.
It's literally FTL with a graphics overhaul and mild story changes. If you haven't played FTL, play that instead. If you have and want that, except more please and with better graphics then this is fine. Seriously, though, it's almost a direct copy/paste of about 90% of that game's mechanics.
Summary: FTL but not as good Multiplayer: No Completion: 4 hrs first campaign, 14 hrs for all four Cards: Yes | Cloud: No Save Location: \Users\_USERNAME_\AppData\LocalLow\Red Beat LTD\Space Rogue The first thing anyone will think of when they see Space Rogue is FTL with 3D models. While in some ways it is the same, in many ways it's not. Space Rogue is a real time 1v1 ship combat game with tactical pauses to allow for precise decision making. Outside of combat, random events are handled with prompts where you determine the outcome. If you've played FTL, most of this will seem familiar. There are four campaigns with somewhat different goals. Initially you may only play one campaign, but more are unlocked automatically as you gain levels. While there's no fleet pursuing you from system to system, you have a (optionally) limited number of turns to reach your goal. There are some major differences between this an FTL. For one, you do not need to manage power at all. There are no airlocks or locked doors. Shields do not block a single hit and instead function like temporary HP. Arguably the best feature is the customization of various gameplay aspects at the cost of experience rate. The graphics are a mixed bag. The models are fine, but the 2D aesthetic of FTL is much easier to navigate on top of looking better. In Space Rogue, it is difficult to see what weapons were fired, and where they hit. Furthermore, it's hard to quickly determine which systems are damaged, and what state of repair they are in. The music is nice and chill, but nothing I'd put in my playlist. The game does have a number of bugs, and the forum is happy to tell all about them. I rate Space Rogue a B-. I had fun with it, but it could use some more time in the oven to weed out the various bugs and improve the UI. If you have to choose between this and FTL, FTL wins every time. But if you're burnt out on FTL and want something vaguely similar, this isn't a bad way to go.
not to be confused with the 1989 game of the same name, this is an ftl clone with really nice graphics and music, though not as good as ben prunty's ftl soundtrack. same gameplay of jumping through nodes, encountering random events, fighting ships in pausable real-time combat, etc. unlike ftl, where you have to cross your fingers, do a rain dance and sacrifice a goat to maybe pull off a ship unlock through random happenings, here all you need is perseverance. leveling up over multiple runs unlocks more campaigns, still with randomized galaxies (4 total, 1 available in the beginning), starting ships, perks and difficulty settings. less resource management and the exclusion of a pursuing threat and time limit are welcome changes in my book. random everything ♥♥♥♥♥ you over all time anyway, but at least fuel and ammo are of no concern here and exploration is less limited and stressful. there are still cooldowns on weapons and gadgets but you're not just rushing through everything, though always pushing forward is possible if that's your preference. what I found most frustrating is the inability to target enemies on-board. crew can only be moved and they shoot if there's something in the same room, but if the enemy keeps moving who knows where, it becomes really annoying. medium and hard modes offer greater rewards but even medium is a lot more difficult. on easy I cleared the first 2 missions with ease, on medium I died after a few encounters. custom difficulty lets you tweak pretty much everything from galaxy size to jump limit, damage to rewards and health. on top of upgrading the ship, crew members also level up during runs, increased hp, damage, repair, even specializations, but everything is lost when a run ends, naturally, and if the captain falls, it's game over regardless. mining is another option in certain places (tritanium is the second currency, used for ship upgrades and gadgets) and crew placement can be saved and restored, don't have to reposition them manually over and over. plus giant space monsters on top of various ships, pretty cool. decent amount of settings available anytime, though there's no menu icon, only pressing esc works. resolutions, windowed mode, very separate volumes, rebindable controls, anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering, toggles for depth of field and bloom. handy mouseover tooltips for everything, including system upgrade benefits, and the game autosaves constantly and on exit, and keeps a backup of when a new sector is first entered. interactive tutorial but only highlighted things are clickable. the only thing missing is a ui/text size setting, some of it is a bit small. and a pause/unpause icon to click for 100% mousability, and maybe fast-forward for when you're just waiting for oxygen to replenish. also, no scrollbar on the galaxy map and with multiple active missions, not all the descriptions might be visible. would've been nice if completing a campaign automatically unlocked the next, skipping the grind. doing everything thoroughly and relatively well in the first only landed me on lvl3 and the second mission needs lvl4, then the second left me at lvl6 but mission 3 unlocks at lvl8. due to the nature of the game, every run is pretty much the same with different flavor text but I still wanted to do all the campaigns initially. then I realized how much repetition I would've had to endure to get to the next story bit and decided to move on. still, it's pretty good overall if you like this sort of thing.
Basically a direct clone of FTL with higher graphics and a few twists here and there. I enjoyed FTL a ton and was looking for another option that got close to that style of game play and this matched. I don't think there are any new updates coming anymore for this title, but it's worth a purchase while on sale. *I encountered a single crash in 84 hours, but other than that, it was smooth gameplay with no frame lag or bugs*
