Ah yes, the wonderful Space Ace. Look, you either love these laser disc games or you don't. They are what they are - a memory and agility test. You push up, down, left, right or fire in accordance with the on screen prompt (a flash) and if your timing is right, the cartoon progresses. Simple as that. For me, I associate this game with the summer of 1985, when me and my mates, all around the 14 or 15 year old mark, would get the train to Barry Island on the coast of Wales on a Saturday morning and just spend hours in the wonderful arcades they had there at the time. Games like Space Ace, Dragon's Lair, Out Run, Space Harrier, Double Dragon and others will always be cherished and have a special place in my heart.
A Challenging Sci-fi Adventure from the Mind of Don Bluth
After playing Dragon’s Lair, I thought I’d look at and play another game from filmmaker and animator Don Bluth. While that game was set in a medieval fantasy setting, this game, Space Ace, takes on the sci-fi genre, where we play as the dashing hero, Dexter, who prefers to be called “Ace.” His mission? Stop the villainous Commander Borf from using his Infanto Ray on Earth and save your sidekick Kimberly. Overall, the gameplay is very similar to that of Dragon’s Lair (limited number of lives, quick-time events, using arrow keys or pressing a weapon button, etc.); however, there are a few differences. Firstly, the game features three individual difficulty levels: Cadet (Easy), Captain (Normal), and Ace (Hard). The game also has multiple paths players can take by “energizing” to go on the offensive, attacking enemies instead of running away or staying in his adolescent form as Dexter. It makes the game more interesting, adding challenges for you to overcome. Furthermore, I loved the interactive film aspect, which was similar to the previous one. Let me just say this was a very challenging game compared to the previous one I played. While I did enjoy this title, the learning curve on this was much more significant, and it took longer for me to memorize the events that occurred. I did find myself getting more frustrated with this, which led to me not having too much fun. I was hoping I would have a lot more fun with this, but I couldn’t. It is not a bad game by any means, but it is challenging. However, I do recommend you check this out yourself! Especially if you enjoy old arcade games.
3 out of 5 ★★★☆☆!
This would get the thumbs up... If only there was support for an arcade stick.
Fun FMV game.
Game should be embarrassed that it runs like garbage on many low to mid range systems when it's JUST SHOWING A FREAKING VIDEO AND WAITING FOR QUICK TIME EVENT INPUTS. Game itself was a spectacle back in the arcade but really, it's just a QTE-heavy video so nothing much to see here. Watching a playthrough is about the same experience. If you do have this, look up how to get the old version of the game and play it instead because it will run on basically any system. I know, what a concept. Oh, and if you do have a system capable of playing this: the moves are horribly off and glitchy and do not work half the time. What a mess. GET THE ORIGINAL, PLAY IT WITH DAPHNE.
Sweet version of the original cabinet game!
