A charming adventure in which you progress by solving puzzles, with very light platforming in a couple of spots. The puzzles are good, the mechanics varied, and the art great, so the basics are covered, along with most options you should need for comfort. Character movement is unpolished (sticky feet, invisible walls, need to move away and re-approach to be able to repeat an interaction...,) but somehow it fits the puppet show style and is barely bothersome. Animations and effects add plenty to the natural charm (falls, light bubbles, and many more.) A couple of warnings/advice: - Pick the highest texture quality in the options. At 1 rank below max by default, I couldn't see the first clue in a picture. - Select the highest resolution you can afford, otherwise some texts can be truncated, partially out of screen. - The last section, the castle, becomes glitchy. Following some room transitions, walls were not rendered and I fell through the absent floor into softlocked darkness; multiple times. If that happens to you, quit the game entirely and relaunch. There was no loss, as it always happened right on the newest checkpoint. The one feature that is weak is the classically unsafe, and severely limiting, single-slot auto-save only. The one feature that is truly missing is a chapter selector. Particularly so when finding collectibles is a pure game of chance. Going left before right at a crossing can transfer you to the next section, with no ability to go back and explore the right path. I'n not replaying the entire thing for a few missed pictures. Despite the above, I still give a warm recommendation; Sowon is unequivocally enjoyable.
wonderful art & adorable character game. It's not a scary game. cute! If you like adventure and puzzles you will enjoy it.
SOWON is a quiet, surreal adventure that leans heavily on atmosphere, symbolism, and environmental storytelling rather than explicit exposition or complex mechanics. Developed and published by PUMPKIM, the game invites players into a dreamlike journey that blends childlike wonder with an undercurrent of unease. From the opening moments, it establishes a contemplative tone, asking players not simply to progress from puzzle to puzzle, but to absorb the world and interpret its meaning through visuals, space, and mood. The narrative begins with a simple but emotionally charged premise. A young girl named Sowon wakes in the middle of the night to find her parents missing, and her search leads her into a hidden attic space that becomes a gateway to an unfamiliar toy-filled world. Rather than clearly explaining how or why this transition occurs, the game treats it as a natural extension of a child’s imagination or subconscious fear, immediately setting the stage for a story that unfolds through implication rather than direct storytelling. This approach makes the experience feel personal and introspective, as though the player is wandering through a memory or dream shaped by emotion rather than logic. Gameplay centers on exploration and environmental puzzle-solving in a third-person perspective. Players guide Sowon through interconnected areas filled with strange structures, dolls, and abstract architecture, often without clear objectives or markers. Progress depends on careful observation, experimentation, and a willingness to interpret subtle visual cues. Puzzles are generally integrated into the environment, requiring players to interact with objects, activate mechanisms, or understand spatial relationships rather than solve explicit logic problems. This design reinforces immersion but can also feel opaque, especially for players who prefer clearer guidance or traditional puzzle frameworks. Visually, SOWON stands out through its distinctive art direction. The world resembles a handcrafted toy box, filled with exaggerated shapes, muted pastels, and characters that are equal parts charming and unsettling. The “ugly doll” aesthetic gives the game a unique identity, blurring the line between comforting and eerie in a way that suits its themes. Camera angles are often fixed or subtly guided, prioritizing composition and mood over precise player control. While this can occasionally make navigation feel restrictive, it also enhances the cinematic, storybook quality of the experience. Sound design plays a crucial role in shaping the game’s emotional impact. Music is sparse and atmospheric, often giving way to ambient noise that heightens feelings of isolation and curiosity. There is no voice acting, and dialogue is minimal, which places greater emphasis on visual storytelling and environmental context. This silence can be powerful, allowing players to project their own interpretations onto Sowon’s journey, though it may also leave some feeling disconnected or uncertain about narrative intent. Pacing in SOWON is deliberately slow and reflective. The game rarely pressures the player with time limits or high-stakes challenges, encouraging exploration at a measured pace. This can be deeply rewarding for those who enjoy absorbing environments and piecing together meaning gradually, but it may test the patience of players looking for constant engagement or mechanical escalation. Occasional technical roughness, such as imprecise controls or unclear interactions, reminds players of the game’s indie scale, though these issues rarely overshadow its core strengths. Overall, SOWON is best approached as an atmospheric journey rather than a traditional adventure game. Its strengths lie in mood, visual identity, and its willingness to tell a story through suggestion rather than explanation. While its abstract puzzles and restrained narrative may not resonate with everyone, it offers a memorable experience for players who appreciate contemplative indie games that prioritize emotion, symbolism, and imagination over clarity and spectacle. Rating: 8/10
