The rewind mechanic saved you from a LOT of BS and tedium in previous games. Getting rid of it makes the game an absolute slog. To get the best ending, you have to spend some time in a permadeath-esque state, where you can either rewind to the point where you went into this state and lose your chance at the best ending, or start completely over. If enough of the aforementioned BS happens between starting permadeath and the final stretch of the game, you have to start the game over. That stretch of time between CAN be fairly short, but there are a lot of potential combat encounters and other opportunities to die even if you make a beeline. I really liked the last 3 games, but it's honestly kind of impressive how removing a single mechanic makes the game so irritating to play.
just an awful ending to a fun story , their was 0 need to over complicate things. sending players back and hour because they are not allowed to save is not fun
Finished NBAS route and rejected thrombin's curse for search of a better ending. Not allowing us to rewind time within the walls has made the game difficult in a way that's just plain unfun for casual players. Now just rage quitting this game after hours of careful gameplay has gone down the gutter due to me losing my spell casting ability from a disease (seriously???)
Honestly, it's a complete slog. It's literally designed with the intention of forcing you to replay the same part over and over. What's more the game is rife with instant death traps, designed to ruin your play through. This is the worst kind of "gameplay" I can imagine. I almost completed it, but then I realised, why am I torturing myself? The positive reviews are surely from walkthrough users.
Love the series (and inkle) to death. But I do not know what madness possessed Jon Ingold & company to remove the rewinding mechanic in Sorcery! Part 4. If you want to "change things up" or "make it tougher", then make it OPTIONAL. Don't EVER introduce grinding and boring repetition to a series that already had nailed its gameplay loop across THREE freaking games. Part 4 nowadays I just beeline. Through Throg's Larder, then the beggar woman by the central well (daytime), then kill the a*sholes in the eastern plaza (2nd visit), then back to beggar woman, then go collect the spells for the Potion of Magical Dissolution (might take a little while to visit the 3 towers), then straight north to Citadel, then GOD/KID to get past, then to Throben Doors to cast DOC, FAL, TEL, RES, then climb up to cast DIM, NAP and YAZ on Flanker. Voi a la, game's finished and THEN you can rewind ONCE to mess around with all the items and equipment you had. Real brilliance of this series is in Parts 1, 2, 3 and the first 20% of Part 4 where rewinding is allowed. Such a shame neither inkle nor modders managed to unshackle its grandest game from its greatest nemesis: utter boredom.
The devs ended the series out on a hard note. The first and second game served as an introduction to the genre, the third game showed the players how the devs had mastered it, and this one is for the player to show the game how they've mastered it. The most important change to this game is that halfway through they remove the rewind mechanic a lot of players have depended on for a while. Some are bitter, and may call this cheap. Believe what you want about it, but the game WILL be hard, and WILL require you to restart the run a couple of times if you mess up somewhere. Getting the best ending possible will take plenty of effort. Buy this game expecting it to be a jarring change in difficulty, because it will be.
The removal of being able to undo your actions does make it more tedious to find the right solutions. But if you're the type of person who is willing to take the time to find the right way in, it's for you. (Also note that it is still possible to undo, you just have to undo all the way back to when you first enter Mampang) I'll give some advice which can save some time, but I'll keep spoilers minimal. You will need to learn some things (I don't just mean the Analander getting a clue, it also means you as the player should be taking notes over multiple resets):
1. Learn how to get to the Throben Doors, and learn how to open it, OR learn a way to get into the castle ignoring the Throben Doors altogether. 2. Learn how to counter the effects of the Crown of Kings. 3. Learn how to store the counters to the Crown of Kings. 4. Optional, if you want a "good ending": try to break Throben's curse (one method involves actions in Part 3). There are some guides saying it's possible to avoid it altogether but I've tried and they never work, don't bother trying to avoid it, try removing it afterwards instead. If you win the game you are granted a 1-time undo, so it's okay to finish the game with the Curse, then try to remove it.
