Really enjoyable, hit me with a lot of nostalgia, back when Flash games were still alive. Very unique art style, fluid and dynamic OST, usually lackluster VA but for its time, and nonexistent budget, it's normal and expected. The story was definitely weak and most of which is left open-ended but for this 'franchise' it is trivial and superficial. The balance is something that reminds me of WoW Vanilla talent tree system where there was only 1 or 2 builds that actually worked and was meta whilst everything else was a gimmick for when you had nothing better to do, the premise is exactly the same here for the talent trees although maybe more bizarre in how some skills are unlocked. Sometimes you simply had to click on certain abilities just to see if you can actually unlock it or if something was missing, perhaps I missed something in that regard? The biggest issue is definitely Heroic mode/Legend run in Sonny 2 where every fight is over tuned and you end up needing to shut the game off if you didn't get the drop you wanted which would make the run significantly more pleasant and in some cases actually mathematically beatable. I do believe it is possible to soft lock yourself if you respec too often and do not get enough good drops for the run. This is definitely a big oversight. Overall, this is a very amusing TBRPG that has a soft spot in my heart. In a sea of awful AAA games and other disappointing turn-based RPGs this is more enjoyable and replayable than modern games which clearly shows the decline of good video game development and design. We didn't know how good we had it. This legendary series from the days of Flash games has aged like fine wine even when taking into account the shortcomings of the games. Side note : Works flawlessly on Proton 11 beta.
I've played Sonny and Sonny 2 many many years ago, one thing that has to be mentioned is that both of these flash games are still available to play for free in your browser on armorgames.com. The Steam version removed the option to pick the german (text)language and didn't fix typo's or any of the audio bugs from Sonny 2, they changed the "daily respec" in the first Sonny to not be daily anymore as far as i can tell, the same was probably done to the daily post game money grind, all in all you're not getting a better version by buying it here. The story of these games aged well, the cutscenes in Sonny 2 look absolutely amazing even with the severe lack of detail on characters and environment, the music still slaps (ty David Orr <3), everything else aged less well. If you want to donate to what i assume is still the original developers you can buy it, everyone else might want to play it on their browser before considereing to buy.
These games have aged pretty well. Despite from where they come from and being created as flash games they're worth their price. A game easy to pick up but fun to make builds in. The OST by David Orr is still a banger, I still listen it to nowadays, epic and tense music. And the story alongside the world, I still love them, how we follow Sonny as he discovers this world, he starts almost with the same knowledge as us as we explore it together. I'm even sad we hadn't had more entries in this franchise.
This game ages like a fine wine.. peak flash game era. if i could go back in time to change anything that would be to convince somehow the developer to make Sonny 3.. i still love it and will love the game forever.
Fuego.
I always loved these games, but I avoided playing on the hardest difficulty as a kid, just like every game. I was hoping revisiting it now would be like when I revisited Epic Battle Fantasy and played that on the highest difficulty. It actually rewarded you for engaging with every mechanic and understanding resistances and immunities when building gear. This was nothing like that, because all the high difficulty achievements come with the restriction of not redoing fights or training, instead punishing you for engaging with every mechanic. The game is not balanced around playing it like this, you either read a guide and do everything it says (and still have to rely on RNG) or go without and die again and again and again in the next story fight because your teammate refuses to heal and doesn't understand that they need focus to do so. Your victories playing this way will be unearned, because the enemy AI is as braindead as your teammates', it'll only take a dozen attempts to get one lucky roll where the superboss just decides not to heal itself and give you a pity win. And even if you do everything the way the game wants you to you still won't even win because the game will just decide to not give you these already difficult achievements for no reason. If swf files, external players and newgrounds scare you, by all means buy the game this way. If not, or if you care about achievements at all, just go play them in their original form, because this collection only adds a menu where you pick between the two games, aside from that it's exactly the same.
Here lies history
