Son of Scoregasm is an unapologetically arcade-focused twin-stick shooter that embraces speed, spectacle, and score chasing above all else. Developed by R C Knight and published by Charlie's Games, the title builds upon the foundations of its predecessor while delivering a more refined and content-rich experience. It captures the spirit of classic arcade shooters where survival, quick reflexes, and mastery of mechanics are more important than narrative depth. The result is a game that feels both nostalgic and modern, appealing to players who enjoy pure action without unnecessary distractions. The core gameplay revolves around navigating intense battlefields filled with enemy swarms, deadly projectiles, environmental hazards, and giant boss encounters. Controls are simple to learn but difficult to master, allowing players to move freely while firing in any direction. This accessibility makes the game immediately enjoyable, yet its escalating difficulty ensures that experienced players will constantly be challenged. Every level introduces new threats and enemy patterns, encouraging players to stay alert and adapt quickly rather than relying on a single strategy. One of the game's strongest features is its variety. The campaign spans numerous stages spread across colorful and imaginative locations, each featuring unique visual themes and gameplay twists. Rather than feeling repetitive, the progression introduces new mechanics, enemy formations, and hazards at a steady pace. Large-scale boss battles serve as memorable highlights, often requiring players to learn attack patterns while managing the chaos unfolding across the screen. These encounters provide a satisfying test of skill and help break up the flow of standard combat sections. The scoring system is at the heart of the experience. Like the best arcade games, Son of Scoregasm constantly pushes players to improve their performance and chase higher rankings. Combos, efficient enemy elimination, and risk-versus-reward decisions all contribute to achieving impressive scores. This emphasis on replayability significantly extends the game's lifespan, as players are encouraged to revisit levels repeatedly in pursuit of better results. The leaderboard-driven design creates a competitive atmosphere even when playing alone. Visually, the game embraces a vibrant and energetic aesthetic. Bright colors, explosive effects, and detailed enemy designs make every stage visually engaging. Despite the sheer amount of action occurring simultaneously, the presentation remains readable enough for skilled players to react appropriately. The visual style does not aim for realism; instead, it focuses on delivering a fun arcade spectacle that complements the frantic gameplay. Explosions, laser fire, and enemy destruction fill the screen with constant motion, creating a satisfying sense of intensity. The audio design supports the action effectively. Fast-paced music keeps the adrenaline high throughout each mission, while weapon effects and explosions provide satisfying feedback during combat. The soundtrack helps maintain momentum and contributes to the game's energetic atmosphere. Although the audio may not be particularly groundbreaking, it succeeds in enhancing the arcade experience and reinforcing the sense of urgency during difficult encounters. Another notable strength is the game's sense of humor and lighthearted tone. The premise involving the recovery of stolen royal biscuits and the absurd threats facing the galaxy gives the adventure a playful personality. The game never takes itself too seriously, allowing its over-the-top action and quirky concepts to remain entertaining throughout the campaign. This humorous approach helps distinguish it from more serious shooters in the genre. The game's biggest limitation is that its arcade-focused design may not appeal to everyone. Players seeking deep storytelling, character development, or progression systems may find the experience somewhat straightforward. Its emphasis on reflexes and score optimization also means that newcomers to the genre could encounter a steep challenge curve during later stages. However, these aspects are largely intentional and align with the design philosophy of classic arcade shooters. Overall, Son of Scoregasm is a highly enjoyable twin-stick shooter that succeeds by focusing on what arcade action games do best: fast gameplay, memorable boss fights, rewarding score systems, and endless replay value. It delivers a polished and energetic experience packed with variety, challenge, and personality. Fans of arcade shooters, bullet-heavy combat, and leaderboard competition will find plenty to appreciate, while casual players can still enjoy its accessible controls and entertaining presentation. It stands as a worthy successor to Scoregasm and a strong example of modern arcade game design. Rating: 7/10
A shmup in the vain of Geometry Wars, but the next logical leap in score chasing advancement. Map diversity is great and the combo/score mechanics add tons of replay value and leaderboard envy. Highly recommend! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjF0We2jObQ
Quite cool, but waaaay to hard :( Runs well on Linux and steam controller support is also nice.
A purist twin-stick shooter: each level challenges you to survive and to obtain maximum points. The game gets too hard, too fast, and provides little content for the price. The first ten levels were okay, with some variety of minute-long levels to repeat. They could be finished eventually with luck and practice. But, within a short time, I was stuck doing them over and over. This is a tough-as-nails game with no handicaps like powerups and equipment drops, so there is no way to continue. So that is not enough game content to justify paying for the game. And there were technical issues, on ubuntu linux. There was a reported issue of the game continuing to run after quitting, which never got fixed. And now, the game fails to launch, even though steam thinks that it is running. It is unplayable. I kept it running for trading cards, but I probably got less than an hour of game time, in total.
I love this game. The difficulty level is off the charts, but its tricky! Should also definitely get is predecessor Scoregasm as well!
Son of a good shooter !
Geometry Wars-ish shoot-em-up where you have to balance killing enemies with your area pulse for multiplier, or with bullets for points.
I've already played a bunch of the Vita version of this, but really glad to be able to play with a full size pad and a bigger screen. This is a first class twin stick shooter with a really excellent risk/reward combo-based game mechanic. Looks fantastic, even on my Macbook Pro with a relatively modest onboard graphics card. If you're a fan of score attack shooters - think Jeff Minter or Housemarque's games - then this is a must. Huge recommendation.
