Short review: A decent, if perhaps mostly too easy, Sokoban-style game. Although it resembles Stephen's Sausage Roll, it's quite different. Long review: In a puzzle game like this, gameplay is essentially the only thing that matters (to me). So, I'll get the other stuff out of the way first. The graphics are polished and look good; the game is aesthetically quite pleasing. The writing is not at all to my taste; most of the jokes fall flat to me, but they're short and easy enough to ignore, so they don't detract from the experience for me. The interface is pretty unpleasant to use at times; I'd love keyboard shortcuts, for instance, but I admit it's not totally obvious to me how you'd implement that with the complexity of the moves. But the overall polish of the game is mostly there. Now, the gameplay. This is a Sokoban-style game. The most obvious comparisons are games like Stephen's Sausage Roll, Snakebird, English Country Tune, A Good Snowman is Hard to Build, Sokobond, etc. Campfire Cooking is overwhelmingly easier than all other Sokoban-style games I've ever played. If SSR is a 10 on a 1-10 difficulty scale, then Campfire Cooking is probably about a 3 or a 4. Most of Campfire Cooking -- as in, almost the entire first half of the game, and around 80% of the game overall -- can fairly be described as a tutorial. Mechanics are introduced slowly, and the ways in which they layer are slowly explored. The pace is too slow for my taste, but I'm biased as both somewhat experienced in the genre *and* an afficionado for hard puzzle games. Sokoban games, when done well, have a certain feel. There are two common themes among what I regard to the best of this genre: (1) A requirement that you have a "key idea" before completing a level, and (2) the following reaction: "Hey this puzzle looks easy! All I have to do is... wait, I'm one square short, never mind, it's impossible." For (1), you can tell when a good puzzle has this if, after beating a level, it is trivially easy to go back and immediately beat it in a short amount of time. Instead, most of the Campfire Cooking levels are just easy. You might envision a solution immediately, and instead of being one square short, it works. This changes later in the game. A few levels of Campfire Cooking, particularly in the latter half of the game (and four of the five final levels) are worth the price of the game alone, because they do have that excellent je ne sais quoi of the Sokoban genre. But many of the levels in Campfire Cooking feel like filler, which is a quality that truly excellent puzzle games (e.g. Stephen's Sausage Roll, Snakebird, Braid, Portal, etc.) do not have. Aside from being too easy, the mechanics of Campfire Cooking are actually interesting. Yes, cooking two sides of something that rolls is borrowed from Stephen's Sausage Roll, but the stick isn't, nor is the rotation of the stick, or the other various mechanics that I won't spoil for the uninitiated. The two games do not feel anything alike in execution. Campfire Cooking does layer its mechanics together in a good way to obtain complex and novel interactions, and I feel like the design space was reasonably well-explored. It's a decent game that is worth your time, but it's not among the best of the best in the genre. That said, if you ragequit Stephen's Sausage Roll because it was too hard, but generally liked the concept, then this is probably a good game for you. Or, if you like the genre and don't hate the idea of a game that won't necessarily challenge you on every puzzle, this is worth picking up. And even if you do prefer those hard challenges, they *are* there -- you just have to wade through some other stuff to get to them.
Raffiniert in Szene gesetzter Denksport, inklusive Outdoor-Feeling! Macht Laune! :) Danke an den Entwickler :)
If Stephen's Sausage Roll were a kid's game that didn't hate you so much. I don't mean that statement to reflect in a bad way on either game. I like me a good easy puzzle game, and this is a good easy puzzle game. 8/10, charming graphics, great music, sometimes the difficulty curve is a little drunk even when working with already-tutorialized mechanics. Cooked to perfection!
EDIT: For that one possible person that might ever check this review, disregard anything I've said. The game becomes so insanely difficult and mind-bending that it's impossible for me to get anywhere. If you locked me up for a year, maybe, maybe I could get to the end, fortunately, I am not in such predicament. The developer couldn't properly balance the difficulty.
Cozy little puzzle game
I've played plenty of Sokoban, and I don't know if this could be considered a spin to that formula, but it's certainly a good one, and well utilized. With nice, relaxing atmosphere, this game is so easy to pick up and play, it's a shame that I feel like a time traveler, because last reviews are from 6 years ago, shame this game never got the attention it deserved. Initially, it annoyed me, but eventually, I guess it clicked with me and I was able to chew my way through most of it - while some puzzles were far more difficult than others, it seemed mostly fair, it never gets too complex and overwhelming, and you'll get plenty of "Aha!" kind of moments, or if you're like me, you will also get plenty of impotent rage ones, but that's all part of the fun, I suppose. The only complaint really is how insanely inconsistent the difficulty is - you will have a mindbendingly difficult puzzle, which is then followed by one that is solved in couple of seconds. What gives?! Game continues changing and evolving as you progress, with tutorials that always properly explain how things work. I was able to jump in after a month long break, which is very nice, as not every game is can be instantly picked up and played, if you forgot the controls or game logic. There is a decent amount of content and for the price, if you like simple puzzle games, it's a steal.
