There is no need to be concerned. You're in a safe place with this game! Just please don't leave me alone after this! I need to know I'm still human!!! Genuinely such a perfect Psychological Horror game.
incredible
After reading the reviews and being a long‑time fan of horror games, I figured SOMA would be right up my alley. I don’t mind slower, narrative‑focused games, but SOMA’s gameplay often worked against its own excellent story, making it harder for the narrative to land the way it should have. Unfortunately, I walked away really disappointed. The story is fantastic — the only thing that kept me going after the first 15 minutes — but everything surrounding it fell flat for me. The pacing is artificially slow in many aspects. Ladder climbing, underwater movement, door cycling, water‑draining sequences, carrying *an important late-game item*, even basic traversal all feel deliberately dragged out just to stretch a short narrative into a much longer runtime. On top of that, direction is often unclear, leading to running back and forth through the same rooms multiple times looking for tiny interactables. You can open nearly every drawer, locker, and cabinet in the game, but almost none of it serves any purpose. Yes, you can pick up almost everything — but you only ever use that ability twice.. The rest is just empty interactivity meant to look deep but adds nothing. Gameplay is nearly nonexistent. The monsters don’t add tension; they add downtime. Most encounters boil down to crouching in a corner for several minutes waiting for a patrol to pass, or simply sprinting past them because they pose little real threat. It felt like they exist to slow you down, not to challenge you. The puzzles are basic, usually amounting to “press buttons until the lights turn green.” They require little thought, and feel more like speed bumps than actual problem‑solving. Level design is repetitive, with the majority of the game taking place in same‑looking underwater environments. There’s very little visual or mechanical variety to keep you engaged. Combine all of this with the fact that your choices have zero impact on the story, and the experience becomes pretty underwhelming. Calling this a masterpiece feels misleading. The existential themes and core narrative are excellent, but the execution around them didn't hit. I love the vision, the concept, and the potential — but the gameplay just didn’t deliver for me. I genuinely respect the story and the ideas the developers were exploring, yet I don’t feel the “game” itself lived up to that ambition. The experience often felt like it lacked purpose; I found myself asking “is this over yet?” instead of hoping it wouldn’t end.
I had to put down the game for several months because I was too scared to keep playing. The way the story slowly unfolds is super engaging. It does the best thing sci-fi can do. It makes you reflect on what it means to be human by introducing a creepy technology and using it to explore uncharted moral territory.
