Think you are skilled at retro-style platforming games? Well, then this game will be a serious challenge. Casual players please stay away, this is not a game for you. The game looks and feels like the traditional Donkey Kong arcade game, though the difficult makes even the first stage extremely difficult. I felt like a 4-year-old child unable to complete anything in the original Super Mario Bros when I picked it up for the first time. Although I feel like my learning and progression in that was faster than my current experience with Slingshot. To give you a small idea (very small sample due to my inability to progress) of the game, here's a video of my initial look into this game, with nothing but failures to show in the very first stage. https://youtu.be/teNXBc2TQfY
Controls
Controller works really well, and is what I played with. Keyboard also works. There are very very controlled actions, just like in traditional platforming games, and the ideas are very easy to learn. Execution and progression, on the other hand, are littered with moments of frustration due to sheer difficulty.
Graphics and Music
Retro-style graphics, with a pretty nice first level soundtrack that is rather befitting. Nothing terribly exciting but feels like an old-school arcade game. (I cannot comment on the other audio tracks because I came nowhere close to completing the first tower.)
Audience
Hardcore retro-style platformer enthusiasts only. Even then, it seems a bit on the more difficult side.
Pricing
Base price of $5.99 USD is hard for me to comment on. Since I have no idea what the whole game looks like. But from what I can see, it's definitely worth it to the right crowd.
Positives
+Nice use of the retro style +Fun for the right players +Engaging developer in forums +Achievements for completing towers
Negatives
-Way too difficult, even if the difficulty was lowered after the initial release. -Displayed in a narrow and tall window with a lot of negative space on screen.
Conclusion
Slingshot Explorer: The Twelve Towers is a very challenging experience with simple controls molded into a retro-platforming style that can be fun and worthwhile for the right crowd. I have to warn all casual players to steer clear of this title. Recommended for the hardcore platforming enthusiasts looking for a challenge.
I received the product for free.
Details

Bring your coins: this retro-platformer is a bad habit you won't want to quit.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/937120 Slingshot explorer has taken a simple goal and built a solid arcade platformer around it: the enemies are not too-varied, but some need to be killed with shots you have to charge-up first by holding the fire button adds a surprising level of depth. It is very difficult, but it does capture the essence of how games really were in the arcades about 35 years ago...

Summary

A nice little curio of a game that rewards as well as punishes... recommended.
Pros: - a lot of moving obstacles - a really good, involving challenge - feels like a 1983 arcade platformer: vertical display, rules on intro page, simple tune: nailed it! Cons: - too many variables, to much randomness to learn the levels - an enormously difficult game that may exclude a lot of gamers - a bit too bare-bones: lacks variety - a little too expensive for what it delivers https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1748250279

See Also...
https://store.steampowered.com/app/444000
All boyflea reviews can be found at Good Indie Free Game Reviews

Erstmal: Ich liebe solche Plattformer!
👑 Powered by HoI 4 Deu Curators group in German / English 👑⠀⠀⠀

Follow Main group
Follow Second group
and discover more reviews from me
This game is unbelievably and unnecessarily hard to the point that it kills any ambition you might have had. It's unfortunate because this could have been a neat new classic arcade style game and feels like it should be but the difficulty level and design mistakes really hold it back. You have to collect 20 coins, I assume per level but I've never made it past the 1st level. The coins will appear one at a time when you are playing and after you grab a coin, the next will appear randomly elsewhere in the level. The problem is you have no idea if it is going to appear above or below you and it's possible that it materializes completely out of sight which forces you to go on a suicide mission with a 50% chance of you going entirely the wrong way. It just feels wrong having to go up and then back down and then back up over and over, especially since you have to use the ladders can can't jump down like how you can hold down and jump in many games. While I don't like having to go back down it should at the very least only spawn the coins within sight and maximum of 2 or so floors away. Also there should be an indicator somewhere to alert the player that the next coin is above or below and it should show you in a way where the player doesn't have to take their eyes off their character to scan the level, it should be blatantly clear and obvious immediately after grabbing a coin which way the next one is. The number of enemies and obstacles is very high and can be frustrating, some will drop from above and some will go side to side either on the top or bottom lane of each floor. You have a slingshot for self defense but some of the enemies can't be killed while others can. There is no indication of why, you just have to try it and find out for yourself although I don't understand why they can't all be killed. Something else frustrating is how you can avoid certain enemies by ducking but because of having to move around so fast it can be difficult and there are unused buttons on the controller. Why isn't one of these unused buttons assigned to duck. Pressing down is duck but if you're trying to run and dodge it would be far better to also have a button available. I love the style of this game where you go up floor by floor dodging enemies and the art style is nice and simple in a way that's alright to look at. I just wish it wasn't so brutally impossibly hard. The difficulty was recently lowered, however the main problems come from how the game is designed and due to certain things missing. Unfortunately I would have to recommend giving this one a pass, it just isn't where it needs to be and at that price you will not be happy with it.
The game is very challenging ,It can make players repeatedly challenge The production team is also very serious about promoting , this is very worthy of praise Simple and not cumbersome operation! suitable for platformmaniacs.
Gave this a try since the developer was kind enough to provide me with a free key. Sadly, this game proved frustrating right out of the gate. Hard to get a flow for the gameplay as the difficulty curve is non-existent. You’re just punished straight away with unsettlingly hard gameplay. I don’t mind a challenge if the rewards are there. In my short time with this game, there were no such rewards to speak of. The graphics are Atari-2600 quality, music was annoying, and the game design in general just turned me off. Word of advice - utilize a difficulty curve instead of just pounding the player into the pavement from the word Go. Thanks to the developer for providing the free code, but unfortunately I won’t be playing your game or recommending it to anyone. 😕. I wish you luck in future game development.
What is this ♥♥♥♥? Stop paying people to rate your game good. This isn't even debatable, your game is outright just not good. Your game shouldn't remind anyone of any older (retro) games, because as far as I'm aware, older games didn't have literal ♥♥♥♥ falling from the sky. Older games at least gave you the chance of winning, which is something that this game does not. There are positive reviews that I have read that say that they haven't gotten past level 1, yet they still rate it positive? Delete this from the Steam Store. I can't believe some ♥♥♥♥ like this got past any sort of quality control. POST-DEV-RESPONSE EDIT: (Glad that I got a dev. response on this within a mere 3 hours, so at least support is good. Nowhere did I say that the game is unbeatable, just in case you forgot to actually drag your eyes across the review, I said that your game does not give the chance for anyone to beat it, the video you linked does not represent how my gameplay experience went at all. I had several friends comment on the game, which was mostly just laughing, and to put it lightly, they said the game looked like garbage and that it was dumb because I had enemies spraying out of the walls. I don't care about your "no hit" video created by you or someone who endorses you, and there's no reason for you to link it. For you to even have posted that video should have cause a little light in your head to start flashing in which that little light goes, "Wait! Maybe we should make the game less of a confusing jumble of disgusting-looking enemies and actually design a good game in which most of our players do not feel confused immediately after starting the game!" That would have been a smart idea, but instead you make a video basically saying, "Look! It's possible, stop telling us our game is bad!" You didn't feel the need to address any of the other issues, purely just that I said the game doesn't give you the chance to succeed, which in my case it didn't. The video you posted looked far easier than what the actual gameplay experience is, just because you have someone sit at your game, practicing it for who knows how long, doesn't mean that it's not a difficult/dumb game.) MORE CRITICISM: • No real purpose behind being hard. It's not labeled as a "rage game." It's not a Dark Souls-esque game in which enemies have absurdly high HP It's not a puzzle game in which it requires brainpower to beat It's just a game that has objects falling and moving in every conceivable way in order to confuse the player. • Lazy. Enemy design, I mean c'mon, that's not a boulder. Once again, there's fecal matter coming from your sky. You couldn't have made that something like coconuts or literally anything else but something like ♥♥♥♥. Music track is short & repetitive, loops over and over. •Developer Well, most of the reviews say they got it for free, from their Steam Curator page, which is alright, but nearly all of these are positive. I didn't pay for this game, hell I'm not even rating it positively because I got it for free, but neither did a majority of other people and many individuals tend to rate free things better purely BECAUSE they got it for free and they want to continue getting games for free because that's how small developers work.
