In Slasher VR, players take on the role of an undercover reporter that has been sent to the town of Waterbury to investigate a string of murders that have been committed by a serial killer known only as The Executioner. Starting off in a dark motel room, an ominous call from a woman leads gamers to believe that there is more to the story than meets the eye, as it seems that the reporter has a deeper connection with the individual. However, this plot point isn't explored any further, other than in a short, anti-climatic end scene.
The gameplay itself is unique, and Slasher VR seems to be the first game to incorporate 360 FMV sequences alongside a couple of fully explorable areas. It's reminiscent of old FMV horror games such as Harvester and Phantasmagoria, though with subtle modern twists and in a first-person point of view. The title also comes with a B-Grade quality akin to these older games, with bad acting and cheesy dialogue to complete the ensemble. There's no tutorial, however there are only a couple of buttons that can be used, one to move, and one to pick up items, and as such the controls aren't difficult to figure out.
With that said, there are a plethora of issues with this release that should be noted. First off, many of the scenes that are included in the trailer and screenshots on the store page simply do not exist in the actual game. An even bigger problem is the terrible quality of the 360 FMV sequences, moreso during the few kill scenes that actually show The Executioner. The scenes are far too dark, and they're also blocky and pixelated. There is only one true ending, and it's as short as it is anti-climactic; I even attempted to see if there was an alternate ending by visiting every location and surviving, which made me sit through every 360 FMV sequence yet again with no way to skip them. If you venture to try and find all of the kill scenes, you'll be disappointed to find that there are only two.
For the price, Slasher VR isn't terrible, but it's by no means something that you'll be missing out on if you don't decide to partake in the experience. It leaves much to be desired, and it would benefit from more varied kill scenes, as well as branching endings; or at the very least, a better ending overall. The developer should consider taking down the media that is not included in the game, as it's in a way false advertising. The store page also shows much better quality for the 360 FMV scenes than what is actually presented in the final product.
