There's a simple secret to desiging sword play in VR that no one seems to have figured out. Know a little bit about sword play to begin with. Mindblowing huh? I guess a generation raised on RPGs, MMORPGs and film choreography have assumed block/swing is how it goes Death Dojo is a masterclass in badly designed mechanices. Gameplay consists of performing the perscribed block at the right time to be presented with the opportunity to deal damage to your opponent. Thats it really This is essentially the dreaded press-x-not-die- mechanic transported into VR. On the plus side the environment and the models are suitably menacing and impressive
Its pretty good for a free VR title. Its got 4 modes of difficulty, each increasing the speed/variability of the enemy's attack. The enemy has basically 3-4 attacks, left, right, overhead and power overhead. You cannot block the power overhead so you need to side step. Side stepping is not difficult however as you do get some time to react, but since the mixups between blockable and unblockable are hard to read sometimes, its not "easy". The gameplay itself is sort of turn based. The only way to score hits is blocking the enemy's attacks properly. The one issue I had was blocking to the left did not feel "right" as often the enemy's weapon would pass through my parry even if I was in a ready position (sword on the left already). This might indicate that the weak side of your dominate hand may have issues blocking. Overall it feels like a polished tech demo, which along with the price tag of free, makes it an easy recommendation for anyone who wants to try what the swordfighting genre of VR has to offer in a nutshell. Also bonus points for some light paper physics on the scrolls which you use to interact with to start the game. Plus, this is probably the only game where you can experience getting decapitated and watching your head fall from a POV perspective. Gruesome, yet oddly interesting.

After getting a 3rd sensor so it registers my movements, I found out the game is an actual ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. There is no freedom, you have to move in specific way and block in specific way to actually defend yourself. If you are looking for a sword-fighting game this is not it. You are very limited in what you can do here and you have to stick to the way the dev wanted the game to be played instead of the way you want to play it. DISAPPOINTED/10
Haven't played long, but it only recently came out and it's active enough where I wouldn't want to play it for a 2 hour clip. Most of the time I played, I had to really pay close attention to the blade's movements so I could appropriately parry. The overhead attacks that cannot be parried can be sidestepped or back stepped, which is nice. I like that there's a sort of turn based element to the combat. Parry attacks and randomly make your opponent vulnerable to your slice. You can't just charge in and start swinging, the enemy is only vulnerable if the red target marker appears. I don't know if I'm encountering a bug or a hidden combat perk, but it seems sometimes I can parry and attack at the same time. As if sometimes my parry will also damage my opponent. I've behaded at least 1 of my opponents by a parry-slice attack. Since the game only requires one hand, you can hold your controller with both of your hands to emulate a two handed grip. I even tried to mimic my opponent's stance to see if I could get some semblance of an idea of how a samurai would wield their weapon and engage in this kind of combat. That was kind of fun, and worth it for a free download!
By all means download and play through it since it's just a free little minigame and makes a nice attempt at being atmospheric, but the combat is really a let down. I basically mastered the game in under 30 minutes. There's four difficulty levels and the difficulty spikes by a little at the third. Once you die a few times to him you'll have learned to read all the attacks in the game (there's only a few and all are telegraphed), so the final difficulty is a breeze by comparison.
I dunno about this one. I hovered between like and dislike for a while. The graphics are well done, the models are menacing. The animation quality is not great, The gameplay initially seemed interesting, but falls flat quickly when you realize what it is. While I want to like this, I think ultimately, I don't.
Death Dojo is a free VR melee game. It worked on my HTC Vive and Index system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok. Your opponent broadcasts his attack, you have to put up the correct counter, then you have some moments after the counter to make attack stroke. If you just attack at random, it looks like he is blocking all. Has dark gory graphics, the artwork is ok. If you die to one of the attacks, you head falls to the floor and give you a nasty vertigo effect. Has four modes of difficulty. You need some room to move around in your play space to dodge attacks left or right. Try this game out for free, you might like it. For more info: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmp3mEHAu40
