Sky Mercenaries is a top down Japanese style shmup with a couple of twists, the biggest of which is you can change "modes" which reflects in either red or blue fire. Blue is spread out, red is more focused. The developers did a pretty decent job with the artwork, it's not stellar but it's also not winning any awards. It's not lazy retro pixel graphics, so that is commendable. Gameplay is pretty fluid, but not perfect, your ship has a huge hitbox and the enemy fire is often the same colour as your own, making it hard to know where to dodge on the typically busy shmup screen, this is frustrating. Also, there's no 4K support, just HD, so the graphics look a little muddy on a UHD display. $14.50 is way too high for a simple 2D game on Steam, too. I'd like to give this a "maybe" for shmup fans, but there's too much wrong with it for me to give it a thumbs up.

Sky Mercenaries is an independent vertical shoot’em-up that attempts to blend classic arcade action with modern progression mechanics. Developed by PolarityFlow and Adrian Zingg and published by PolarityFlow, the game presents itself as more than a straightforward bullet-dodging experience. Instead of relying purely on fast reflexes and high-score chasing, it introduces character growth, customizable ships, and skill development systems that give players a stronger sense of long-term progression. This approach helps distinguish it from many traditional shooters that focus almost exclusively on short, repeatable arcade sessions. The game takes players through a lengthy campaign spread across multiple worlds filled with hostile forces, dangerous environments, and powerful bosses. The mission structure provides a respectable amount of content, with numerous objectives and encounters that keep the action moving at a steady pace. Enemy variety is one of the game's strengths, as players face a broad range of opponents that behave differently and require unique strategies to defeat. Large boss encounters serve as major highlights, often filling the screen with projectiles and demanding careful movement, pattern recognition, and efficient use of available weapons. One of the most interesting elements of Sky Mercenaries is its color-based combat system. Rather than simply firing endlessly at every target, players must pay attention to how enemies interact with different weapon modes. Certain opponents react differently depending on the selected color, while shields and defensive mechanics encourage tactical switching during combat. This creates an additional layer of decision-making that goes beyond standard shooter conventions. The mechanic is simple enough to understand quickly but adds enough depth to keep battles engaging throughout the campaign. The progression system is where the game truly separates itself from many genre competitors. Players earn experience, level up their pilots, and invest points into various skills that influence combat performance. These upgrades can improve survivability, increase offensive power, or unlock useful passive abilities that change the way encounters unfold. Ship customization further expands player choice, allowing different builds that cater to individual preferences. Some players may focus on heavy firepower and aggressive playstyles, while others may prioritize defense and endurance during tougher missions. This RPG-inspired structure gives a satisfying sense of advancement and rewards continued play. Visually, Sky Mercenaries delivers colorful environments, vibrant weapon effects, and energetic combat sequences. While it does not possess the visual polish of major studio productions, the presentation successfully captures the excitement expected from the genre. Explosions are flashy, enemy designs are varied, and the different worlds provide enough environmental diversity to prevent the adventure from feeling repetitive. The visual clarity generally remains solid even during intense firefights, which is essential for a game built around dodging large volumes of enemy fire. The soundtrack and overall atmosphere complement the fast-paced gameplay well. Battles feel energetic and constantly active, helping maintain momentum throughout longer play sessions. The inclusion of local cooperative play also adds considerable value. Teaming up with another player introduces a different dynamic to combat, making difficult missions more manageable while increasing the fun factor. Cooperative play enhances the game's replayability and fits naturally with its arcade-inspired roots. Despite its many strengths, Sky Mercenaries is not entirely free from flaws. Some players may find the progression systems introduce occasional grinding, particularly when attempting to unlock stronger upgrades or optimize character builds. Certain missions can feel repetitive after extended play, and the production values occasionally reveal the limitations of its indie budget. Those seeking a pure arcade shooter experience may also feel that the RPG mechanics slightly slow the pace compared to more traditional genre offerings. Even with these shortcomings, Sky Mercenaries succeeds in offering a compelling combination of arcade shooting and role-playing progression. The extensive mission content, customizable pilots and ships, strategic combat mechanics, challenging bosses, and cooperative features provide plenty of reasons to keep playing. It may not reinvent the shoot’em-up genre, but it delivers a creative and enjoyable take on it that rewards both skill and long-term investment. Rating: 7/10
