About
Gather your friends (or just yourself) and step into a world without a script. Skaldsong is a multiplayer RPG platform that combines the deep mechanics of classic CRPGs with the narrative freedom of tabletop role-playing. Here, the story is not pre-written. It's generated live, guided either by a human Game Master using our toolset, or by an advanced generative AI that acts as your Game Master.
There is daily free AI Usage for everyone!
Stuck as a forever DM? Lacking friends but want to play a TTRPG? Have friends but nobody wants to be the one to run the game? Just want to see what AI can do?
Then this game is for you.
Skaldsong is not another hastily thrown together AI chatbot. It is a complete game engine with robust, underlying systems that feel like a modern evolution of classic MUDs (Multi-User Dungeons). The AI's role is not to solely run the game, but to create content for it.
You are not limited to pure adventure games, using custom Game Rules, you can play all sorts of games- Slice of Life school romance? The management of a mercenary company? Fight in the gladiator pits? Interstellar Empire management? With the right ruleset, the AI can smoothly run about any game you can define.
When the AI responds to your actions, its narrative is embedded with special [Tags]. Our custom parser reads these tags and translates them into mechanical changes within the game state. If the AI describes you finding a sword, a [Create_Item] tag mechanically adds that sword to your inventory. This system ensures that the story and the game mechanics are always perfectly in sync.
While the interaction is text-based, the world is fully visualized. You are not just reading text; you are interacting with graphical character sheets, inventory windows, a world map, quest logs, and more.
I'm tired of hastily put together AI games that look like, frankly, dogwater. Skaldsong is a demonstration of how you can truly use AI not to replace the game, but enhance it.
Skaldsong is free to download and play. The core software, including the multiplayer framework and all non-AI GM tools, is available to everyone at no cost, meaning if you join a friend or public lobby, you will have to pay nothing to play with them.
Additionally, every player gets 40 free actions/generations using our subscription model for free per day.
If you want unlimited usage of the subscription model, there is a $15 subscription for 30 days of unlimited usage available for purchase in-game or a higher tier $25 subscription which includes image generation.
But to use the premium models and image generation, these all use credits which can be purchased through Steam. Credits are spent as used. The cost of AI features (outside Unlimited usage) depends on factors such as the size of your game world, how many characters are in your game, and various other settings you can tweak to meet your cost threshold. Tips on managing cost and other helpful information can be found on the Skaldsong Discord.
When you play with the AI GM, you just tell it what genre, setting, and type of game you'd like to play. Guided by those, the AI's responsibilities include:
Reactive Storytelling: Generating narrative outcomes, NPC dialogue, and environmental descriptions based on your party's specific actions.
On-Demand Content: Creating new characters, items, quests, and locations as the story demands them.
AI-Powered Art: Generating images based on your characters and locations. Generally, if a character is wearing something, the image will show it. If you see an object in a scene? You can interact with it. Create character portraits, item icons, and stunning location art on the fly. These assets are then automatically shared with all connected players, bringing your shared world to life visually. You can select from a list of pre-written art styles or create your own.
Built-In Text-to-Speech with Custom Voices: If your computer can handle it, you can use our built-in TTS system to generate voice overs for your game using custom voices. You can use one of the preset ones or add your own!
Built on Steamworks, Skaldsong is designed for a hassle-free multiplayer experience. The host controls the world, and clients connect to share in the adventure. Our system automatically synchronizes all necessary game assets, including any AI-generated images or custom music tracks the host chooses to use.
When using the AI, only the lobby host needs to have credits. If you're playing as a player, there is absolutely no cost associated with AI usage.
Designed to work with all your information being in windows you can scale, resize, and reposition. Use one of the pre-built color themes or make your own. Use a custom background or let the game set the background based on the location your party is in. Change to a favored font even.
You can even drag 'stickers' of your characters and items onto the screen to place them directly in the location as you play.
But the most important thing, is that the UI won't make you want to puke!
The AI is completely optional. Skaldsong can be used as a powerful platform for running your own TTRPG campaigns with friends. As a human GM, you can ignore the AI entirely and use the game's systems to:
Track character stats, health, and inventories for all players.
Manage a world map with custom locations.
Create and assign quests through the built-in quest log.
Distribute loot and currency mechanically.
Keep a persistent, savable record of your campaign world.
Play included or custom music or other .mp3s to all of your players at once

liked the game, the person I have been playing with had me make a review
Super GOATED as a longtime forever DM
Shows promise but currently the replies given seem exceptionally brief. Plenty of AI errors like adding characters to a party without good reason to do so. It's free so of course one should try it but I cant see myself paying for it with its current quality level.

It's real good at resource tracking. I have a silver werewolf, a vampire, a fairy, and a Galeclaw Roc following me around in my party rn. I am enjoying the journey. Also after writing my tragic irl backstory for the werewolf campaign it decided I should be a ghost werewolf so yeah. This AI be cookin
I'm just gonna say a few things right out of the gate before getting into the review proper. First, yes, the store page says this is free, and yes, when you go into it and start running through a campaign, you'll see stuff about tokens and such, and will eventually be told that you have no more tokens available to use to keep going, and then likely see the subscriptions and stuff. That's because AI are not cheap to run if you're not a multi-billion company, meaning the dev is the one paying in order to keep the AI in it running, let alone keep working on the game and, you know, survive. Meaning, yea, it's not TRULY free, but if you have a problem with just that, then don't worry, you can hook up your own AI into it for free and use THAT if you want, the dev himself or anyone else in the discord will help you set it up, and it's not even that hard or time consuming, I managed to do it, plus, it's FREE. Anyways, second, there are a large number of negative reviews that simply seem to boil down to "It's not REALLY free" or "AI bad", just ignore those if you see them, they clearly don't really know what they're talking about, And the third, less important thing, I'd probably just repeat what a lot of other positive reviews have said, so I'll try to keep what I say to more specific things that others may not have said, or something unique to myself. Now, review time. As you can probably tell by my hours, I've been quite enjoying my time. I loved being able to play things like D&D with my friends, and with us living in different time zones now, but now it's kind of hard to really get us together to do any longer-lasting campaigns anymore, either in person or otherwise, and this, while it doesn't help THAT problem, because of course it won't, it DOES help me scratch the itch of playing ttrpg's, of which I have a lot built up. Even ignoring that, I honestly LOVE the current official campaigns that the dev has made, and I personally think it's worth just simply taking a look at the campaigns, especially if you are a more creative kind of person like I am. You can even make your OWN campaigns if you want, and the dev is even going to add an easier way to get your start in creating one in the future, which I am personally excited for. Along with that, the dev is honestly just super chill and willing to help out with any problem someone has, like with me and my weird ghost bugs that only I have been having for some reason, and is quite active, both in terms of interaction on discord, and in terms of updating the game with bug fixes, tweaks, QoL, whole new features, all of that. Now, to circle back to what I've mentioned before, yes, it's not TECHNICALLY free, in a sense at least, you have 40 free tokens that reset each day for you to play around with, and are honestly moreso for someone new to this to see if they like it, and if they do, they can either do one of the two paid subscriptions the dev offers, OR, you can have a quick pop onto the discord and get a quick little tutorial on how to set up your own api key and hook it into the game, all for FREE (provided you pick a free AI), and honestly little hassle. I figured I'd mention that TWICE to make sure it would stick into peoples heads, as some people can be stubborn, or maybe have undiagnosed hearing problems, which I hope they get sorted for their sake. TL,DR; This is very fun, the discord is there if you need help with ANYTHING, and honestly, just simply give it a look regardless, maybe you'll get inspired by it in some way. Edit: Fixed some spelling mistakes, and tried to make sure what I wrote came off the way I wanted, as I don't word very good sometimes.
This is a solid wrapper around text LLM generation that handles a lot of "paper work" you'd see a GM handling in a TTRPG: maps, location and NPC descriptions, and so on. The negative reviews are from people who don't realize that you can get a Gemini API key for *free* and it works with Skaldsong just fine. Update: Three of them have since updated their review to disable comments. Those now-hidden comments? Pointing out (a) their lack of effort in figuring out how to get a Gemini API key for free or (b) misrepresenting Skaldsong's payment structure.
You know me Saakra To be honest, the prices are fair and people who don't think so are bums. The game is great and peasants who defy me can eat the fireball I will cast
I have such mixed opinions on this. On the one hand, the game has a lot of promise. However, it under-delivers. I can only get a little bit into campaigns before one of two things happen. 1. Suddenly the narrative text devolves into text with tags, attributes, etc. The fights appear in the chat but aren't really happening. The quest rewards aren't being given. New quests aren't being tracked. Reloading doesn't fix it. The campaign just becomes unplayable. Or 2. We wind up going in circles with repeated text over and over like we're going to two different rooms back and forth. I can't tell if the language is just limited or if we actually are going to 2 different rooms without progression. It goes on so long I do an AI meta request to progress it, but that level of troubleshooting feels cheap and ruins the fun. Up until the campaign breaks down (unfortunately relatively quickly, maybe 1-2 quests?), it's really fun and seemingly impressive. Unless this gets fixed, though, I absolutely cannot recommend it.
A storytelling playground. It's basically a tabletop rpg engine that uses AI with many impressive features. You just type things and it embellishes like regular AI but in addition it makes combat and ability rolls. It has a quest engine and tracking. I play it every day seeing my characters grow and adventure. THe biggest problem that you are limited to how many prompts you get per day just like all AI sites but you can buy more. So if you want to use this for your multiplayer rpgs (WHICH IT DOES!!!!) you have to pay for it. Best part is that it has an acting dev that listens to suggestions and problems and fixes them :) rare these days
If I could down vote this into oblivion I would. the ai locked me in endless darkness with no way out. I started the game getting bit by a werewolf and I was locked out of making any choices within the first few message and I missed every skill check given to me even though my character was trained in those skills. The only time I saw results is when I broke the game by creating a character that could rewrite reality, and rewind time. I then put all of my points into int (20) and still got my ♥♥♥♥ beaten in. even though I was killing everything around me.. do not waste your time because the game is broken and youre limited to only a few responses because its free, but you cant pay for it so get ♥♥♥♥♥♥.
