About
Gather your friends (or just yourself) and step into a world without a script. Skaldsong is a multiplayer RPG platform that combines the deep mechanics of classic CRPGs with the narrative freedom of tabletop role-playing. Here, the story is not pre-written. It's generated live, guided either by a human Game Master using our toolset, or by an advanced generative AI that acts as your Game Master.
There is daily free AI Usage for everyone!
Stuck as a forever DM? Lacking friends but want to play a TTRPG? Have friends but nobody wants to be the one to run the game? Just want to see what AI can do?
Then this game is for you.
Skaldsong is not another hastily thrown together AI chatbot. It is a complete game engine with robust, underlying systems that feel like a modern evolution of classic MUDs (Multi-User Dungeons). The AI's role is not to solely run the game, but to create content for it.
You are not limited to pure adventure games, using custom Game Rules, you can play all sorts of games- Slice of Life school romance? The management of a mercenary company? Fight in the gladiator pits? Interstellar Empire management? With the right ruleset, the AI can smoothly run about any game you can define.
When the AI responds to your actions, its narrative is embedded with special [Tags]. Our custom parser reads these tags and translates them into mechanical changes within the game state. If the AI describes you finding a sword, a [Create_Item] tag mechanically adds that sword to your inventory. This system ensures that the story and the game mechanics are always perfectly in sync.
While the interaction is text-based, the world is fully visualized. You are not just reading text; you are interacting with graphical character sheets, inventory windows, a world map, quest logs, and more.
I'm tired of hastily put together AI games that look like, frankly, dogwater. Skaldsong is a demonstration of how you can truly use AI not to replace the game, but enhance it.
Skaldsong is free to download and play. The core software, including the multiplayer framework and all non-AI GM tools, is available to everyone at no cost, meaning if you join a friend or public lobby, you will have to pay nothing to play with them.
Additionally, every player gets 40 free actions/generations using our subscription model for free per day.
If you want unlimited usage of the subscription model, there is a $15 subscription for 30 days of unlimited usage available for purchase in-game or a higher tier $25 subscription which includes image generation.
But to use the premium models and image generation, these all use credits which can be purchased through Steam. Credits are spent as used. The cost of AI features (outside Unlimited usage) depends on factors such as the size of your game world, how many characters are in your game, and various other settings you can tweak to meet your cost threshold. Tips on managing cost and other helpful information can be found on the Skaldsong Discord.
When you play with the AI GM, you just tell it what genre, setting, and type of game you'd like to play. Guided by those, the AI's responsibilities include:
Reactive Storytelling: Generating narrative outcomes, NPC dialogue, and environmental descriptions based on your party's specific actions.
On-Demand Content: Creating new characters, items, quests, and locations as the story demands them.
AI-Powered Art: Generating images based on your characters and locations. Generally, if a character is wearing something, the image will show it. If you see an object in a scene? You can interact with it. Create character portraits, item icons, and stunning location art on the fly. These assets are then automatically shared with all connected players, bringing your shared world to life visually. You can select from a list of pre-written art styles or create your own.
Built-In Text-to-Speech with Custom Voices: If your computer can handle it, you can use our built-in TTS system to generate voice overs for your game using custom voices. You can use one of the preset ones or add your own!
Built on Steamworks, Skaldsong is designed for a hassle-free multiplayer experience. The host controls the world, and clients connect to share in the adventure. Our system automatically synchronizes all necessary game assets, including any AI-generated images or custom music tracks the host chooses to use.
When using the AI, only the lobby host needs to have credits. If you're playing as a player, there is absolutely no cost associated with AI usage.
Designed to work with all your information being in windows you can scale, resize, and reposition. Use one of the pre-built color themes or make your own. Use a custom background or let the game set the background based on the location your party is in. Change to a favored font even.
You can even drag 'stickers' of your characters and items onto the screen to place them directly in the location as you play.
But the most important thing, is that the UI won't make you want to puke!
The AI is completely optional. Skaldsong can be used as a powerful platform for running your own TTRPG campaigns with friends. As a human GM, you can ignore the AI entirely and use the game's systems to:
Track character stats, health, and inventories for all players.
Manage a world map with custom locations.
Create and assign quests through the built-in quest log.
Distribute loot and currency mechanically.
Keep a persistent, savable record of your campaign world.
Play included or custom music or other .mp3s to all of your players at once

This is definitely the best AI game master I have played with. It keeps track of the history, locations, characters, relationships, factions and inventory. It tracks the distance between locations and doesn't go into an infinite loop like some AI gamemasters I play. You will definitely need to take some time to learn how to play it by watching the tutorials. Once you have done so, the freedom of choice and the coherence of the entire story is definitely thoroughly satisfying. Disclaimer I use the Gemini Pro model and play with store credits. You may have a different experience if you choose to play free or on the subscription model
This is not for people who don't know how to roleplay using AI. If this is your first time using it, I'd strongly recommend what some other people have - that you use other, free or less-expensive AIs online. But if you're coming from one of those and want more, a system built to help you control the AI's output for the story you want it to tell and keep it cohesive, you're in the right place. As someone experienced with AI the new Quick Start feature was all I needed to hop in. Buying and using credits for the inbuilt API is expensive but worthwhile, and if you'd rather not deal with that you can buy a monthly pass or use some tutorials on the game's Discord to use a free key. This isn't for everyone, but it is absolutely phenomenal when it works and easy to fix when it doesn't. My few complaints are that the inbuilt map gen feature can take a lot of memory and the game's current state is still quite buggy, but the game's devs are very active on Discord and actively working to patch and improve the game. If you're already a fan of things like AI Dungeon, I'd recommend to give this a try.

My gambling addict friend said if I post a review and it gets 150 likes and 50 Awards that he will buy me a case of beer, some vodka and 1 kg of lemon So im just gonna leave this here. Мой друг-игроман сказал, что если я опубликую отзыв и он наберет 150 лайков и 50 наград, он купит мне ящик пива, немного водки и 1 кг лимона, так что я просто оставлю это здесь.
Only played through the first day with my initial 40 prompts, but love the concept and look forward to playing many more sessions, while I understand a lot of people being put off by the AI pricing model there are alternatives and workarounds for it not that I haven’t payed the same or more for monthly subscriptions to MMOs like Warcraft plus a $60-$100 expansion every two years, TLDR a lot of fun to be had and interesting D&D type scenarios to play out and enjoy appreciate your work on it.
Found this game just yesterday but it's captivated me instantly, the game allows some free use daily to show you its capabilities and has a way to support the creator which allows unlimited access after for a month (it is ai, therefor it isn't a cheap item to run, so give some slack on the limited free uses and such) I had a roommate start a run the exact same as mine for story, but our two approaches were completely different that in 30min of decision making had completely changed our games from the other. I'm making fake currency in blackmarkets while they became a gladiator slave. Super in depth and can't wait to see how this grows further Returning edit: now i've accumulated over 390 hours compared to my original 6ish when reviewing. Quite frankly the game is amazing if you have the creativity and patience for it. Having your own custom campaigns you can have generate and the ai acting like a DM adds so much potential. I say have patience because you can't flood it with too much context at once, trying to perform more than 2-3 actions in one generation can lead to hiccups yes, or if you start stacking passive traits the ai must always keep track of on top of your usual gameplay (like i added extra, caravan modifiers (hull, fuel, supplies, upgrades), anomalies, and mutations). To which the AI does great ill call it 85% of the time with all of those additions on top of my campaign itself, occasionally needing a tweak here and there. game is for those who enjoy D&D at their own pace and can accept occasional oddities from having your own game made for you real time. Overall gem I happily enjoy and will continue to sink endless hours by myself or with the occasional buddy for a campaign.
The best AI RPG client I've found. The developer has been receptive to feedback and is continuing to roll out frequent updates for quality of life and additional features. Note: this client relies on AI, obviously. There's built-in options for mainstream AIs, which you have to pay for. But you don't HAVE to use the defaults. If you already have an API key you can use that. Or, if you have a powerful PC and know what you're doing you can point the client at your own local model. No internet connection or subscription required. Hint: to enable the advanced settings you need to add "--api" to your launch options in the Steam Library.
A capped time for play sessions, there have to be a better way to get money than this. If I can't keep play then I'm not going to, simple as. plus it a base AI model.
Useful tool, as well as a standalone game. Up to 8 players. Stock LLM has a cost that you can get a sweet deal on by using the dev's $25 a month subscription (which is cheaper than paying per prompt, which is the other option) or use the free (yes, free) gemini api key from your google account for exactly zero dollars. The discord has a very simple explanation for how to do this. Dev is extremely active, so far the updates have been multiple per week, and you can talk to the guy on his discord. He practically lives for this game. Quality 'tism project, and has a ton of tools inside to make pretty much whatever kind of dnd game you want, with even more stuff on the way. Worth trying if you're even remotely interested.
"this cannot fail"
was having fun until it told me I have reached by 40 lines of content and must purchase more or an unlimited A.I.
