About
Gather your friends (or just yourself) and step into a world without a script. Skaldsong is a multiplayer RPG platform that combines the deep mechanics of classic CRPGs with the narrative freedom of tabletop role-playing. Here, the story is not pre-written. It's generated live, guided either by a human Game Master using our toolset, or by an advanced generative AI that acts as your Game Master.
There is daily free AI Usage for everyone!
Stuck as a forever DM? Lacking friends but want to play a TTRPG? Have friends but nobody wants to be the one to run the game? Just want to see what AI can do?
Then this game is for you.
Skaldsong is not another hastily thrown together AI chatbot. It is a complete game engine with robust, underlying systems that feel like a modern evolution of classic MUDs (Multi-User Dungeons). The AI's role is not to solely run the game, but to create content for it.
You are not limited to pure adventure games, using custom Game Rules, you can play all sorts of games- Slice of Life school romance? The management of a mercenary company? Fight in the gladiator pits? Interstellar Empire management? With the right ruleset, the AI can smoothly run about any game you can define.
When the AI responds to your actions, its narrative is embedded with special [Tags]. Our custom parser reads these tags and translates them into mechanical changes within the game state. If the AI describes you finding a sword, a [Create_Item] tag mechanically adds that sword to your inventory. This system ensures that the story and the game mechanics are always perfectly in sync.
While the interaction is text-based, the world is fully visualized. You are not just reading text; you are interacting with graphical character sheets, inventory windows, a world map, quest logs, and more.
I'm tired of hastily put together AI games that look like, frankly, dogwater. Skaldsong is a demonstration of how you can truly use AI not to replace the game, but enhance it.
Skaldsong is free to download and play. The core software, including the multiplayer framework and all non-AI GM tools, is available to everyone at no cost, meaning if you join a friend or public lobby, you will have to pay nothing to play with them.
Additionally, every player gets 40 free actions/generations using our subscription model for free per day.
If you want unlimited usage of the subscription model, there is a $15 subscription for 30 days of unlimited usage available for purchase in-game or a higher tier $25 subscription which includes image generation.
But to use the premium models and image generation, these all use credits which can be purchased through Steam. Credits are spent as used. The cost of AI features (outside Unlimited usage) depends on factors such as the size of your game world, how many characters are in your game, and various other settings you can tweak to meet your cost threshold. Tips on managing cost and other helpful information can be found on the Skaldsong Discord.
When you play with the AI GM, you just tell it what genre, setting, and type of game you'd like to play. Guided by those, the AI's responsibilities include:
Reactive Storytelling: Generating narrative outcomes, NPC dialogue, and environmental descriptions based on your party's specific actions.
On-Demand Content: Creating new characters, items, quests, and locations as the story demands them.
AI-Powered Art: Generating images based on your characters and locations. Generally, if a character is wearing something, the image will show it. If you see an object in a scene? You can interact with it. Create character portraits, item icons, and stunning location art on the fly. These assets are then automatically shared with all connected players, bringing your shared world to life visually. You can select from a list of pre-written art styles or create your own.
Built-In Text-to-Speech with Custom Voices: If your computer can handle it, you can use our built-in TTS system to generate voice overs for your game using custom voices. You can use one of the preset ones or add your own!
Built on Steamworks, Skaldsong is designed for a hassle-free multiplayer experience. The host controls the world, and clients connect to share in the adventure. Our system automatically synchronizes all necessary game assets, including any AI-generated images or custom music tracks the host chooses to use.
When using the AI, only the lobby host needs to have credits. If you're playing as a player, there is absolutely no cost associated with AI usage.
Designed to work with all your information being in windows you can scale, resize, and reposition. Use one of the pre-built color themes or make your own. Use a custom background or let the game set the background based on the location your party is in. Change to a favored font even.
You can even drag 'stickers' of your characters and items onto the screen to place them directly in the location as you play.
But the most important thing, is that the UI won't make you want to puke!
The AI is completely optional. Skaldsong can be used as a powerful platform for running your own TTRPG campaigns with friends. As a human GM, you can ignore the AI entirely and use the game's systems to:
Track character stats, health, and inventories for all players.
Manage a world map with custom locations.
Create and assign quests through the built-in quest log.
Distribute loot and currency mechanically.
Keep a persistent, savable record of your campaign world.
Play included or custom music or other .mp3s to all of your players at once

I like the character creator, but this AI has a lot of problems in regards to turn order and registering damage and consumables. AI just isn't there yet. And yes. The image and text models used with this are censored because it uses Google models which are heavily censored.
I retract the last review, i finally got image generation to work. Apparently the trailing slash at the end of the link is the problem
40 uses (Gemini AI). $15/month subscription to use unlimited. No way.
What this is
This is a software, not a game. It's an inerface with a long term memory for gen AI, and that long term memory will keep track of some data but not of all the story. Since that can't be helped, it is not bad at what it does, compared to what exists out there up to 2025. But it's the kind of visually outdated (and I'm not saying retro, I'm saying outdated) open source like software where you need to be ready to go into an egg hunt to figure out even how to close it. It's a good idea, but beyond the state tracking, the only reason I'd be using that kind of software is the UI being beautiful and customizable, and this is aboslutely the opposite of that.
Interface design
There are many many windows open at once. It's not the most confusing maximalist and disharmonious UI I've yet seen, but still a visual mess in its own right. It's a 1995 era UI, with everthing put inside its own free moving frame with colored borders and simulated windows everywhere, without any sens of visual harmony or clarity: Buttons, labels, plain text, input pixes, everything has an independant font size, and that size is often both too big or too small. You can only change the size of the content one window at a time. But that doesn't maatter, because the changes you make don't persist: as soon as you close a window, it's size and the size of its comnents resets. One some text and the size of the windows can be chagned at once. If you have ADHD don't bother, there is only plain ahead.
Ease of use
Unless you go for external documentation, you're going to suffer to figure out everything. There is a tutorial, but it seems to be an external web page. The first thing you are guided to as a new player, is to create a character. The window is open when you start the software and that's it, you're left on your own to figure out how to move from one location to another, how to save progress (apparently there is no autosave), what character you are, what your goal is. . You don't know if you're making a persona, a party member, what's different betweeen the two. As soon as you validate that, ethier you have internet or your content is reset and a generic party memer is generated for you. it works. It's might be a good software, but it's a raw and savage one.
Tokens
We use credits to play. Do we need to pay to use the AI after a while? I don't know, there is no internal tutorial. I just know there are different subscriptions. I don't know if the AI model is from the creator or if they just route for an external IA server. The AI won't be able to help: it only roleplays, and ignore anything you say out of character.
I can't recommend it for now, as there are better alternative like AI Roguelite. I paid the 25 € subscription (hopefully the next month it will not pay again as i didn't saw a way to cancel if it behave like a classic subscription. And even with 25 €/month i don't have access to the gemini pro, i've to buy "credits". The game have a big potential, i like track of time and the map. About the map, i tried the mercenary campaign and i find the map far too small, this game doesn't seems fit for long game, maybe it's not the case and i choose the wrong campaign or i have to buy some credit to profit from a better AI. And i have a bug ( i published a screenshot on my Steam profile), asked on the forum, and still no answer, where strange text appear which render the text hard to read. Oh and also the time it take to load an image, far too long, i would prefer a list of pre-made image which would be there in function of the place. And the AI is often a bit strange, for example, after i bought a plate armor to the shopkeeper, i leave with my company to the north, we arrive in a tavern and who is the guy managing the tavern ? The same blacksmith from i bought my equipment, not just the same name, the same exact guy. But this kind of things happen in a AI base game in development. So it's not bothering me too much, i used the game master mode to make the blacksmith join my company ( which were at this point a band of lawless raiders who were hiding as a merchant caravan, which confuse the AI a bit too much) If i could i would put a neutral recommendation but it cost too much if i want the "premium" option. And i still don't know how to have an AI game master, which is apparently possible from what i heard. Too bad, i would really prefer to leave a neutral, but it's the cost of the game (not the 25 €/ month but what you've to pay to have the true version of the game) who made me gave the game a thumb down. You must be prepared to open your wallet if you want the best version. EDIT: As this game have neat features and i want to see it's potential being exploited, i will finally recommend it, i just hope the price for the best AI will be lower in the future.
depsues de escribir un par de turnos ya te pide pagar jajajaj free to play para jugar el tutorial nomas lo demas tenes que pagar como si no hubiera un mañana
