This is a very charming, uniquely Latam, hectic cooking game and I'm so glad I found it. I was hesitant to try it because of the 'Mixed' review score but once again, Steam reviews prove to be utterly worthless for appraising games. The primary complaints I see are: 1) It's not cozy — I personally don't care. Cozy games are boring. 2) It's too difficult — there's an easy mode 3) It's too hectic for two people — has not been my experience. Before each level, both players can look over the entire level and plan out what to do ahead of time. Communication and planning make the experience what it is: a rewarding, truly co-op experience 4) You have to memorize ingredient locations — they spawn in the same place every time. Git gud. Gameplay aside, the Malaysian theme is a breath of fresh air. I love that everything from what the characters wear to the food they cook is inspired by a culture that normally isn't centered in video games. Som, Gon and Merapi are delightful, silly and very cute! I love that the rest stops between levels are filled with their humor and fun interactions. Don't let the Mixed score scare you away; it's worth giving this game a shot.
I can't believe this game hasn't blown up. Overcooked focused around southeast asian dishes with a monster hunting twist? It works as great as it sounds. Me and my brother are absolutely blown away with the visuals, gameplay (ever dish feels unique) and the monsters. 10/10 would recommend.
If you know Overcooked, this game takes that formula and upgrades it in an interesting way. Instead of grabbing prepped ingredients off a counter, you're hunting for them across jungle maps where everything is randomised every level. Sounds simple but it genuinely changes how the whole thing feels. Half the time I was spamming the map just trying to figure out where the carrots went. This is not a cozy game at all. Levels are big, ingredients are all over the place, and the variety keeps it from ever feeling routine. There's a shop system for knives and powerups which I appreciated. Story is short and to the point, and the ending actually gave me a nice sense of closure which I didn't expect. One real gripe though, the gamepad bugged out on the final boss level and I literally could not cook the Tumpeng. Had to swap to keyboard right there. For a game that's clearly built around controller play that's a pretty rough moment to encounter a bug. Can't comment on multiplayer since I haven't tried it yet but solo is already a good time. Recommended for anyone who likes this genre especially if Overcooked started feeling too safe. 7/10
More or less Overcooked but with combat, which is quite fun. P.S. SEA GANG RISE UP RAHHHHHHHHHHHH
You’re gathering, you’re cooking, you’re getting pecked to death by chickens. This is THE cooking game for me because I appreciate the hard work of a small business trying to do [strike] farm[/strike] island to table in an environment where almost everything wants to throw hands with you. I've played solo and with friends and there isn't a moment I've been bored, getting pink stars are tough but not impossible if you coordinate well. The dev’s have also updated the game mechanics to make parts of the game a lot more enjoyable (ingredient map with the cool-off displayed, an alert for when the monkey comes to steal my kueh, etc) while not nuking the difficulty which I really appreciate since the chaos is part of the fun. Great game with a simple but meaningful storyline and a lot of thought behind the dishes and details that represent the region wonderfully. If you love food from Southeast Asia do not play while hungry.
SEDAP! is great
This seems like it would be a pretty fun multiplayer game. Unfortunately the game suffers both severe performance issues and bugs. The menu screen is a travelling wagon that runs like a slide show for a few seconds, then silky smooth for another few, which is really disorienting. The other thing is it insists this is a controller game, so I turn on my controller, but it reads my control stick wrong, so its center position is pointing somewhere up and to the right. But you cant just go back to select "start game" with the mouse, because the game keeps disabling it in favour of the controller input. So, I had to open and close this a few times to try different combinations to get this to work, a few restarts because I couldn't believe a game could be this broken yet somehow recommended. And thats when I discovered the other great thing it does is just hang on close, so you have you hunt around for the headless process thats still eating resources. Great! I think if the objective was "to create a game that required constant technical support until you realise that the only winning move is not to play" then the developers have achieved their goal entirely.
A fun take on the Overcooked genre, love the variety of foods I get to make! Had to get used to the combat for a while, but overall it's a fun experience.
