About
Gather your friends (or just yourself) and step into a world without a script. Skaldsong is a multiplayer RPG platform that combines the deep mechanics of classic CRPGs with the narrative freedom of tabletop role-playing. Here, the story is not pre-written. It's generated live, guided either by a human Game Master using our toolset, or by an advanced generative AI that acts as your Game Master.
There is daily free AI Usage for everyone!
Stuck as a forever DM? Lacking friends but want to play a TTRPG? Have friends but nobody wants to be the one to run the game? Just want to see what AI can do?
Then this game is for you.
Skaldsong is not another hastily thrown together AI chatbot. It is a complete game engine with robust, underlying systems that feel like a modern evolution of classic MUDs (Multi-User Dungeons). The AI's role is not to solely run the game, but to create content for it.
You are not limited to pure adventure games, using custom Game Rules, you can play all sorts of games- Slice of Life school romance? The management of a mercenary company? Fight in the gladiator pits? Interstellar Empire management? With the right ruleset, the AI can smoothly run about any game you can define.
When the AI responds to your actions, its narrative is embedded with special [Tags]. Our custom parser reads these tags and translates them into mechanical changes within the game state. If the AI describes you finding a sword, a [Create_Item] tag mechanically adds that sword to your inventory. This system ensures that the story and the game mechanics are always perfectly in sync.
While the interaction is text-based, the world is fully visualized. You are not just reading text; you are interacting with graphical character sheets, inventory windows, a world map, quest logs, and more.
I'm tired of hastily put together AI games that look like, frankly, dogwater. Skaldsong is a demonstration of how you can truly use AI not to replace the game, but enhance it.
Skaldsong is free to download and play. The core software, including the multiplayer framework and all non-AI GM tools, is available to everyone at no cost, meaning if you join a friend or public lobby, you will have to pay nothing to play with them.
Additionally, every player gets 40 free actions/generations using our subscription model for free per day.
If you want unlimited usage of the subscription model, there is a $15 subscription for 30 days of unlimited usage available for purchase in-game or a higher tier $25 subscription which includes image generation.
But to use the premium models and image generation, these all use credits which can be purchased through Steam. Credits are spent as used. The cost of AI features (outside Unlimited usage) depends on factors such as the size of your game world, how many characters are in your game, and various other settings you can tweak to meet your cost threshold. Tips on managing cost and other helpful information can be found on the Skaldsong Discord.
When you play with the AI GM, you just tell it what genre, setting, and type of game you'd like to play. Guided by those, the AI's responsibilities include:
Reactive Storytelling: Generating narrative outcomes, NPC dialogue, and environmental descriptions based on your party's specific actions.
On-Demand Content: Creating new characters, items, quests, and locations as the story demands them.
AI-Powered Art: Generating images based on your characters and locations. Generally, if a character is wearing something, the image will show it. If you see an object in a scene? You can interact with it. Create character portraits, item icons, and stunning location art on the fly. These assets are then automatically shared with all connected players, bringing your shared world to life visually. You can select from a list of pre-written art styles or create your own.
Built-In Text-to-Speech with Custom Voices: If your computer can handle it, you can use our built-in TTS system to generate voice overs for your game using custom voices. You can use one of the preset ones or add your own!
Built on Steamworks, Skaldsong is designed for a hassle-free multiplayer experience. The host controls the world, and clients connect to share in the adventure. Our system automatically synchronizes all necessary game assets, including any AI-generated images or custom music tracks the host chooses to use.
When using the AI, only the lobby host needs to have credits. If you're playing as a player, there is absolutely no cost associated with AI usage.
Designed to work with all your information being in windows you can scale, resize, and reposition. Use one of the pre-built color themes or make your own. Use a custom background or let the game set the background based on the location your party is in. Change to a favored font even.
You can even drag 'stickers' of your characters and items onto the screen to place them directly in the location as you play.
But the most important thing, is that the UI won't make you want to puke!
The AI is completely optional. Skaldsong can be used as a powerful platform for running your own TTRPG campaigns with friends. As a human GM, you can ignore the AI entirely and use the game's systems to:
Track character stats, health, and inventories for all players.
Manage a world map with custom locations.
Create and assign quests through the built-in quest log.
Distribute loot and currency mechanically.
Keep a persistent, savable record of your campaign world.
Play included or custom music or other .mp3s to all of your players at once

You have to pay for more than 40 inputs when the "DM AI" repeats the same situation several times with different words, I spent 20 of my inputs typing variations of "keep the fire" and "continue". While I support this game as a concept and really hope it gets somewhere, you are essentially forced to pay a subscription to get an AI to tell be your rail-roading "DM". To generate images for anything, items you get, characters you get and some you meet, you have to subscribe. The second you put your 40th input you are locked for 10 hours, unless you subscribe. Again, though I support this concept and hope it gets better, I can't recommend it unless you are willing to throw 25 dollaridoos at ChatGPT clone 7 every month. Edit: After some discourse in the review comments, I have yet to be dissuaded from my original problem with this software. I found this under RPG games, and assumed it was a game. However I've been corrected. As a software this is something I still wouldn't recommend, but it lightens the expectation of people which is good for the future of Skaldsong. I hope it either changes to a paid software, or adds a proper free version or scenario where people that do not want to spend money, or a lot of time trying to figure out how to access certain AI and what to do, can have a go without subscribing. Edit 2: My opinion is the same, I have disabled comments due to spam.

I had to disallow comments because the community is so toxic and hostile, Never in my life have I had to do that and I didnt think It would have ever been necessary in Steam. I guess they must really hate the devs. Edit: Even after a month of writing this and disallowing comments and making no contact, the dev has found a way to contact me in an attempt to coerce and bully me because I left a negative review, obviously still a much more posititive one. Let me re-iterate: A month later. The topic seems to be working its way from just game development to democracy and freedom of reporting. Attacks on freedom of journalism are on the rise in the world, in the USA, and now it seems, STEAM too.
Tried two different quick start campaigns in the program. The first one the program had failing 17 rolls in a row. The second one the program had me fail 47 rolls in a row - every action taken is DC 15-18. The way the game approaches rng is obsurd even for D&D. Survivability of any event being a 15 or higher on the dice. And randomly the program will just delete what you just wrote as a response and have you just instantly die disregarding what was posted and letting enemies have multiple turns of attacks against you in a row.
Gave it a try, kinda funny at first....I was in a bar/coffee shop....I was a merc my date did not show up....so i talked to the barmaid.....i tried to "make friends" I failed a Charasma check 5 times and got hit over the head (she hit me with a pitcher) lost half my hps.......then i pulled her into my lap and kissed her......and then ran out of time(credits)..... I will say what happened to my guy was amusing...but to not to have enough time to actualy play.....having to wait 2 hrs before (get more credsits) can do anything else.....makes it not worth playing..
it's an idea that has to be perfected by someone at some point, but this isn't it. The free/cheap AI models are not good enough yet it seems. The game doesn't create extra value as an LLM wrapper. The ai behind this can't keep up a conversation over 5 requests or a combat with more that one enemy. The rolls system just don't let you do anything, all difficulties are 15-18 range. So you have about 10-25% to complete any action. It's adding anti-user RNG where it doesnt belong
--no longer valid see below ... I have played this a fair bit and I like where it Could go. I've been playing the bannerlords adventure, and I have been enjoying how things are unfolding. the AI seems to keep a REASONABLE grip on the story thread, though I have noticed a few instances where it makes changes that are either a retcon or a complete skip of details. I'll likely keep playing occassionally with the 50/day free stuff, but I can't justify a $15 subscription. -- see below.. *EDIT* on further playing, I have decide I can no longer recommend this game. The AI is entirely to unstable on story elements. I have started multiple new games, and within an hour it is already making ridiculous errors, like having NPC conversate from across the map, moving NPC randomly to new locations, Giving NPCs control of areas they have no business being (Greta owns all the Taverns), Killing NPCs without any direction to do so, and soldiers dissappearing from the roster for now reason. It almost seems like it has a problem updating it's data file.
Not gonna fleece me with this AI slop
The game is pretty good if you understand what it is and what it can do, for people like me that come from sillytaven and AIdungeon, this one has a lot of stuff that we wanted, diferent in a way but it does what promised well. Something to keep in mind, while some people may not like to pay a sub or for tokens, we have to understand that for games like these, the use for online models that can be, fast, good and realiable enough cost money, there is no way to offer a one time deal on this, best you can do to source it all yourself is to check on discord how to use your own local model, but honestly you would need a really beefy computer to even try to have a good experience, and I'm talking of having real computational power and vram, not just having something like a 4070ti like me, hopefully we can get better models for cheaper in the future, but for now this is what we have. There is a learning curve, I really reccomend cheking the tutorial videos provided, even if you come from sillytavern, AIdungeon or Talemate, please check them out, they will make the experience a lot smoother. A special point I like from this one in particular is that you can basically build a whole campain/world and define almost every little aspect of it, from places to lore, item, people and places have history, so they keep track of actual relevant data, like a big incident or help you keep some things in consideration, not so long ago factions and relatinoships where added, something amazing to play with, you can make characters have relationships and develop them, manually or the AI can update them as you play. there is a date feature so there is a clear definition of then stuff happened and what time is now, so for context you can keep track of it and so the AI, I find this really useful for long plays, so there is a sence of progression, more if you are playing a more long run play, this is also amazing for people that like to keep logs, the history part can tell what has been happening on the world and what past event happened, letting you flesh even more the lore of the world. Unlike Aidungeon, here battles are more party oriented, is not one entity versus another entity with other people maybe involving, on battle the enemies are individually tracked so is your party, each one roll separately, of course you can try coordinated stuff, but each ones is tracked separately as an entity, there is also lethal and non lethal damage, so not every battle mean death for the npcs. Honestly I really reccomend to give it a try, they offer some free interactions a day so peple can check it out, also the dev is really helpful and friendly, usually he deal with bugs and fix them in a day or less, he really take into consideration suggestions and explain things with honesty. Important to say, you can get your own free Gemini Api key, is not hard, and is a good option to play for free, of course the paid models are a lot better, but that is another topic, if you want to play more for free, just check the free api key anyone can generate from gemini
So the game locks up after you use it for awhile (I think 40 prompts allowed?) then you can buy "credits" or pay 30 bucks a month for unlimited access. I already was using Microsofts copilot to run a walking dead dnd campaign for just me and thats 100% free, can do all the same features (and in alot of cases better). I think this was a very cool concept but the insane cost for use when theres better and free ai already out there makes me have to say nah to this.
I've now played this game for about 10 hours at the time of this review and i cannot accurately state how awesome this game has been. It has both scratched my need to no longer be the forever DM, something i've been since 2018, but has also done the TTRPG feeling i've been wanting for awhile now. To give a little blurb about what had happened in the game im playing now. I chose the Space starter prompt and fed it some fun little things about my character who is a Bounty Hunter. He wears Clone Wars era armour Has a custom DL-44 Blaster Is a Space Elf I've given him Mandalorian style personality in my writing and dialogue for him My first start im infront of a bar and theres this bouncer in the way. I tell him to move he disagreed and shot me. I shot back and missed so i elbowed him in the face Told him to back down, he shot me again. I took exception to that and fired twice at his face. He went down Turned out he had a bounty on him so I wrapped him up in capture wire. I then walked into the bar where my main target was that i was actually hunting. Target saw me and tried to bolt out of the bar. I took exception to that Shot my capture wire out of my gauntlet and rolled a NAT 20 and captured him instantly. Left a tip for the nice bartender lady saying I was sorry for the disturbance. Took both of them to my ship Told the corporation i had the guy they were looking for on my ship They took exception to that and shot me I got the hell out of there. That was four hours of the best fun i had in a DnD game in a long time. I cannot stress how highly I would recommend this game to either of tww major camps 1: The forever DM's who do not get to play games all that often or if at all. 2: The people who have wanted to try DnD or TTRPG's but don't have or know anyone who can run the game.
