1/5 The game is so broken, how can you mess up with the deflection angle of a ball that badly? When the ball deflects from a wall with a sharp angle, it then flies in the wrong way, or if it flies with a sharp angle and it dodges back for some reason, it's insanely stupid. If you wanted to make a workaround against potential long wait times if the angle is close to 90, you could make the ball accelerate after each hit until it hits the ceiling or a block or the ship itself, and then it would return to normal speeds after crashing with a huge bomb effect or whatnot.

Simple Ball: Extended Edition, developed and published by Antizero company, is a deliberate throwback to classic brick-breaking arcade games, built around a single mechanic and refined through repetition and incremental challenge. It doesn’t attempt to modernize the genre with complex systems or narrative ambition; instead, it focuses on delivering a clean, skill-driven experience where success depends entirely on timing, control, and consistency. From the outset, the game makes it clear that its goal is not to reinvent the formula, but to polish it into something approachable yet demanding. The core gameplay is instantly recognizable. Players control a paddle at the bottom of the screen, bouncing a ball upward to destroy blocks arranged in various patterns. While this structure is simple, the game introduces a slightly more dynamic physics system that requires careful attention to angles and movement. The ball doesn’t always behave in predictable ways, and mastering its trajectory becomes essential as levels grow more complex. This subtle emphasis on physics adds a layer of depth that keeps the gameplay from feeling entirely mechanical, even if the core idea remains unchanged. Progression is structured across a large number of levels, each gradually increasing in difficulty. Early stages act as a gentle introduction, allowing players to get comfortable with the controls and pacing. As the game advances, block formations become more intricate, requiring greater precision and planning to clear efficiently. The challenge ramps up steadily, creating a sense of progression that feels earned rather than forced. However, this difficulty curve is largely driven by complexity and speed rather than the introduction of new mechanics, which means the experience evolves in intensity but not in structure. To add some variation, the game includes a range of power-ups that can be collected during play. These bonuses can temporarily alter the gameplay, offering advantages such as increased paddle size or additional effects that make clearing blocks easier. At times, they can also introduce complications, forcing players to adapt quickly. While these elements help break up the monotony and add moments of unpredictability, they are not transformative enough to significantly change how the game is played. Instead, they function as brief diversions within an otherwise consistent loop. Visually, Simple Ball: Extended Edition embraces a minimalist but colorful style. The design prioritizes clarity, ensuring that players can easily track the ball and react to its movement without distraction. Bright effects and simple animations provide feedback that makes each successful hit feel satisfying, even if the overall presentation remains fairly basic. There is little variation in visual themes across levels, which can make extended play sessions feel somewhat repetitive, but the clean design serves its purpose well. The audio complements the visuals with functional sound effects that reinforce the physicality of the gameplay. Each collision and block break is accompanied by clear, responsive feedback, helping to maintain the rhythm of play. The music, while present, tends to fade into the background, offering support without drawing attention to itself. Like many aspects of the game, the audio design is competent but not particularly memorable. One of the game’s defining characteristics is its commitment to simplicity, which is both its greatest strength and its most noticeable limitation. On one hand, it provides a focused experience that is easy to pick up and understand, making it accessible to a wide range of players. On the other hand, the lack of new ideas or evolving mechanics means that the gameplay can start to feel repetitive over time. Once players have mastered the basic rhythm, there is little beyond increasing difficulty to keep the experience feeling fresh. Despite this, Simple Ball: Extended Edition works well as a short-session game. It’s the kind of title that can be enjoyed in quick bursts, where the satisfaction comes from improving performance and mastering its mechanics rather than exploring new content. For players who appreciate classic arcade design and the challenge of refining a single skill, it offers a solid and consistent experience. In the end, Simple Ball: Extended Edition is a faithful and straightforward take on a well-established formula. It succeeds in delivering a polished, skill-based challenge but does little to expand beyond its roots. Its simplicity makes it approachable and occasionally rewarding, but its lack of variety limits its long-term appeal. It stands as a competent example of its genre—reliable and focused, but not particularly memorable. Rating: 6/10
