Santa Rockstar is a musical game that resembles a spin-off of the Guitar Hero series, but made at a decent amateur level. The plot, if you can call it that, begins with the punk almost knocking down a deer, which, lying on the road, gives the guy a sign - to revive Santa. Remembering his childhood and his childhood "nerd" years, replaced by delight at receiving a rock guitar, he charges the Christmas air with rebellious energy and becomes... GIGA-SANTA. Together with two rocker reindeer playing drums and a guitar in the background, the player will have to go through 15 levels of the story campaign. Choosing between easy (3/4/5 buttons to press, by analogy), medium or hard difficulty, the player must play the famous Christmas songs in rock processing using a controller or keyboard.
The game's strong points include its funny and absurd storyline, original rock versions of Christmas songs, some of which sound really epic, and a challenge that's pretty doable. At first glance, resetting the combo counter and multiplier seems tough, but that's just your initial impression.
That said, Santa Rockstar has its flaws too. The game suffers from bugs. For example, hitting notes in the same column consecutively or pressing two buttons at the same time often just doesn't register, no matter which keys you use on your keyboard. Also, to start a new song pack in a new game location, you have to go back to your Windows desktop and reopen the game window, which can make the song start too early and increase the chance of losing, especially on higher difficulty. Locking the frame rate at 60 FPS as an intentional setting doesn’t actually fix the issue.
But still, Santa Rockstar will be great for fans of Christmas and New Year, and for anyone who gets a mood boost from music and a festive vibe. It’s a bummer that the game doesn’t have Steam Cloud support or achievements, and finishing it on normal difficulty only takes about two hours.
