About
Shotgun Legend is an action role-playing game that aims to recreate the charm of a classic console game. Yes, one look and it's clear which one we're talking about if you're old enough to remember. Let's get that out of the way now.
Story:
Eugene stumbles through a portal along with a truck rim. He finds himself in a strange land taken over by an alien race. Armed with his shotgun and an arsenal of alien technology, he must find the rim, as it seems to be his ticket home.
Features:
10 dungeons to explore
8 active items and 8 passive items to collect. 16 in total.
A unique take on multiplayer where an item allows a second player to join in that share their health with yours. Potentially increasing damage dealt, but damage taken as well.
Minimal hand-holding. Relive that old school feeling of having to figure out where to go and what to do on your own.
Eventually dual wield shotguns!

It's a cool clone of Zelda 1 on NES that's mostly plagued with some bad navigation and coding issues that don't ruin the game but make it more annoying. The sheer number of different abilities you pick up combined with the variety of different enemies you have to dispatch makes it for a fun experience. It's also pretty rough around the edges, with some really stupid game design elements that may be more restrictive of the engine or software the creator is using than anything else. Some dungeons will let you progress to the end and then present a barrier that forces you to leave and come back, which is super annoying. The final linear dungeon crawl and final boss are the best parts of the game because the game works better as a frenetic shooter than a puzzle game, especially since the puzzles are so easy. But then there are also some extra difficulties and a "permadeath mode" that probably no one will even play and I wonder why the experience wasn't streamlined more into a coherent core game instead of trying to be everything all at once.
This is a highly entertaining retro pixel-style game with a wealth of weapons. The gameplay varies according to individual preferences, and there are diverse exploration elements. When switching map areas, you need to be particularly careful of door-opening traps, and some bosses are quite challenging. Additionally, I hate monsters that throw flying knives the most! Also, why does the NPC's counterattack seem so intense when I accidentally hit them!
Eugene found himself in a deadly battle with aliens and the risen dead. His goal is to find the rim of the truck. This is the only way he can return home.

Shotgun Legend is a charming indie action role-playing game developed by Jonathan Tindell and published by Wastebasket Games that proudly embraces its retro roots while adding its own personality and modern conveniences. From the moment it begins, the game establishes a lighthearted and slightly absurd tone, casting the player as an ordinary man unexpectedly pulled into a strange world through a mysterious portal, accompanied by an object as mundane as a truck rim that somehow becomes central to his journey. This quirky setup immediately sets expectations for an adventure that values fun, exploration, and mechanical satisfaction over epic storytelling. Gameplay unfolds from a top-down perspective that will feel instantly familiar to fans of classic action RPGs. Movement and combat are responsive and deliberate, emphasizing positioning, timing, and awareness of enemy patterns. The titular shotgun is the core of the experience, offering powerful, close-range attacks that feel impactful and satisfying. As the game progresses, the arsenal expands through upgrades and special items, allowing players to increase damage output, modify how shots behave, or even dual-wield shotguns for overwhelming firepower. These upgrades give combat a steady sense of growth without overwhelming players with overly complex systems. Exploration is a major focus, and the world is designed to encourage curiosity rather than direct guidance. The map is interconnected and non-linear, with multiple paths opening up as new abilities and tools are acquired. Dungeons are scattered throughout the world, each with its own layout, enemies, and puzzles that require careful observation rather than brute force. Progress often depends on recognizing environmental clues or revisiting earlier areas with newly unlocked items, rewarding players who enjoy piecing together progression organically. This old-school approach can occasionally lead to moments of uncertainty, but it also recreates the satisfaction of discovery that defined many classic adventure games. Combat encounters strike a balance between accessibility and challenge. Enemies are straightforward in concept but require attention, as careless movement can quickly lead to taking damage. Boss fights emphasize pattern recognition and positioning, testing the player’s understanding of mechanics rather than reflex speed alone. While some encounters can feel punishing, the game avoids excessive frustration by offering forgiving checkpoints that keep momentum intact. Death feels like a lesson rather than a setback, encouraging experimentation and persistence. One of the more distinctive features of Shotgun Legend is its local cooperative mode, which adds an interesting twist to the traditional formula. Instead of introducing a completely separate character, the second player shares the same health pool, forcing both players to coordinate and play cautiously. This shared risk keeps tension high and prevents the game from becoming trivial in co-op, while still offering the joy of tackling dungeons and battles together. It’s a simple but clever design choice that reinforces teamwork and communication. Visually, the game adopts a colorful pixel art style that feels intentionally nostalgic without being overly derivative. Environments are readable and varied enough to distinguish different regions, and character sprites convey personality through simple but effective animations. While the art is not lavish, it complements the gameplay well and reinforces the game’s retro charm. The soundtrack supports the adventure with energetic and atmospheric tracks that suit exploration and combat, even if the overall musical variety is somewhat limited. In terms of pacing, Shotgun Legend maintains a steady rhythm that alternates between exploration, combat, and dungeon crawling. The game does not overstay its welcome, offering a compact experience that respects the player’s time while still providing a sense of progression and accomplishment. It is not a sprawling epic, but rather a focused adventure that delivers consistent enjoyment from start to finish. Shotgun Legend ultimately succeeds because it understands exactly what it wants to be. It does not attempt to modernize every aspect of the action RPG formula or overwhelm players with narrative ambition. Instead, it refines familiar ideas with thoughtful design choices, responsive controls, and a playful tone. For players who appreciate classic top-down adventures and enjoy discovering secrets, upgrading weapons, and blasting through enemies with a trusty shotgun, it offers a satisfying and memorable experience that feels both nostalgic and confidently its own.
