Inspired by “shmups” and shadows, Shmadow is a modern twin-stick side-scroller that nods to retro arcade gameplay. Use your light to blast through your enemies, unlock new powers, and defeat bosses before the darkness extinguishes you.

10 years ago, I left this review for Shmadow on Steam: > Controls are a complete mess. Impossible to work on a keyboard, and downright useless on a Logitech controller. Time to set the record straight. Back in 2015, controller support on PC was kind of a mess. XInput wasn’t universally adopted yet, and my old 2008 Logitech pad just didn’t play nice. That wasn’t the developer’s fault—it was the era. Now, a decade later, I’ve come back to Shmadow—this time on keyboard and mouse—and I finally get what the dev was aiming for. It’s a strange little spin on the shoot-’em-up formula: minimalist visuals, stark contrast, and gameplay that messes with your perception. It feels like your eyes are part of the challenge, like the background itself wants to swallow you. Is it perfect? Not even close. It’s rough around the edges and lacks some polish, but I respect what it’s trying to do. The developer built something unique that runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux, on hardware so low-spec it’s practically a toaster. And the fact that it’s Steam Deck verified now? That matters to me. Visually, it’s barebones—maybe too barebones—but it fits the concept. Function over flash. The soundtrack, though, absolutely slaps. At first it feels like generic Euro-disco filler, but give it time—it settles into this hypnotic, soulful rhythm that just works. Shmadow isn’t something I’ll sink hours into. It’s an arcade burst kind of game—quick, stylish, and over before you know it. And that’s okay. It never wanted to be anything else.

Tags: Shootemup & Bullet Hell Additional Tags: Delete Local Content & Remove from Library TLDR: Design Flaws. Limited FOV type gameplay. Must use firing to light up screen as well as defend yourself. Many cheap deaths, luck, and going in blind. No matter how good I get at a game I will never be able to see in the dark. Smadow limits your FOV to a tiny area around your protag and everything else is pitch black other than bullets. Then it spawns a bunch of black orbs that are basically invisible in the black grainy low resolution soup. Occasionally you get to fight a red dot boss. Your protag a ball of light shrinks when hurt which diminishes his hitbox but because of the aforementionned problems with FOV and invisible enemies it does not matter. The moment a boss shows up he becomes the main target, your gun can no longer light the rest of the screen to warn you of incoming danger, you need to dodge the boss spellcards and inevitably run into danger no matter how big your hitbox is. Even if you did see the black dot in time around your protag you are left with next to no reaction time to change your aim towards it. The game had little to no sound effects, the minimalistic sprites looked grainy and cheap and the whole monochromatic thing with red foes was not even given a lacquer of polish. It just feels like a flash game. Your protag autofires which removes even more of the agency, interactivity and impression of control the player seeks to establish in these kinds of games that require a high degree of mastery and perserverance. Redeeming Qualities: Cool Music Tracks Xbox 360 pad works great Controls and aiming seemed alright

Great game, highly recommended!
Sometimes a dev doesn't need a team of gfx designers. to help bring a game idea thru to an excellent game. This is [strike]that time[/strike] one of those times. Hella fun. No makeup or gold chains.
