I really wanted to like this game but it's just not for me. I'm a fan of Persona 5, so I was looking forward to this game. However, even though I enjoyed the combat system, the lack of an engaging story or interesting characters makes the game unenjoyable for me. If you're looking for a game with good strategical depth and interesting fusion mechanics, this is it. If not, then skip this game.

The Persona 5 Royal of SMT5. Much better gameplay, somewhat better story.
Picked this up after playing through P3R, P4 Golden and P5 because I ended up really enjoying the battle systems in those games, but felt like the difficulty level in Persona never really forced me to engage with them all that much. Glad that I did, because the challenge and added build flexibility in SMT feels pretty much perfect for someone coming fresh out of Persona itching for something in the same vein but with more involved combat. Only complaints so far are that the map kinda sucks to use (the top-down "drone" view never zooms out far enough and the fast travel map is *too* zoomed out and packed with overlapping icons) and the open world the game uses isn't as interesting as it could've been if it had, like, dungeons or something. Don't find the writing to be anything phenomenal but I am digging the darker theme that SMT goes for, as well. Excited to go and try Nocturne after this. Oh yeah, and the soundtrack is awesome.
