Overview

She’s Leaving is a first-person adventure that features forensic investigation and hide-and-seek with an enemy that’s lurking within the house. Armed with a taser and a camera, we must shed light on what happened to its owner. Because we are definitely not alone, we must run and hide from our stalker to survive. Having elements that remind us of Resident Evil and Condemned, this adventure is a very good choice despite some flaws in its story.

Story

Charlie is a forensic detective policeman that has currently accepted an invitation to investigate the abandoned, now turned into an attraction, Haywood Manor. Her ladyship has been reported missing, with claims that she may or may not have ever left her home. Entering the outskirts of the manor, he can witness relics and monuments of a past era. Upon unlocking the front gate and entering the forgotten house, he quickly realizes he’s not alone…

Gameplay

The first chapter takes us to the outskirts of the residence, now a forgotten land. We cannot use our tools yet, and there is no real danger. This chapter is only a brief introduction to the game’s lore. Your task is to find the key to unlock the front gate of the manor’s entrance. Once inside, the real game begins. You are equipped with a taser and a camera, both for solving puzzles and the former for self-defense. The taser can only hold one charge of electrical shot before it needs to be reloaded. It also includes an ultraviolet flashlight, which is used to find blood prints hidden in certain areas. Our camera is used with a tripod to take better pictures, and then we analyze those from our deduction. In certain rooms of the manor it will also be used to save our game.

Bugs Found

• A lot of the props, walls, and the like here are under low graphical quality and blurred. It seems it's irrelevant to any graphic setting. If the page document that is held when we are analyzing a blood print is intended to be readable, then it’s blurred, and nothing can be made out of it. • When save scumming (reloading after choosing the wrong answer), sometimes the walkie-talkie icon is being displayed, and you cannot interact with anything because it doesn’t go away. Reloading the same game again will fix it.

Audio & Graphics

The soundtrack truly captures the essence of the classic Resident Evil games. The atmosphere is so quiet inside that you can only hear the clock’s ticking (which it seems is connected to your operative system’s clock) and the enemy’s footsteps. Despite the materials being rendered in low graphical quality, it didn’t bother me a lot.

Pros & Cons

Pros-
• An action adventure that can be matched with the classics. • Good rewarding puzzles. • Great soundtrack.
Cons-
• Blurred low quality graphics in a lot of areas. • The stalker is not very threatening if I go stealth all the time.
Rating: 7/10 Sadly, we are not Leon. Surprisingly solid short horror game, honestly had a great time with this. You can tell the effort that went into it. And for the price? 100% recommend if you like horror games. I thought the story was cleverly written, a few twists and turns genuinely surprised me. The forensic analysis sections were a breath of fresh air and I honestly wish they explored that mechanic a bit more. Gunplay and movement felt snappy and intuitive. Didn’t even realise until after finishing it how small the dev team actually is. For a first project, the visuals, atmosphere and soundtrack are genuinely great. Performance was solid too. Worth the purchase.
Bought this game when i was drunk thinking it was another horror walking sim type game with lots of jump scares/scary atmosphere. I was completely wrong. I played it and mid way through realized it wasnt what i was looking for but damn was it good. Cool little game. Give it a shot. Worth every penny.
I think the atmosphere of this game is incredibly spot on. It's dark and gritty, yet breathtakingly stunning. I picked this game up because I was browsing the Steam Store recently and decided to investigate once I saw this. I was immediately pulled in by the soundtrack on the trailer here, trying to Shazam it to no avail and decided to figure out what the song was... Turns out, all original work for this game... WHAT!? But it's so good, you'd think this came from a massive studio! OK, ya know what? If they can produce a soundtrack that good, I thought... I have to see what kind of game they can create. I was not disappointed. I have barely researched this, but the strong Welsh influence within it has blown me away, too. The gameplay is very simplistic and cutscenes are barely animated, but that doesn't take much away from it's incredibly well written story, fairly engaging game loop and the astonishing atmosphere of this game. I have been left so impressed with the value here. I can't say it's a super amazing absolute must play, but what is here, at this price, is more than worth checking out if you like atmospheric thriller style games. There were some very interesting plot twists throughout and the credit song hits so perfectly that I found this to be engaging from start to finish as I explored absolutely everywhere I could with very few blemishes to spoil the experience. Even the voice acting was incredibly well performed! I never write reviews, but this studio more than deserves the recognition for what they have achieved here.
★★★★☆ A delightful murder mystery dinner theatre experience without the dinner. I was impressed with the amount of beautiful environments that were explorable. The length is perfect if you're looking for a game to finish in one session. The writing was executed well by the voice actors, though I do feel like there could have been more substance to the story. I also wish we got to do more forensic detective work. I look forward to what these devs come up with in the future!
I rarely write reviews for games here, but there's something about this game that compels me to. I remember seeing the first announcement trailer for She's Leaving earlier this year, and my immediate thought was "Leon S. Kennedy??" followed by an immediate interest as some of the forensics gameplay was showed. I'm a sucker for investigative thrillers/mysteries where you do detective work, so I was waiting eagerly for this game. After finishing it, I can say that I'm happy with the end result! I think the game's biggest strength is its atmosphere. I was surprised how charmed I was by some of the serene moments too, especially the intro as you traverse the grounds, searching for a way into the manor as a blizzard billows around you. There were many moments I stopped and just looked around at the scenery, it's really beautiful, and there's some great setpieces and shot composition. Being a horror game/thriller, the halls of House Haywood are claustrophobic corridors that stretch into pitch black, mechanical thrums and twangs ringing out as the lighting system fails and backup generators cycle power into rooms on an endless, futile loop. There were many times my heart leaped as I confused the sound of a breaker flipping in the next room for footsteps and vice versa. There was a lot of love put into crafting this dense atmosphere, and it kept me anxious the whole game, but especially in the first half. The Assailant (the pursuer enemy that stalks you through the halls) is about what you'd expect from a stalker-type enemy. He's very barebones mechanically, but I never had any jankiness with his behavior and he delivered on scaring me more than a few times. The puzzles were standard faire, finding keys to unlock doors to find codes to unlock safes to find more keys, classic horror game stuff. My favorite puzzle was one involving counting a certain number of items in a room, and the anxiety of the game and that excellent atmosphere had me checking over my shoulder constantly. The story was good, and I especially liked the cutscenes. The presentation has an air of somber pensiveness and beauty that it almost contrasts the oppressive feeling the rest of the game has. The tone and presentation reminded me a lot of the pre-rendered cutscenes in Silent Hill 1 and 2, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if that was a direct inspiration. I really appreciated how the gameplay feels direct, purposeful, matter-of-fact, and the cutscenes almost feel like a dream. Each one having more to interpret than our goal-oriented motivation during gameplay. This was an especially smart move as the devs opted to be very restrained on how much they outright say. I don't think the story is hard to figure out, I predicted several things almost right from the start, but you can tell they believed in their vision and respected the audience because the game doesn't try to overly obscure its own narrative, nor does it try to present its twists as earth-shattering revelations. There's a quiet resignation to it all that really worked in its favor. All this being said, there were a few aspects where I feel like it did fall short. This could be on my end, but many textures in the game didn't load properly. particularly some books in the entrance room of House Haywood, and many of the signs on the doors throughout the house failed to render and made the writing inscrutable. There were a few moments where audio desynced from the video during cutscenes. Luckily this only happened twice, and early on, but it was definitely jarring. In terms of gameplay, the first section (the forensics stuff) was by far the most fun, and that's where the gameplay and atmosphere felt the most harmonious. Later sections ended up feeling a bit more like a walking sim with light gameplay moments (which isn't a dig, I love walking sims, and I felt engaged the whole time). Additionally, I actually wasn't a fan of how much taser ammo respawned. My tension and excitement were the highest at the very beginning, as I weighed keeping my one taser pack to defend myself if I was spotted by the Assailant, or use it on a breaker box to unlock a door to explore somewhere new. That interplay and resource scarcity skyrocketed my fear, and that's where the excellent atmosphere and environment design shined the most in tandem with the gameplay. As I used ammo and saw more ammo appear where it hadn't been before, some of my anxiety went away, but I understood having a safeguard to prevent softlocking. But what really broke my immersion was having NEW ammo packs reappear in the exact same spot I had picked one up before. Having them spawn in new places kept some of my suspension of disbelief intact, but the latter just made me laugh and wonder if the Assailant was being a sweetheart and leaving out some taser ammo for his new cop friend lol. The story overall, for me, felt like an extremely strong foundation accompanied by strong standout moments in the cutscenes. But I think the issue was that, especially in the second half of the game, it felt like the there was less time for each story beat to breathe. I think the narrative would have really benefitted from some extra length in between some of the big events, more time for the player to chew on the new information presented. Also, I was a little bummed they didn't commit harder with the ending. I won't be specific so as not to spoil the plot, but I felt like shying away from showing something on-screen at the end made me feel a bit disconnected from our protagonist and the emotions he's displaying in those moments. I wanted to feel those emotions alongside him, but the lack of commitment there took away from the impact for me. Overall, I liked She's Leaving quite a bit. There were some issues here and there, but I think those were, for the most part, in due to budget and manpower limitations. This game's quality is insane for how small the dev team is, and they should be really proud of what they've accomplished. This game has the bones of something really good, and I think the devs have an extremely good game inside of them, and I think that shines through the cracks of She's Leaving. I think that's what compels me to write this lengthy review. There's a passion I could clearly feel the entire runtime, and I want to support this team for this game and their future endeavors. I can't wait to play whatever you make next!
I watched a full gameplay walkthrough and loved it so much that bought my own copy. The story, graphics, performance, and voice acting is top notch. My only gripe with it is that most of the gameplay revolves around finding keys to doors which I found a bit repetitive but still, for an indie game it blew my mind.
Loved this game. The atmosphere was haunting, the tension was great and the story was a perfect mystery with a satisfying end. Gameplay was fun and easy to get the hang of. Loved the idea of investigating blood spatter patterns, very unique. Overall very enjoyable would 100% recommend
Hi!
