Story & Setting: You play a man desperate to find a legendary bottle of wine rumored to cure a deadly plague. Noble goal, right? The only problem: the city you’re searching is completely abandoned... except for the one thing that isn’t. The setting blends Mediterranean postcard beauty with silent decay. Think coastal Spain if it had been hit with a supernatural apocalypse and then left to ferment. The world feels lived-in, empty, and cursed all at once. You’re surrounded by beauty, but the dread creeps in like the humidity slow, quiet, and unbearable. There’s lore scattered throughout for those who want to dig, but it never gets in the way of the pacing. Environmental storytelling is strong here, rusty wine casks, broken apartments, abandoned celebrations all hint at something that went horribly wrong. Gameplay: This is a horror game with no combat, and it doesn't pretend otherwise. You’ll be solving light environmental puzzles, unlocking pathways, platforming through decaying structures, and occasionally sprinting for your life when the game decides to remind you that you’re not alone. The loop is simple but satisfying: Explore beautiful ruins Read creepy notes Hear something behind you Panic Die Respawn, try again, probably still panic Puzzle design is logical but occasionally gets a bit too “where do I go now?” not broken, but expect the occasional frustrating backtrack. The game’s strongest moments come when it tightens its grip and throws you into a chase or scripted scare after lulling you into a false sense of safety. The Stalker: Ah yes, him. The pursuer. The wine wraith. The guy who bursts through walls like the Kool-Aid Man’s evil cousin. He’s terrifying the first few times, and he shows up just enough to keep you guessing. His appearances are mostly scripted, which keeps the game fair but still unnerving. There’s always the creeping dread that something might be following you, even when it’s not. It’s horror by suggestion and it works. Also, the way he screams like a tortured kettle? Nightmares. Visuals & Presentation: This game punches way above its indie weight class in terms of visuals. The contrast between sunlit balconies and dark, oppressive interiors gives every transition tension. The warm lighting feels almost weaponized comfort turned cruel. Some areas feel like they came out of a high-budget walking sim, while others nail the claustrophobia of older horror titles like Penumbra or SOMA. It’s an artistic mash-up of beauty and ruin and somehow it works. Sound Design: Bring headphones. Seriously. The audio design elevates everything. Distant footsteps, creaking wood, ghostly whispers they all combine to make you question whether that sound came from the game or your actual hallway. When the stalker appears, the soundtrack swells in a way that turns your calm exploration into instant fight-or-flight chaos (minus the "fight"). Music is atmospheric, understated, and haunting in the best way. You’ll remember more about how this game felt and sounded than you will about the specifics of any one chase scene. Performance: It runs solidly for an indie title, even on mid-range rigs. Some texture pop-in and lighting bugs here and there, but nothing immersion-breaking. Load times are fast, and checkpoints are generous a lifesaver when your 10th panicked death sends you diving into the menu to reconfigure your life choices. Final Thoughts: HORROR TALES: The Wine is a strange, eerie little gem. It doesn’t rely on gore or jump scare spam. Instead, it creates dread through setting, sound, and pacing. It’s not a long game (maybe 3-5 hours), but it sticks with you like the echo of footsteps in an empty corridor. It’s an ambitious solo-developed project with clear love for the horror genre and an eye for presentation. Sure, it's a bit rough in spots, and the gameplay won’t be for everyone, but if you want a short, unique, and visually striking horror trip with Mediterranean flair… this is worth uncorking. Verdict: 7.5/10 – Unique, tense, and quietly terrifying. Like sipping vintage horror with a shot of “Oh god, what’s behind me?”
The Wine is a pretty disappointing game, to be honest. I think the story concept is solid, but the delivery is terrible. The Visuals and environments are great, even the level design is good, but the actual gameplay in those spaces is terrible - it amounts to wandering around until you can find a combination, wandering around until you find a door, or running from a jump scare enemy. I think that's really what got me; there is no organic nature to the enemies, they just appear in the hallways suddenly and attack you while you clunky-controls your way away with stamina that lasts 0.03 seconds. Considering I was about 1/3rd of the way through the game, I didn't see that changing. Unfortunately, this makes The Wine more frustrating than fun and I don't think it's worth the time.
