Shantae: Risky's Revenge - Director's Cut

pretty good game tbh, short and simple.

Awesome game. Really Underrated Franchise imo. I think there was a lot of inspiration for the Latest Mario Game.

this game is very short, it takes about 2-4 hours to beat it on average when other Shantae games are longer. But you know, it's a Shantae game, so it's pretty good at worst. Risky's Revenge improves a lot from the original GBC game (which I can't review 'cause the remastered is available only for 8th/9th console generation). The animal transformations while only 3 are so much better to get used with and the writing is also better and it's where the series' humor starts to get better. My biggest problem with this game is how short it is, though I can't blame WayFoward for this since this game was initially a DSi title and the file size limit forced the devs to chop down a lot of content, which ended up being used for Pirate's Curse. But overall, Risky's Revenge is a short yet lovable metroidvania, I wish I could recommend new fans to start with this game if it wasn't for its short playthrough but I'd still recommend it if you're searching for a short yet fun metroidvania.

RIsky's Revenge was originally planned as part of a 3 episode release by WayForward that was changed to to a standalone release, landing on the Nintendo DSI first before being ported to other systems. While it took some time, the port to PC is a near perfect conversion of the DSI controls, minus the slight awkwardness of the inventory screen and map. Shantae only has 3 transformations this time around but the game puts them to good use for when you unlock them and her hair whipping attack is still as satisfying as ever. The music is phenomenal and the difficulty keeps you on your toes without feeling unfair through out the game. A good metroidvania style game and a great entry to the Shantae series as well.

The game I used to break in my new ROG. Ignore the playtime, I sunk less than half the time into it than it says due to sleep mode. Charming cast, pixel art and dialogue help make an otherwise unengaging adventure worthwhile. Being my first Shantae, I am hoping that the constant enemy spam and bizarre level layout improves, as I had to really push myself to get to the end after all the fairly repetitive fetch quests near the end. Short experience otherwise and looking forward to the sequel. Rottytops is my impossible standard to which all shall be measured
