Short version: 79%
Wrath continues the political thriller that was set up in the first episode of this four-part point ‘n’ click series. While the episode tries to tell us more about its cast of characters, it also came at the cost of the plot not really moving too much from where we left off.
Long version:
Episodic adventure games can be a little risky to buy, but in the case of Shadows on the Vatican, we can always say that the premise is good enough to invest in the series. The story’s second Act, Wrath, starts right off where Greed ended: a female assassin called Sylvia literally drops into the life of our ex-priest protagonist, James, so they can—reluctantly—join forces against their unknown foes. While the store description really tries to sell Sylvia as the new lead, in reality she is only in a secondary support role. The game still mostly follows the investigation of James, as he slowly discovers that maybe the financial crime he is trying to get the bottom of leads deeper than to the bowels of the Roman Mafia. How deep? We only learn a little bit, since the plot is a lot thinner this time around, putting more focus on smaller point ‘n’ click puzzle segments and the cast. I have to admit, it was nice to know a little bit more about the characters, but I hope that the story will finally start to pick up in the third quarter; because as of now, we are still just setting up the promise of a thriller without most of the actual thriller itself.
The second part of the series Shadows on the Vatican. The story picks up from where we've left it in the first game. Silvia now is targeted by someone and has to be dead. Being the strong girl she is, instead of giving up, she picked up the trail to find out who is behind the attempt of her assassination, James got mixed up in all of this, and he still wants to know who was after his friend.. can he and Silvia work together? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2930941182 Just as enjoyable as the previous game, the gameplay is still the same, and the puzzles are good, a couple of them were difficult to figure out. The soundtrack is great, and the theme music is still amazing even without the vocals. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2930938529 There are a couple of new areas along with the previous ones, you can fast travel to them as you progress into the game. The artwork is still the same, with no improvement. You can control both characters in some of the scenes in this game, alternating between them which is quite fun. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2930940843 Pros: +Interesting story. +Excellent writing. +Interesting characters +Beautiful soundtracks. (Especially the main menu theme) +Good puzzles. +Alternate controlling James and Silvia. +Manual save. +Steam achievements. Cons: -Dated characters look. The third part is still in development, I can't wait to continue the journey and learn more about the story. This series is recommended to P&C lovers. Brilliant little game, best adventure experience in years and very moderately priced. My only concern for this series is the development rate. The devs seems to go for a bi-yearly release cycle, and that is a long wait for these 3-4 hour chunks of greatness, it also means that we have to wait a long time for the conclusive fourth episode.
The second in the series and having enjoyed the first probably a year ago I'm glad to see act 2 arrive on steam and continue. After a brief synopsis of act 1 the game picks up right where the first left off. Like the first its all fully voice acted and overall done well. Only on a couple occasion did I think it was slightly over the top but even then it somehow seemed to fit with the comic style and added to the charm. Some areas and characters carry over from act 1 along with some new. The environments are nice clean quality HD rendered scenes though somewhat low polygon character models and sometimes little slow animations are not as nice but by no means an issue. Although the faces can sometimes appear creepy :). Being a point & Click the controls are simple and effective. Left-click interact & right-click look/examine is basically all you need to get by and you can press space to highlight spots or objects to interact with. Works great and including the ability to double click to skip to other screens/areas saves the games from ever feeling sluggish. My run-through came out around the 3 hours mark , roughly similar to my playtime with act 1, and I didn't really get stuck at any points. I find it hard to give any kind of recommendation either way being only 1 part of a series. My opinions and experience is still only based only on a part of the whole (half if include act 1) but I've enjoyed this and the first act so far and I am eager to play the next instalments so they must be doing something right. This was another good 'part' of what I hope will be a good complete whole and so far I find the story and characters intriguing and gripping. Bring on the next act.
A Story Driven Point & Click Investigation Discovery Game
https://youtu.be/qkBlqegAN5A + An interesting story and unraveling plot + A mix of comic style cutscenes, and a well created 3D world + Lots of character driven dialogue + Dialogue choices + Figuring out what to do next was fun and somewhat challenging - The voice acting could improve in some areas - Somewhat vague story-telling issues especially in the beginning (It was hard to tell what exactly happened at the beginning of the game...
it seems like your character was out to kill a guy (priest) but while getting to him a car almost ran into her, and that car happened to be another hitman going after the priest, so instead of killing the priest your character decides to protect him by killing the other hitman, but somehow during this like 5 second timeframe, the priest stole your gun and hid it under his pillow "hours ago".... I was just scratching my head a lot)
- The walking animation is extremely slow - The background story is pretty confusing for new players of the series - It's hard to tell what to do during some parts, and sometimes the solution seems pretty strange and unlikely. Overall it's a pretty good point & click game with an interesting story and characters.
I will tell the same thing that I told for act I. The game is very good. I enjoy playing it. It's about 4 hours to play. It's classic adventure game with logical puzzles. The puzzles are not too hard, but just hard enough. The ambient music is awsome, I love music in the capena church. The actor voices are good enough. The story is great and good implemented with puzzles. You can read some books to know more about the story. The dialogs are good and classic written. I love the inventory. Its easy and functional. If you try to give something to someone and it's not correctly, then it appears red x in inventory, cool staff.
F$ck!
This is a review of Shadows on the Vatican Acts I and II, as I find them inseparable. This series has quickly become my game of the year, even playing it after so long, and right on time before the release of Act III. What does such a late release mean? This is not an indication of laziness. Quite the contrary: that can mean only one thing. This is a work of love, of passion, of huge investment in time and resources because this story WANTS to be told, and HAS to be experienced. This is a story beloved to the producers and storytellers, so much so that they have battled many an obstacle in these years to make it happen. This is a game that wants ITS VOICE to be heard. As you load the game and the title screen appears, you are treated to one of most sublime game soundtracks I have ever heard. I mean Lara Croft’s theme in the original Tomb Raider level of epic. The music in Shadows is simply jaw dropping. I have the full OST in my playlist and I often listen to it, alongside Hans Zimmer, Dan Gibson, Carmina, Bach. You can find the full OST on Youtube as well (and I recommend listening to the track "To Silvia"). Let’s talk about the story and dialogues. Inspired by the essay "In nome di Dio", Shadows on the Vatican is a thrill-filled story full of intrigue, mystery and some of the most deep and memorable characters I have ever met in a video game. James Murphy and Silvia are well rounded and beautifully designed — seriously, the comics-style, hand drawn characters are heart-stopping beautiful — and they have a deep personality. The plot will capture you and drag you through the two acts, leaving you wanting for more. There are tons of historical facts, trivia about Rome, the Vatican… there is so much to learn! One of the best parts of this game are the dialogues, the thoughts of the characters, their motivations, their shady past and uncertain future. Every character evolves through the story and I can’t wait to see where the next two acts will take us. Puzzles and gameplay are classic, as one can expect from a point and click adventure game. There are inventory based puzzles, riddles, as well as some more difficult puzzles based on reading, numbers and deep thought. Some of them may be a tad too difficult, so don’t feel too bad if you have to check a walkthrough once or twice. It’s worth it! However, I also found some of the most fun, original and quirky puzzles as well, winking and giving a nod to typical cliches of point and click games and turning them around for the fun of it. In this respect, there are TONS of easter eggs, funny achievements, references to the world of gaming, and to other games developed by other software houses. In my opinion, the only reason why we don’t see a flood of overwhelmingly positive reviews is the fact that some players are reluctant to give it a chance before the four episodes come out. That is exactly the opposite of what we should do, as it is with our support NOW that can make a new act possible, that energies and budget can be allocated to the telling of this story. Last but not least, let’s talk about the elephant in the room: the graphics. Not the comics-style drawings of the characters, but the 3D backgrounds and character models. Yes, the graphics is a bit rigid, and can feel outdated, even though it NEVER for a second bothered me or distracted me, and I actually find the backgrounds quite well detailed and well designed. But we must keep this in mind: They were other times, there was no Kickstarter to bump up the budget of an indie company, there was no Steam to advertise, there was no indie trend, and the engines available were quite different. I don’t want to hear it. Of course the graphics is a bit outdated. However, it shouldn’t affect or distract us too much, considering that we live in the era of masterpieces like Undertale and The Return of the Obra Dinn, purposefully reduced to bare bone graphics, for one reason or another. Whatever the case, we should be open-minded and accepting enough to give it a fair chance. If you do it, you will be rewarded with amazing character designs, a jaw dropping soundtrack, memorable character, and a beautifully told story. More of the same just as in Act I. More bad dialogue and voice acting and more stuff that just doesn't make any sense. A bunch of useless talking that is very boring. This one does start moving in a more interesting direction, but it is still so damn boring! And it still repeats everything you do. Explains why there is no ActIII so far as it has now been (as of Nov 2018) 3 years and counting. Thank god it was cheap. Not reccomended at all. Spend you money on a root canal. Will probably hurt less.
Act 3 hasn't been released, and I'm not sure if it will. As long as you're aware of this, and are ok with it, this is a decent value on sale.
