Shadowgrounds: Survivor, developed and published by Frozenbyte, is a top-down action shooter that expands upon the intense gameplay of the original Shadowgrounds. Released in 2007, the game returns players to the icy landscapes of Jupiter's moon Ganymede, where humanity faces a relentless alien threat. Combining fast-paced combat, strategic weapon use, and RPG-style progression, Survivor offers a compelling blend of action and customization that engages both fans of the original and newcomers to the series. Players can choose from three distinct characters: Luke, Bruno, and Isabel, each with unique abilities and strengths. This variety encourages different approaches to combat, as players can tailor their playstyle to their preferred tactics. Adding depth to the experience, the game features an upgrade system that allows players to improve weapons and enhance character attributes. This sense of progression not only rewards continued play but also enables experimentation with different loadouts and strategies, making encounters with alien enemies feel fresh and dynamic. The environments in Shadowgrounds: Survivor are varied and richly detailed. From snow-laden landscapes and frozen tundras to abandoned research facilities and the besieged New Atlantis colony, the levels provide both visual diversity and strategic complexity. Each setting introduces unique obstacles, requiring players to adapt their tactics to environmental hazards. Dynamic effects such as snowstorms and shifting lighting further immerse players in the tense, claustrophobic atmosphere of the alien invasion, heightening the sense of urgency during combat. Combat is at the heart of Survivor, and it delivers a satisfying and intense experience. Players face waves of alien creatures using a broad arsenal that includes pistols, machine guns, flamethrowers, and devastating explosives. New additions like deployable Mechs and Sentry Turrets offer alternative tactical options, allowing players to experiment with defensive setups and offensive strategies. The physics-based mechanics, including destructible environments and realistic weapon effects, add a layer of depth to battles, making each encounter both challenging and rewarding. While the story may not be the primary draw, it provides a strong framework for the action. Players follow the survivors’ struggle to repel the alien threat and escape from the besieged colonies, with the narrative offering context for the missions and encounters. Fully voiced characters and cinematic cutscenes help convey the tension and stakes of the alien invasion, creating a sense of purpose behind the relentless combat. Graphically, Shadowgrounds: Survivor impresses with detailed environments, fluid animations, and dynamic lighting effects. The atmospheric soundtrack complements the gameplay, intensifying the suspense during firefights and exploration. Together, these elements create an immersive experience that keeps players engaged and invested in the action. Though highly enjoyable, the game is not without its limitations. Some players may find the gameplay loop repetitive over extended sessions, and while the weapon variety is broad, combat mechanics remain relatively straightforward compared to modern shooters. However, these minor shortcomings do not detract significantly from the overall experience. In conclusion, Shadowgrounds: Survivor is a polished and engaging action shooter that combines fast-paced combat, strategic depth, and immersive environments. Its diverse characters, upgrade system, and tense encounters with alien forces create a compelling experience for both fans of the original game and newcomers. While it may not reinvent the genre, it delivers a satisfying and entertaining journey through a hostile and vividly realized sci-fi world. Rating: 6/10
While I enjoyed my 5 hours playing it, I find it hard to recommend this game to anyone. If you played Shadowgrounds, and didnt like it, you likely wont like this one as well. It is sliiightly better gameplay vise, because I think some AI got improved slightly, enemy placement were harder to fight off, but that could be because I played on hard difficulty this time instead of normal. If you DID like Shadowgrounds, you might be disappointed by how short it is(yes, 5 hours is the whole singleplayer story, theres a few survival maps but I didnt bother with them, since thats not why I liked original shadowgrounds) And while there was slight improvements in gameplay, there are some downsides too. Like how now you cant use all your weapons from the original game, because some guns didnt make transition into this game(like lightning gun, laser, grenade launcher), and remaining guns that did make the cut(pistol, pulse rifle, flamethrower, shotgun, minigun, rocket launcher, energy sniper rifle) all are divided between 3 playable characters. Two of these characters use pistol, so just like in original game, you'll get bored of using pistol a ton. But this time you WILL be forced to use pistol because sometimes you'll get swarmed by waves after waves of enemies(especially during sniper lady sections). So what ends up happening is that you gonna mostly use pistol, pulse rifle, flamethrower, shotgun, energy sniper rifle. The rest of the weapons are gonna be used very rarely since game rarely gives those guns ammo. Not so fun fact, one of the pistol upgrades is bugged, I think its lock on upgrade, so if you upgrade it, then you cant use pistol anymore... Check forums to avoid it AND this game has only one official boss fight(and it sucks, cus he's dumb). They got replaced with you being surrounded, and get constantly attacked from everywhere. It was kinda fun, but it gets repetitive. If you got this game from shadowgrounds bundle when it went for 90% off, I guess its fine to try, or if you have friends to play co op. But besides that I find little reason to recommend playing it, let alone buying it.
These old school top down shooters were the best. So much fun.

Had a little trouble getting this to run at first, but after installing the legacy PhysX drivers like people say then it ran great. Overall this game is some run-and-gun dumb fun! It borrows a lot from Doom, but the mechanics and perspective are quite unique. I love that it doesn't outstay it's welcome - I can imagine if they had artificially stretched it out then it would have gotten very boring, but the pacing seems just right. One things that's quite a shame is I wish they had polished this a bit more, from the menu screens to a little bit of jankyness in game, I feel like a little more dev time could have made this shine. But that aside, just go have some quick fun with this here and there.
If you haven't played the original shadowgrounds, go buy that on sale. If you are craving more, come back and play this. It's a shorter "story", but it's more of the same dumb fun. Cautious recommendation for me, buy it on sale.
A hardcore game for me in its day. The short game company was compensated for by the difficulty of the fights. Not a bad game for 2007, but the first part was still more intense. Still, I'll give it a positive
