Information / Review English
SGS Okinawa is a strategy/war game developed by Strategy Game Studio.
Gameplay / Story
With the landing on Okinawa in April 1945, the USA wanted to create a base for the invasion of Japan. But the clever and suicidal defense thwarted all plans. The Battle of Okinawa (Allied codename: Operation Iceberg) began on April 1, 1945 with the American invasion of the Japanese island of Okinawa and ended on June 30, 1945. The battle was part of the Pacific War Campaign of World War II. From the Japanese perspective, Okinawa was the last line of defense against an Allied invasion of the main Japanese islands. Accordingly, the Allies planned to use Okinawa for air support of the planned invasion of the main islands. With coordinated suicide attacks by Shimpū-Tokkōtai units, the Japanese naval air force tried to deal a decisive blow to the American Pacific Fleet. The prelude to this battle was the Allied air raids on Kyushu on March 18, 1945. The fighting on Okinawa lasted until June 30 and ended with the conquest of the island by American troops. Over the course of the battle, more than two-thirds of the Japanese defenders died. There were also high losses among the civilian population and on the American side. But it was also the first time Japanese soldiers surrendered in their thousands. The game offers you many different scenarios that give you the options of lightning fast offensives, defensive work to defend your defenses, amphibious assaults, but also air attack options made it into the game. What I liked very much and what is striking is that decisions that affect the economy, industry and production that are involved in the long war have an impact. The different scenarios offer a good variety, regardless of whether they only go for a few laps or several, as each brings its own experiences with it. There are several ways to solve the game's event cards and the different situations, for example solving a situation diplomatically or using military, political or economic means to conquer a territory or make room.
Per
+ part of history + Campaigns, which must be well planned + lets you immerse yourself in wartime + Strategy landscape with brand new card effects + symmetrical resources of the armies + good interface + suitable music + several units are available +Tutorial
cons
- no achievements and trading cards available yet
Conclusion
SGS Okinawa offers you a moving final battle of the Pacific War to be relived. Clear purchase recommendation for those who like history and are interested in it.

Information / Review Deutsch
Another addition to the SGS WW2 games re-enacting Nimitz's island hopping strategy - this SGS Okinawa had me coming back regularly to accomplish one critical task after another, getting a sense of what had to happen historically before Okinawa could become a base for strking against the Japanese home islands. As with SGS Pacific DDay and SGS Operation Downfall, there's amphibious assaults, naval bombardment, the air war, Kamikaze raids, and all the aspects of the ground campaign to deal with, from supply to reinforcements and replacements to proper use of special tactics (represented by card actions and unit capabilities). As with the other SGS games in the Pacific War series, I highly recommend this one.
Pretty easy tp play mechanically although UI is a tad clunky. Would be nice to see where attacks are taking place without having to click in and out of windows. Brush up on unit insignia at the division level or you may never know what divisions you're using. Cheap enough on sale to give the game a try.
I think I have finally found a game that captures the grinding combat that was characteristic of the fighting on Okinawa. I really like the feel, but that does not mean the game is without problems. First, the rules/manual are thin to nonexistent -- the rules website has little specific information on the Okinawa game. Second, the designer is under the delusion that there were Japanese partisans on Okinawa; well into the battle you will find Japanese Boetai and others materializing in the rear areas; I have never heard that such a thing occurred during the battle. Third, I cannot find where to find victory conditions anywhere. So you can imagine my surprise when I lost the game although I had outscored the Japanese computer opponent 97 - 50 (Japanese minor victory)! Finally, the interface is need of a rework. You can zoom-in the map, the aircraft and fleet holding boxes are then not visible. Dragging aircraft / ships to the target area becomes cumbersome. That said. I like the game a lot.
I like this game. It's not my usual fare, as I usually find the Pacific Theater overdone, but SGS/Avalon made this one pretty fun. Marshaling resources and keeping to a timetable can be a challenge for me. In this game it is vital to any kind of success. Would recommend You betcha.
My first experience with the SGS system. I like the system and will buy another game using it. For this battle though it's fairly boring. As the Japanese there's not much to do while you get pounded by the overwhelming force of the U.S. You may win but it doesn't feel like you did anything but the obvious. As the U.S. you also don't get much feel for the actual campaign. Not much strategy involved, you just move toward the objectives you're given. You win just about every fight initially. I was declared the winner once I took the two heavily defended spaces behind the Suri Line. Not sure if that was supposed to happen as there were still many well entrenched Japanese in the Suri Line, some if starred spaces. Not much replay value here but worth the $5 I paid for it.
Takes a little bit to get used to the orders process but it is very similar to board game mechanics. Game turns go pretty fast, don't expect pretty graphics of explosions etc., and it has a card mechanic which seems to be the rage in wargaming right now (which I'm not a huge fan of but it's not a deal breaker). The AI is good, the tutorial is good,
Incredibly challenging to win via points, true sick feeling in my stomach when I have to send Marines and GIs into a giant bunker. A few glitches, but the game quick saves often so I've rarely had anything other than annoyance with it.
