TLDR; I really enjoyed Sergeant Squidley and can't wait to play more. This is a very entertaining and incredibly rich role-playing adventure game. It combines a simple skill system with a large cast of characters and dialogue choices to produce a hugely broad range of outcomes whilst maintaining a light, humorous tone throughout. You play Sergeant Squidley, a down on his luck cop who is pulled from his traffic duties to solve a high profile murder case. It sounds a bit cliche but the characters are so funny and varied that it really has a life of its own. As well as the murder investigation, your ex-wife wants you to reconnect with your son, you're still looking for love and of course your saxophone skills have been getting rusty so you better start making some choices! Each run lasts one in-game week and events happen at specific times so it's impossible to do/see everything in one run but multiple replays are built into the game. Unlike some games I've played where the reruns are just an attempt to milk more out of the game, it's clear they've implemented multiple runs very thoughtfully here and, at least so far, I have had no shortage of motivation to keep playing again to try different things. Every new reason to play comes up organically throughout the game as you are completing your current goals which I think is a lot more interesting than "let's do it again with a different class". Some of my favorite moments in this game were from walking in on a conversation or event with very little context and trying to understand what had just happened. Then on subsequent playthroughs I could focus on those characters more to understand the events that led to that conversation. This is a game that isn't afraid to let you miss out on some things which doesn't just add to the replay value but also deepens the mystery of the plot. It's quite addictive because it feels as if there is no "perfect run" and it really does just end up with what you want to do. I'm still excited by a number of side-plots I've encountered that feel like they could be another whole run unto themselves. Music is really solid and fits the tone and atmosphere. The images of the characters are really expressive and combine with the dialogue to give you a really good sense of their character and add to the laughs. In fact, the old-school art-style is really well realized in general, nothing feels out of place and every item in each room/background has tons of neat little details. If I were to suggest an improvement it could be to add to the already expressive lineup of character's reaction images as a lot of humor can come from seeing a particular character pull a particularly funny face in a given situation. Same for the music, really love what's there but a few tracks get a bit repetitive after a while so a few more tracks or interludes between music would be welcome. But when my only complaints are that I wish there was more of what's already great then I know I've played a solid game. I'm not much closer to solving the mystery but the journey seems more important than the destination with this one. Highly recommended.
Sergeant Squidley: Space Cop! is a hilarious and engaging adventure/rpg game reminiscent of 90s adventure games. The writing is stellar with countless pop culture references and witty characters to keep you entertained. The dialogue options alone warrant multiple playthroughs! Want to be a super cop? Or maybe a loose canon renegade? You totally can! I still need to replay yet again and do nothing more than play the saxophone all week. The art style is endearing and the character design is very fun and apt for each characters unique personality. The dialogue suits each character model perfectly which helps build an immersive world that feels vibrant and alive. NPC's don't feel like cut and paste copies of each other which is a breath of fresh air! Props to the Developer for drawing this game, it must have been painstaking to do! The game while fun is indeed challenging, the answer is not obvious and I genuinely wanted to put effort into solving the case. Balancing your core stats, hunger and energy never feels punishing but can give a sense of urgency at times. Striking the right balance and progressing your goals is immensely satisfying! Overall the writing, art style, game-play mechanics and replay-ability make Sergeant Squidley a must have in my library. Highly recommended! What are you waiting for? Go solve this crime!
Sergeant Squidley is my spirit animal. Right out of the gates I vibed with the comedy and the visuals, which gave me a very nostalgic yet fresh feeling. Really enjoying the pacing . This is really intelligently put together and can really tell that there was care and attention at every step of the way, priced fairly and is super compact for such an intricate and nuanced story with a madcap cast of characters which already has me coming back to try every path previously not taken Would reccomend 10/10
If you like murder mystery and comedy games this one is for you so many different ways to play and so many different outcomes highly recommended 10/10
This is a brilliant game! There's so much to do, I'll definitely be playing again - I know there was stuff I missed this time. Loved the artwork! Great value for money too.
This is a very funny, silly and surprisingly compelling adventure game that has me itching to go back for another try - check it out!
Genuinely amazing game. It's a mix of old school point & click, ttrpg dice rolls, and others game types that I won't spoil. This has an astonishing amount of detail, and it's fun to keep going through again and again.
This game is very funny and extremely clever. The characters are brilliant and the dialogue is so well written. It's a highly entertaining whodunnit and the suspects are plentiful!!! I can't wait to get back to it .
The best detective in down has been murdered, and you've got to figure out the who, what, where, when, and why. You've got one week, and a long list of suspects. Or, you know, don't. You could just get really good at the saxophone, rebuild your relationship with your child, find love, or go totally rogue. The choice(s) are yours to make! There is a whole lot to love about this game. Even though in my playthrough, I sort of lost all my leads, there was still a lot I could mess around and uncover. I can tell there is a complex story underpinning all the silliness, but I love that the option to just... not is right there. This game is a love letter to old-school adventure games, with a healthy dose of choose-your-own-adventure RPG books that love to punish you thrown in. You set your stats, and set about your day, burning precious minutes, money, and resources to figure out what's going on around town, or do almost anything else. I totally beefed it in this first run-through, and I'm not even mad. This game is short enough to get through a loop and try again that as you do it over and over, you can slowly uncover what's really going on. You can also explore a myriad of other opportunities that have nothing to do with the case, and that's just as valid a loop. The writing's cute, the visual design is perfect for what it's going for, and the choices are many. If you want a fun adventure game with legitimate replay value: absolutely check out Sergeant Squidley: Space Cop!
Let's start off by saying that this game is absolutely amazing. The amount of characters that are in this game is just nuts. You get an entire character screen that unlocks slowly through the game, and you get information on each character as you're playing along and you can check it at any time. You can gain relationships, you can even make enemies. But with that being said, the whole point of the game is to solve the murder of your captain Over the course of 7 days. Now in the 7 days you have a lot to. You have to maintain friendships, Maintain work balance and also figure out a murder. It seems like a lot to do in 7 days. But the creator really does a good job at making the game balanced and playable. The amount of pure awesomeness and charm that this game has... Is just.. i can't say anything other than amazing. This is truly an inspiration to the Indie Community. You wanna know how to make good characters? look at this game. With dozens of endings, and hundreds, if not THOUSANDS of different choices will lead you to whatever ending you can imagine. I would not doubt that there are some 'secret' endings that are hard to get. I know which ending I'm going to attempt to do, and once you play the game, I'm sure you'll experiment to see what is possible. Now on the multiple choices thing, you do not have time to check everything. That's just the nature of the game! I think I had around 6 dead ends where I just couldn't figure out what to do, and on other investigation points, I knew exactly what I should do next. I missed....so much. I can't wait to play this a few times and really dive deep into it. 10/10
