it's criminal that this game is a financial flop! the ear and eye candy alone should make it a stand out hit. Obviously no real marketing was done to help sell this game/idea, because this game is so great! Or maybe I'm just old and remember/love games like this and the newer generation doesn't. But I suspect it's the former. I think this game will stand the test of time and people will discover it one day!
This is a reluctant recommendation. I fooled myself into thinking this game would be more than it advertised - somehow I believed it was rogue-like, similar to FTL if done by Star Trek. It's not. The Captain is what it says on the tin: a retro point-and-click adventure game, reminiscent of SpaceQuest from the old days. It's much improved from those days - more user friendly, with multiple ways to finish each scenario and ways to choose which scenarios you want. But it's still an adventure game with a single plot, which limits the replayability. Sure, you can go back and start over and try to get a better result - but once you figure it out, there's nothing left. Can you enjoy this game? Absolutely. It's well done, has humour, and has tons of secrets. It's not the game for me, but that's my own fault. It could very well be the game for YOU.
FTL Meets LucasArts, But the Save System is Stuck in 2006
The way I see it, the creators of this game tried to merge two entirely different genres: an FTL-style roguelite and classic adventure games. Similar to FTL, you whizz through the galaxy, desperately trying to reach Earth before the bad guys do. And just like FTL, you have shops for repairs and upgrades, tactical space battles, and strict travel time constraints. However, where it differs is that on every planet you encounter, you can land and enter the "Adventure game" part of the loop. You get narrative stories, away missions, and choices that directly affect the plot and the specific bonuses you get on that planet. The Good: The Space Combat Hook The space battles in this game are genuinely fun and mechanically solid. You can actually see the enemy strategies in advance, allowing you to select your own counters accordingly. The upgrade loop is satisfying: you can build, buy, and upgrade a variety of weapons. Since there are distinct weapon types and corresponding shields to counter them, it feels highly tactical. Combine that with a steady progression of ship difficulty over time, and you have a pretty great core gameplay loop. The Bad: Welcome back to the PS2 Era Then we get to the adventure portion of the game, and the execution completely falls apart. Away missions have full and partial solutions, which sounds great on paper. The problem? There is no manual "SAVE" option anywhere in the game. In a normal adventure game, you would save before starting a major quest line. That way, you can experiment, see the different narrative outcomes, and choose the path you actually want. But here? No save/load. All your choices are final. If you want to try a different approach, your only option is to start an entirely new game and play all the way back to the same planet. And let's be real: by the time you manage to do that dozens of hours later, you won't even remember what choices you made the first time around. The "Roguelike" Excuse I guess the developers were trying to lean into that "roguelite" identity, where every single playthrough offers a different narrative approach. Unfortunately, that design philosophy completely collapses in a game with an average run time of 18 hours. Instead of feeling like a highly replayable adventure, it just makes the narrative choice elements incredibly frustrating and deeply unsatisfying. Verdict There is absolutely no excuse for checkpoints-instead-of-saves in 2026. This isn't 2006, and we aren't playing on a PlayStation 2. Give us the ability to manual SAVE/LOAD the game whenever we want. Is that really too much to ask?
An absolute hidden gem. It is essentially a whole season and a movie of a good old Star Trek series, where every destination on your journey encompasses an episode - Each a largely self-contained point-click adventure with some pretty clever puzzles, a few very engrossing stories, and probably most impressively, multiple endings that can potentially impact the rest of your story. When you're cruising through space, on the other hand, the game plays like FTL by Subset Games, only it's a beautifully handcrafted story instead of a randomly generated roguelike. The combat is actually really fun once you get the hang of it, and plays more like a puzzle using your wits rather than your reflexes. The game is not too difficult, so don't feel like you really need to savescum too much. You'll probably want to replay the game at least a couple more times to really explore what's really out there. The game even makes it easy for you and lets you skip entire planets if you just want to repeat an outcome you've seen before.
The Captain
👑 Powered by HoI 4 Deu Curators group in German / English 👑⠀⠀⠀

Follow Main group
 Follow Second group
 Follow Third group
To say it clear: For me it is one of the best games of all times.
I got this for the nostalgia factor. Played it for a while and remembered - back in the day - I never really liked point and click adventures. I'd always rather read a good book. So, no, this game is not for me. But if you like point & click, then maybe you'll love it!
This has got to be one of the best point and clicks games ive ever played. And Ive played everything. Plus this has to be the one ive replayed the most. There is just SO MUCH to do in this game, the story is great and the characters are funny as hell. Art is spot on and the music as well. The puzzles are not overlycomplicated but depending the route you choose it can get tricky! and for once, a game in which your actions ACTUALLY HAVE CONSEQUENCES.
Give it an hour to warm up. Its great. Dont expect FTL, expect an adventure with multiple endings and a lot of desicison that will change the outcome. If you want to win battles you need to play like a ruthless Pirate, otherwise you will not have enough firepower. The good guys will fail on this route. "I saved Humanity, but i still failed..." - Feels like i need tpo lay again.
