Sephiria is a top-down action roguelike where you go room to room and descend deeper and deeper floors while collecting artifacts, tablets, and upgrading your starting weapon. Artifacts function somewhat similarly to Risk of Rain 2, they provide an effect that can be as simple as stat increases or it could be an electric crossbow that fights with you. All of your artifacts go into your inventory, which is a grid that fills out your backpack, all artifacts and tablets take up one spot. Artifacts also have a categorization into different synergies, and having so many artifacts of the same synergy will provide you with additional buffs, further enhancing whatever build you're going for. Tablets don't provide any benefit to you directly, instead they provide positives and sometimes negatives to certain slots in your inventory, depending on where they're placed. Each artifact has a number of stars, representing the amount of times they can be upgraded, which further enhances their effect. You can find stations that will let you upgrade artifacts, however it is often far more worthwhile to seek out tablets, as the positives they provide are upgrades to any artifacts in their indicated spots. As you can imagine, once your inventory starts to get full it can be quite the puzzle to figure out the best way to organize everything to get the maximum out of your tablet placements, but I would argue this system is part of what makes the game fun, although it probably isn't something everyone will enjoy. As for the gameplay itself outside of inventory management, movement and attacks feel quite fluid, and the weapon choices allow different playstyles and all have unique skills tied to them, they only have one or two abilities each to keep it from getting too complicated which I think is for the better generally. Outside of that, there's a good bit of meta progression, after each run you'll get sapphires to spend on things like unlocking new starter weapons, getting more talent points to invest into your base stats (which provide their own unique effects upon reaching a certain amount invested, which is neat), more health, more money, more inventory space, starting with a health potion, so on so forth. After a run you can typically unlock multiple things which makes runs feel quite rewarding regardless of success. Some unlocks require a bit of extra doing in that you unlock a quest that you then complete in the town to get something, but the quests are designed to be trivial (for the most part anyway, I did have to look up the final hiding spot in the hide and seek quest lol) so if you don't care for it it's barely an inconvenience and if you do then it's some nice worldbuilding and story stuff. All in all, this game is designed very well, it's easy to pick up but offers a lot of depth for those wanting to optimize their inventories as much as possible and get exactly the synergies they need, but you can also just go all in on one synergy and only take very flexible tablets like foundation and still find success without much inventory management to do (although you will probably have an easier time if you do optimize and solve your inventory puzzle of course). Progression feels rewarding and coincides well with story progression, there's even more systems to make your runs and builds more customizable that I haven't even mentioned like difficulty modifiers, outfits, the wishing well, so on so forth. This game has a lot of stuff in it but everything is incorporated naturally, making the experience very smooth and not confusing. It also offers multiplayer with friends which is quite fun! If you're looking for a new action roguelike to play solo or with friends, this is probably one of if not the best on the market right now. I highly recommend this game at market price.
