Have put around 200 hours into this with friends and members of the community I can definitely say you SHOULD NOT GET THIS GAME! I love this game and the potential it has however the dev and specific community members have ruined it with greed this game having multiple paid dlc and a 20$ price tag for what is essentially a nothing burger that has well over a few hundred thousand dollars put into it is nothing less than greed. I’m not typically the kind of person to be concerned with content release schedules in games however when you make plans and fail to deliver on those still years after and start making paid dlc I find it truly frustrating and honestly insulting. I want to love this game and hope the best for it but nobody NOBODY should buy this!
If you like to farm skins, this is a game for you. If you like new content, this is not the game for you. In 1 year the game had like 2 updates which were not skins. ( an ability of a dragon to raise eggs in their mouth and added some pearls which give you skins or buffs). The game had raised a budget of 500k on kickstarter, I assume 0 to none of those money went into development considering the state of the game.
Going on seven years, this game has barely changed. The devs promised a lot and have hardly delivered, though the game does have potential (though maybe I'm just having a bit of Stockholm Syndrome since its way too late for me to get a refund). The map has had a lot of improvements since launch, but it still feels empty. There's spots where prey spawns, rivers, caves, but nothing that stands out. The addition of a new, larger prey animal (the snapper or something?) is good, especially for the adult stages. However, hunting as a solo juvenile is still a very dangerous experience, to the point it gets frustrating. I would love if there were more points of interest around the map. Maybe waterfalls, hidden caves, spires or very tall trees to fly around as a start. For those like myself who prefer a solo experience, once you're grown, it's kind of an "okay, now what?" situation. Secondly, I think there's too many dragons you have to pay for. Yes, I know you can be nested as any dragon, but I don't want to beg random people to play as a specific kind of dragon. Not everyone is online to roleplay, I like spawning in and surviving. Currently, the Flame Stalker, Shadow Scale, Inferno Ravager, and Brood Watcher are available for free. The Acid Spitter and Blitz Striker are DLC, and the Bioluminescent dragon is exclusive to backers or supporters, I believe. I have no issue with cosmetic DLC like emotes or skins, as they're just that, cosmetic. Paying for specific dragon species is too close to a "pay to win" situation in my opinion. I hope the rest of the dragons are free to play, then a few paid species won't seem like so much of a cash-grab. A way to fix both these problems: you can pay to unlock skins or species immediately, or you could earn some sort of point system via quests (for example: hunt a creature without taking damage, fly for a certain amount of time, hatch another player in your nest). This would give you something to do once your dragon is mature and motivate people to play for longer. The points could be used for skins, species, etc. One of the biggest problems, in my opinion, is false advertising. Considering their promotional video on the storefront notably features the Bioluminescent, Acid Spitter, parts of a map that don't exist, a sand worm and fire elemental that aren't in the game, this feels EXTREMELY misleading. I feel any reasonable person browsing Steam for a new game would assume those are features currently available upon purchase of the game, without additional transactions. Gameplay trailers are supposed to show what the game offers, not what you have to buy on top of everything else. If I had bought the game now and learned of its current state, I would have refunded it and waited until the devs actually made the game they promised to. I understand delays happen and problems arise with every game, but it's constant at this point. Every update has something promised, and ends in "it'll come later." Like the boy who cried wolf, I simply don't believe them anymore. The devs seem more interested in your money than actually making a good game. I can hope they kick everything into gear soon and actually release something worthwhile, but until then, I can't honestly recommend the game.
There is literally nothing to do in this game. Thats right, nothing! You basically hatch, and you're a baby dragon for hours until you can eventually fly. But even then, you're flying in an empty world with nothing to do. No boss fights, no tasks, missions, nothing. This game is a shameless cash grab, DONT BUY!
I've honestly reached the point where I don't even get excited when I see a new patch anymore. Every update seems to introduce another idea that nobody was really asking for, while the features the community has been waiting on for years remain stuck somewhere in the future. Somehow the development direction keeps changing, priorities get shuffled around again, and the finish line moves even farther away. And can we talk about the update quality? It's become normal to expect a patch to be followed by a chain of hotfixes because something inevitably breaks. Instead of taking the time to release something solid, we get an update first and hope the next few hotfixes will sort everything out. The latest patch is just another example of focusing development time on things that were never at the top of the community's wishlist. Meanwhile, Skin Crafting is still nowhere to be found. How long are we supposed to wait? Another decade? At this rate it feels like we'll be retired before it's finally added. Nobody is asking for the development pipeline to be turned upside down every few months. People just want the game to move forward and for promised features to finally arrive. Please stop chasing ideas that nobody has been asking for and start finishing the game people paid for. Listen to your community before there isn't one left. Enough is enough.
Half-baked gameplay loop. There's barely anything to do besides PvP, or breeding for stats that you can't use anywhere in PvE. The devs are putting out cash grab DLC dragons and useless skins instead of finishing their game. On top of everything, a lot of dragon designs feel like rip-offs of popular dragons from other media. The flight mechanic is what attracted me initially. It's great in concept, I like the difficulty of it, but very poorly executed. Works great in a straight line, but any other time it feels like piloting a giant plane instead of a dragon. It is not realistic to how a creature with mobile, flapping, wings would fly; the physics behave like plane physics. Performance is meh. Thunderstorms notoriously tank your FPS. Not worth it, DON'T BUY.
Development of the game is extremely slow, but over the years the game has improved. I have many fond memories in this game and continue to make more. The player base is what keeps the game interesting, with the current lack of things to do.
It's abhorrently optimized and took me about half an hour of troubleshooting (gametime), and about an hour researching how to prevent the game crashing on server load. I deem this 'unplayable' on my system (below 15fps at lowest settings / constant 100% gpu usage / requiring to reduce resolution scale to lowest). I can get Ark: Survival Ascended to run better, but this is just awful.
Such potential, yet such a huge letdown... And you know they are only pumping out constant updates finally becuase steam changed their 12 month rule for devs not pushing updates, and they feared losing money and having a BIG Flag placed on their steam store page letting everyone know this game is probably abandonded. Be Awesome Games, do better, stop making a "Dragon Survival Game" and all your features are about cosmetics and not real gameplay.... Your map is dead, theres little to do, all new players can do is hunt crabs or be killed by the PVP clans that plague official servers, most of the playerbase numbers are false because a lot of the player base run multiple accounts for breeding because of this games janky breeding and paywalled mechanics. Some dragons and skins are forever hidden behind Kickstarter keys that people hoarde and sell in grey markets. OR the devs sell new dragons as "DLC" as a cash grab instead of just being a good team of developers and release new dreagons and content for free for the comunity. OH look new DLC slop, and guess what more cosmetics cuz the game is really lacking in that department right? Do not buy this game, this game was a gift from a psycotic girl i once dated and i only played for a short while. I watched videos on this game for years and hoped it would become something great and, well we all know what direction this game went.... Do better 'BeAwesome Games' cuz yall are anything but awesome...
I Thought it looked interesting, Ran around for 10 minutes as acid spitter dragon, ate the only mushroom I found, poisonous. Found a single spider, attacked it 10 times, Where as it would attack in 3-4 hit swings. I died. Respawned, ran for 5 more minutes never found another shroom or spider. That was enough for me.
