Game Summary:
This is a game where I'd heavily dispute the description tags used to cover it. It's not an RPG or strategy game, it's a point and click game. Seems like a very odd thing to get that wrong. Unfortunately, it's not the only mistake or oversight the game seems to have. I was enjoying the game and story at first, but as I played my way through the game, it just seemed to irk and annoy me.
Pros:
• The game's simple graphics, background music, and plot help frame an interesting story. I do think it's pretty neat that with such a limited color palette, most things are still very clear as to what they are. • I don't know how to describe the music. Ambient doesn't seem right, but calling it a tune or anything else doesn't seem fitting either. It's in the trailer - sort of a jazz/pirate shanty or something? • The use of color to distinguish between the past and present is a simple but effective touch.
Cons:
• While I was playing out a scene from a flashback, I somehow caused a glitch that kept me trapped in that flashback after it was transitioning back to the present, with my character gone from the screen and no ability to interact with anything. No matter how many times I booted the game up afterwards, I was permanently stuck there. I think I was about 60% of the way through the game too. • Certain elements and how you're meant to interact with items is rather bizarre. For instance, the ice cream scoop winds up having multiple uses, as you both dig up sand and tear out a stuffed animal's fluff with it. Said stuffed animal then gets filled with urine and said urine puts out a fire. Could have done the same thing with a water bottle and waiting 30 minutes, without the need to carry a urine sponge on hand. • The father you play as in the very beginning is an atrocious father. Seriously, it's just mind-boggling how horrible he is. Not because he screams or is physically abusive, but his mindset and reaction certainly makes him a trashy person.
Conclusion:
From what I can see in the developer notes, the game has gone through a few patches and fixes because of some issues that arose. I appreciate that they're ironing out some of the kinks, but for a basic point and click game with such minimalistic graphics, I'd hope for better coding. There was also a contest created for anyone who was willing to write out a guide for the game, which I started doing as I played, but I legitimately hit a brick wall with no idea how to progress. Turns out, a stray board over a doorway was what I had missed out on. My main reason for ignoring it is because there are boards just a few inches away covering windows that are described as just boards you can't interact with; why would the board right over the doorway be distinct and be loose instead?! Up 'til that point, I had been able to puzzle my way through the game by interacting and exploring everything, but not finding that tripped me up and had been driving me crazy until I saw the recent guide that got posted. I know I didn't finish the game and am not going to having crashed into that game-ending glitch, but despite liking the story 'til that point there's simply not enough game to warrant an $8 price.
I just finished this game, an amazing dark atmospheric point and click adventure game using pixel arts, I became immersed in the intriguing story, soundtrack is spot on and controls are fluid and responsive.
很难给这款游戏找到一点优点,可能就是解谜有点挑战性了吧。操作别扭,音乐也很吵,加上没有中文支持,剧情上看的也一知半解的。难怪没什么人玩。
Edit: I am pleased to be able to turn my negative review to a positive at this point. As you can see in the comments, the developer is active and responsive. More importantly however, the two notable object bugs (tape, licorice) seem to resolve themselves after leaving and then starting the game back up (with the latter, it took a few attempts to get it to stick). So, with those bugs sorted out, at least enough to effectively complete a playthrough, I see no reason why a person wouldn't try this game out. I think somewhere in the 7.5-8 out of 10 feels right for this one. Edit Close Seek Not a Lighthouse is a pretty decent point and click adventure overall. The story is interesting, the artwork is nice looking, and the music is exceptional. I think the design choices and puzzles were effective overall. However, it does have some issues, most notably the failure of items to appear in your inventory at times, which makes progressing impossible until they actually appear, which might take a couple restarts. I am however at a part of the game where that tactic no longer works and I can't finish gathering the items to make guacamole fish tacos lol. So, retiring this game until/unless somebody has a suggestion that would fix this issue, and since this effectively means the game is broken, at least for me, I can't offer a recommendation. Should that issue be fixed, I will probably revise my review accordingly, but I don't hold out a lot of hope considering the devs claim to make more money on other platforms and aren't, to my knowledge, supporting this game anymore.
