As he reintegrates into Japanese school life, he encounters girls from different grades, clubs, and backgrounds—each struggling with their own quiet doubts or hopes. The VN excels at capturing small but heartfelt moments: exchanging morning greetings, sharing lunches, walking home together, or opening up after a long day. Routes are gentle, warm, and grounded in everyday youth. There is no forced drama—just soft, genuine affection that grows naturally.

[th]🏆Verdict:[/th]

Home Sweet Homecoming is a very pleasant and wholesome romance VN that delivers exactly what it promises: a warm school-life story filled with gentle relationships and HOOKSOFT’s signature soothing atmosphere. Each heroine feels distinct: Emi’s childhood-friend sweetness, Mia’s diligent class-rep charm, Rikako’s shy athletic innocence, Misato’s energetic senpai energy, Yuka’s sheltered ojou-sama sincerity, Rin’s hidden beauty, and Miss Erina’s calm maturity. The first hours focus mainly on dialogue, daily conversations, and simple choices. You listen to classroom talks, hallway rumors, cafeteria gossip, or rooftop chatter about the girls who interest you. After that, you can visit each heroine and talk to her directly, sometimes confronting her about the rumors you heard or choosing to ignore them. The STAND TALK+ rumor system adds small interactive touches that help you feel involved in everyday school life. Among the seven heroines, the number of CGs is not perfectly equal and each route offers different H-scenes. Some heroines have unique positions, such as sixty-nine, while others have more standard variations. Midway through the story, you must choose the girl you truly want to pursue; however, if you didn’t spend enough time with her during the first half, your chances with her in the second part become much lower. Sexual content only appears near the end of each route, with several scenes unlocking once a heroine’s path is secured. Each route has its own atmosphere and emotional tone, making every romance enjoyable and distinct. If you enjoy pure romance VNs with gentle pacing and vanilla H-content, this title is an excellent choice. Just be aware that the genital mosaics are quite noticeable and obscure details enough that some players may find them distracting.
Classic School-Life Romance VN
A gentle school-life romance ADV centered on a protagonist who returns to a Japanese academy after years abroad to reclaim his youth. Rather than complex conflicts or heavy emotional burdens, the story focuses on everyday encounters and conversations woven with care. Even choosing the protagonist’s morning arrival time changes the flow of dialogue, and walking around the campus after school to look for heroines—paired with the action-selection–based “STAND TALK+” system—creates a light mix of time management and roaming that fosters a genuine sense of “attending school.” The charm of the work is supported by multiple heroines with distinct atmospheres: a clingy childhood friend, a serious class representative, a quiet track-and-field girl, a cheerful senior, and even a mature teacher route. Instead of aiming for specific attributes, the experience feels closer to casually peeking into different flavors of romance within short, approachable play cycles. On the other hand, the one-year calendar progresses lightly, with some events jumping forward by a month or more, which may feel lacking for players seeking a densely depicted school life or pronounced seasonal changes. Sub-heroine routes are brief (the official site states that the proportion of main-heroine content was intentionally increased), so it is better to view them as “sweet bonus episodes for each attribute.” Visually, the soft and cute aesthetic characteristic of HOOK stands out, enhancing the overall relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. For players who enjoy works built on gentle, heartwarming daily moments—neither too heavy nor too light—this is a highly compatible choice. Ext."full content".
Check out our Steam curator (link) , YouTube channel (link), and X(Twitter) (link)!
[/strike]
Home Sweet Homecoming (or E School Life, the original Japanese name), developed by HOOKSOFT who also made I x She Tell, Houkago Cinderella, and Yubisaki Connection, has some things that stick out about it, but ultimately it’s just another light-hearted slice-of-life romance moege with little to no drama. That does make me hit-or-miss on whether I ultimately recommend this title, especially when I think there are better moege out there, but overall I’d say it’s kinda good—with caveats.
Quantity Kinda Over Quality Options
The main thing that sticks out at first is the number of options Homecoming has compared to most moege. There are 7 love interests—a bit more than the usual 4–5—and thankfully just about all of them are generally pleasant to be around and not too trope-y. There’s also a decent amount of choices in the common route. Not a ton, but more than the usual “modern” moege. Since the title doesn’t have a club gimmick and the heroines mostly don’t hang out with each other, they feel extremely separated. This means you have to deliberately choose to spend time with one, and most of their pre-route screentime comes from the straightforward after-school “who do you hang out with” decisions. There’s also a choice right before bed: how early or late you want to go to sleep. This mainly affects how early/late you wake up the next morning and which heroine you run into. Since it’s hard to predict who you’ll meet and there are only 6 common-route days, you get roughly 15 different morning conversations. They’re short, but they add nice unpredictability if you’re reading blind. Speaking of reading blind, there’s another optional system called “Campus Buzz”: after school you can click on faceless NPC groups and sometimes overhear gossip about a heroine. This alters a handful of lines in the next scene with that heroine. It’s completely optional and never required to enter any route. Ultimately, while there are more heroines and slightly more meaningful choices than average, it’s still very easy to get onto routes for a moege. You just gain noticeably more common-route variety—at the cost of almost zero heroine interaction with each other outside their own paths.
Likable But Inconsistent Heroines and Routes
Every heroine is relatively pleasant, but that doesn’t translate into consistent quality across routes or even likability. In fact. the VN is shockingly uneven in route length, romance development, and character depth. My personal favorite heroine is Emi Hanzono, the childhood friend and clearly advertised implied “true” heroine. Her route is one I genuinely quite liked. Their banter is goofy with mutual teasing, especially refreshing for childhood friends who were apart for a decade before reuniting. They act like actual friends instead of the usual one-sided simping. I also enjoyed the light conflict around Emi’s lingering self-doubt that formed when Ryoutarou moved away as kids. Misato Suzuyama is the assertive genki girl. She can be selfish, but she’s the most consistently layered heroine while still staying likable, wholesome, and fun. I was worried she would be too much but I enjoyed how surprisingly dynamic she was. Her route feels like a proper arc with callbacks and real growth; her final route event is easily the strongest in the VN to me. Mia Tougane is the one main heroine I just didn’t get at all. Beyond her first-day impression of really wanting to make the MC feel comfortable, her personality is the most forgettable in the cast and her route just feels kinda aimless. Her traits keep shifting—overly accommodating → book nerd → pushover → suddenly assertive in romance—with no clear core. Rikako Jinnai is the definition of “perfectly okay.” Shy track girl in a revealing uniform—that’s about all I got from the route. There are some sweet moments of Ryoutarou helping her open up, but her route stays surface-level and predictable despite being a full length main one. Yuka Karasuma has the most disappointing route—not because it’s bad, but because it has by far the best premise, yet is stuck as a side route. An oujo-sama/rich girl heroine who hates being coddled, complete with an overprotective dad and a bodyguard who initially speaks for her, is fresh and fun. The bodyguard Mutou is even an unexpected bro. The writing and plot is very solid and wholesome, but the short length means the conflicts resolve too quickly. Rin Yoshimura, another side heroine, is perfectly pleasant and had serious potential to be one of my favorites if her route weren’t so short. There are great ideas—like her backstory for why she hides behind her hair, the unique choice of how much hair she pulls back when you go out, and her personality where you'd expect her to just be shy and mysterious but she's actually just mild-mannered and surprisingly assertive at times. The route even experiments with the couple taking things unusually slow at first for an eroge (almost half a year), but the VN’s typical multi-month time skips rob it of impact. Erina Sayama is the teacher route… and that’s the entire gimmick. Short, reliant on the teacher constantly low-key hitting on her student, justified only because he thinks she’s hot. It clashes hard with the game’s otherwise grounded wholesome tone and just feels wrong.
Other Pros and Cons
Ryoutarou, the protagonist, is… fine. He has occasional perverted thoughts but never descends into sexual-harassment. Most of the heroines are actually more sexually assertive than he is. His supposed flaws (transfer student, bad with girls) feel like informed attributes that barely matter. He can feel a little inconsistent across routes—overprotective with Emi, competitive with Misato, extra outgoing with Rikako, etc. Tooru deserves a small shout-out as one of the better bro characters in the moege genre, which admittedly isn't a high bar. He’s competent at everything (cooking, cleaning, reading the room, extracurriculars) and stays single because he’s too busy, not because he’s a loser. It’s a nice twist that keeps him likable and funny without making him a joke. Most other side characters exist only to resolve minor drama and lack sprites (though they do have VA). The game brags about variety, yet almost every date is at the same outlet mall, petting zoo, or family restaurant. In a big city setting, that’s disappointing. I also wasn’t super into how every heroine route had at least a month time skip, usually multiple between chapters but almost never did much with said time skips to actually develop the romantic relationships in an interesting way. Choosing when to go to sleep every night is a fun enough minor ginmick, and picking who to hang out with after school at least makes getting on routes easy, as expected of modern moege. The “Campus Buzz” eavesdropping choice system, however, is easily the worst gimmick of this VN. The gimmick was tedious, had no real hints on which NPCs to click, and was completely optional. I beat every route without touching it, except for one.
Conclusion
As it stands, Home Sweet Homecoming/E School Life is a perfectly fine, decent-ish moege. It has nice wholesome down to earth writing, decent enough comedy, and a small handful of memorable emotional moments. However I feel like the more routes you read, you slowly start to see how the repetition, recycled date spots, and wildly uneven treatment of heroines drag things down. And the Campus Buzz gimmick is dumb and optional aka pointless. My personal advice is to just use the common route to find the few girls at most you like best and just read those routes. That’s the best way to get maximum enjoyment with minimal disappointment from this VN. Emi > Misato > Rin > Yuka > Rikako > Erina > Mia
