great game
I'm way late to the party with this series of games. This one is like the Combat Mission of "linear warfare" wargaming. I mean, there's no WEGO option or anything (though you can pause and survey, but not pause and issue order), but rather due to the attention to detail, the scope, and the way the game plays. The pace of combat is slow, but there's a speedup option. You sacrifice visual fidelity for gameplay and realism here. Elevation matters, morale matters, officers/troops have varying levels of skill, and lots of other gameplay elements. Don't expect Total War arcade combat. Even with tutorial missions included, you should probably read the manual anyway. There are tons of options to tailor your experience, from "god mode" where you see and control everything immediately, to using couriers to issue delayed orders to other units, to only controlling a single brigade in a larger army, or being tied directly to your officer and only seeing what he sees (HITS system). There's multiplayer, but I'm more of a comp-stomp player, and I find the AI to be competent enough to pose a challenge. The only problems I have are minor: fiddly UI and controls (but tolerable), you cannot zoom the map, and occasionally a regiment will bunch up into a tiny group the size off a single soldier, and expand to normal size when moving again--I have no idea why and it's annoying. Also, the advanced courier system is a brilliant idea, but I've had mixed results in actually making it work correctly. It seems like the devs are still actively improving the game, so at least it's not a lazy remaster-and-run scheme for an easy buck. Easily one of the best wargames for this era I've played, even with some of its issues. Highly recommended.

got to say there isnt a civil war game out there of this size its fun battles last 20 to 30 mins or longer the multiplayer is fun and cool along with how everything is paced it makes you feel like a real commander and ITS NOT WORTH THE 45$ as it has issues like u cant tab out and others BUT IF U CAN CATCH IT ON sale it is worth it. i hope they keep working on it and fix some of the issues as there isnt many games out there like it that also offer that realistic line battle feel while being able play with friends <EDIT>
I've been playing SOWG for several years and it's really a brilliant system once you get a handle on it. But, to be fair, the Remastered version seems to currently be in a "beta", unfinished state. The newer in-game graphics are definitely an improvement but the UI needs a bit of work. The gameplay also seems a bit buggy compared to the older version. I had high hopes for this new release but it's just not there yet.
This is an excellent Civil War wargame. It plays slowly enough to take in the strategic context and the command and control system with the Grog Mod is especially good. Think of Sid Meiers Gettysburg with better graphics and controls. Highly recommended.
The game is fun
Excellent game but with a crude and clunky interface. Ordering and organising troops can be needlessly laborious and frustrating, but once you find a workaround it's a great strategy game whereby you have time to think, manoeuvre and strategise.
juegazo!
Good game , good details on units . Takes some time getting used to how the game works. You have to turn off AI units doing their own thing. Or they wonder off where you don't wont them. BUT still very good game. ( First time playing this series from dev so not used to how the game operates) I have played a lot of UCW. That is a lot more basic compared to this.
Way too much for a old game
