This review was written in English and Russian in purpose to save your money and time. They claim Scéal is an adventure game but it’s rather a visual novel which looks like a movable book with pop-up pictures. Story In Steam Joint Custody, the only game’s developer, concisely describes Scéal as being «steeped in supernatural Irish folklore». Scéal means “Story” in Irish language ( Gaelige or Gaelic) so Joint Custody tells you a story about a girl’s spirit who seeks to find her memories with the help of the raven named Branna. The game puts you in the shoes — or rather the soul — of a little girl who has no memories of her previous life. It’s a simple but interesting story but it’s so short that you can complete it less than two hours. The Irish folklore is represented in the game through some forms of the girl ghost (angel, banshee) and a mythical raven named Branna. Brân the Blessed (Gaelic: Bendigeidfran or Brân Fendigaidd, literally "Blessed Crow") is a giant and king of Britain in Celtic mythology. He appears in several of the Welsh Triads, but his most significant role is in the Second Branch of the Mabinogi (Branwen ferch Llŷr). The name "Brân" in Gaelic is usually translated as crow or raven. Gameplay In Scéal, there’s simple and symbolic mechanic: wherever a heart goes, the soul must follow. This becomes your method of movement in the game. Players pull an ethereal green heart around the map, and the floating soul chases it to the destination. You make the girl’s spirit float around a small island consists of two villages and paint some objects (buildings, stones, trees). As you can see the game is focused on its story rather than gameplay. This would be completely fine if the story really pulled you in but it doesn't manage to do this. Graphics I liked the graphics of this game. Designed to resemble a storybook, Scéal’s pages are filled with pretty watercolor artwork. Upon opening the town map, ink spreads outward to complete the entire picture Sound/Music The soundtrack of this game is what shines here because it tells the story more through its music. I enjoyed the Irish folk music here as it was high quality and definitely fit the game's tone. There’s an outstanding soundtrack featuring Irish folk singers such as Aislinn Duffy and Florence Glen. If you have an interest in Irish folk music (like me), you’ll like the Scéal’s soundtrack for sure. Conclusion I ought to say Scéal is more of a narrative than a game and besides very short one. I do not recommend Scéal to anyone except those who are keen of Irish folk music.
Scéal describes itself as a “living storybook.” It tells the story of a young girl’s spirit, wandering the world without any memories. Aided by a magical raven, the player guides the ghost to uncover her forgotten past. The story begins with the girl waking up on a lonely pier. Exploring the village and the surrounding area reveals that the book isn’t quite finished. A number of buildings must be “colored in” before the story may proceed. While this may sound like an opportunity for the player to put their own creative stamp on the game, the mechanic is, in fact, much less exciting. All that’s required is dragging the mouse over the screen to reveal the finished version of each illustration. After the book is completed, it comes alive with villagers emerging from their homes to wander the streets. By finding key people from the girl’s past and completing their individual quests, the player uncovers the truth surrounding her death. The game is made up of many 2D watercolor illustrations layered against one another in a 3D world space, much like a pop-up book. Houses, trees and ships spring up and down as the camera shifts, giving the impression that the games “pages” are being turned. Not only is the environment kinetically alive, the quality and color of the illustrations are also in flux. As the player explores, the world comes to life in their wake, as though an invisible artist were putting the finishing touches on the watercolors. Depending on the time of day or the emotional tone of the story, the hue of the illustrations also change. The difference between the same landscape on an “uplifting” night verses a “melancholic” dawn is striking. More memorable than its unique visual elements is Scéal‘s soundtrack. Despite its small scale, the game boasts an original soundtrack composed by traditional Irish folk musicians Lorcan Mac Mathuna, Aislinn Duffy and Florence Glen. With 14 tracks, the musical landscape is rich, beautiful and at times haunting. In the final chapter, when the player must decide the ultimate fate of the girl, each choice has its own song. While a positive outcome is rewarded with a lively jig, a negative one results in a gut wrenching dirge. Combined with the story book illustrations, the music feels like a lullaby meant to accompany a bedtime story. Here we come to the real heart of the problem: is Scéal better off as a video game compared to a traditional paper and ink book? Its certainly more memorable. It wouldn’t have taken more than 5 minutes to read through the text and glance at the key images. No, Scéal is much more special for being “living.” While its core mechanics are nothing to write home about, the dynamic nature of the environment and music makes it a real treat. It’s difficult to say exactly who the target audience might be. Scéal seems fitting for young children. After all, it is a “story book.” The controls are also perfect for a tablet port. I’m left wondering whether the ultimate goal was to have a tablet based game that parents could share with their children like an interactive story book, with the child doing the coloring while the adult helps with navigation and reading. TL;DR: Is Scéal worth $5? Yes, without a doubt. The music alone is worth the price tag. I probably wont revisit the game now that I have played it through 3 times, once for each ending. Still, it’s a memorable experience and one which I hope will be emulated by future games.
yop, nice paintings. fast but real good game. I hope that it will continue
👑 Powered by HoI 4 Deu Curators group in German / English 👑⠀⠀⠀

Follow Main group
 Follow Second group
 Follow third group
and discover more reviews from me. Very refreshing game, full of colour, great music, story is simple but nice, the negative is too short for such good game
This is a lovely little game, which I would describe as more of an interactive storybook. The mechanics are quite simple: you guide a little spirit on her quest to find out who she is and what became of her. The real pleasures here are in the evocative visuals and especially in the beautiful Celtic music. It may be a short game, but I legitimately got a little choked up at some of the endings.
Nice game with beautiful handpainted graphics.
beautiful music and immersive visuals!
I love this game, it's nice and short but a bug has stopped me from completing the game. I'm on chapter three and decided to help the characters father but all the people in the village have merged into a mass and I can not move or posess anybody. I hope this gets fixed soon also when I go to quit the game it always crashes.
